Well, starting the end of next week, I hope to be in the midst of four builds.  I thought perhaps these builds might placate the BR Gods.  No chance!  They still haven't been appeased and are now demanding that I build them a 629 Commando.
While I don't want to anger the BR Gods, I'm not sure I want to commit to another HTF parts search.  Nor do I really want to finance such a build.  While I haven't started the search/buying process yet, from what I've seen, this build may be a difficult to find parts project.
Anyone care to chime in?

Care to chime in? Can't help you with a 629, but I'm in the middle of an M16A2 build, RO727 build, and M16A1 arsenal rebuild build at the moment. It never ends. I just snagged a Colt barrel for the 727 and a SAK barrel for the M16A1, my wallet is telling me to stop.

I feel your pain

GAU 5 A/A close enough to a 629, wasn't too bad of a build: got the 604 upper, BCG and colt aluminum stock from live4nov, 2-pos. receiver extension from Nodak, ADCO chopped 1/9 twist pencil barrel to 12.75 inch with braceman-made grenade ring / moderator and engraving with A1 re profile. 1st retro carbine build I ever assembled, not 100% on point for a clone but shoots like a dream. Good Luck, post pics when you're done

OK, sooooooo let's assume I am caving in to the wicked Gods of the RBRs.  Where does one find the things that make a 629 what it is, ie:

6 hole skinny Hand Guards

2 pos buffer tube- NDS

Acetate coated stock

11.5" barrel group

The above can all be reproductions as long as they are quality pieces.

I will be, IF, I do this, pinning a 4.5 Moderator foregoing another SBR expense.

6 holes are all over the EE and GB.
Actual Colt Acetate coated stocks are on GB and the EE all the time, but cost a pretty penny.  Repros are things you have to make, either from another aluminum stock (bushmaster or Essential Arms), which can be found in the same places.  OR I have seen some people sand/paint plastic stock bodies in gloss black, and they look the part.  You can find good repros of the colt N/1 stock body from M&A for a reasonable price.
11.5" barrels can be found in the same places, especially if you're looking for colt.  But repros are available from other sources (check the spreadsheet).   You can also get a longer carbine barrel, and have it chopped down.

The barrel will need to be about 12.7" before pinning a 4.5" moderator to get over the 16" limit for non-NFA. As said elsewhere, you'll have to cut down a longer barrel or wait until Brownells releases their 12.7" retro barrel.

I'll use Brace for all my work.  Nothing at all against JT but Brace is 15 minutes away.

Original parts are fine, but price on this one is paramount, hence the OK on the repro.

I'm afraid to contact Lionel.  Every time I do, it's always several hundred dollars worth of goodies.

Argh!  Maybe I'll just build this one in my head.  When I find a part, I'll pretend to buy it then check it off my list.  Once everything is checked off, I'll build it....in my head.

CH codes were used 1974-82, XM177E2 production only ran until 1970 IIRC. You will want (need ) a non-forge code, round forge upper.

Learn something new everyday.

I assume those would have used whatever uppers were being produced at the time then. Do you know when 629/630 production finally ceased?

Always late to the party as usual. Mark, the 629 is one sexy carbine! A head turner where ever you go. In this photo from last year I've since changed the M14 sling to a USGI utility style. Gives it more character.

Found my barrel, FSB, Type 2 stock, lower & upper receiver today.  Will get my LPK tomorrow.  Waiting on NDS for a 2 pos buffer tube.

I think with that, I'll have everything I need.  Then I get to bug Braceman yet again for more profiling and engraving.

***Also looking for a 629 4.5" Moderator for my build.  Seems they've all disappeared?  I thought Brick was making them and selling on GB?  Can't find any, just 5.5".  Maybe one from JT.

Did some more buying today.  Called Slim at Indiana Surplus for my LPK and a few other bits.  Having a hard time finding a grey tapered Delta ring, and a Ejection port door hinge.  Everything is in black, and we all know that is the WRONG color.

Everything should arrive by the end of this week.  JT tells me he'll have some more Moderators in a few weeks.

The anatomy of a 629.  Just need a grey receiver plate, Grey tapered Delta ring, Moderator w/ grenade ring, and a 2 pos receiver extension.
As usual, the Great Braceman will be cutting down and pinning the barrel, and re working my upper and lower including the engraving.
This will be my last build.
See how I did that?   I'm deliberately defiant in the face of the RBR Gods!  That'll show 'em!

Yes 7 or 9 I can't recall at present.

BTW- The collapsible stock is from Essential Arms and is beautiful.  It is powder coated instead of being dipped.  I have a buddy that has two or three originals and will be comparing them in a day or two.  I'll take side by side pics and post here.  I thought $110 wasn't a bad price, ( I opted out of the other 3 parts, only wanted the stock). I'll buy a NDS 2 pos tube as soon as they are available.   I hear Tonys Customs are good too, but not powder coated and didnt want that hassle.  EA was only $10 more and it was already done for me.

Here's a real acetate stock (left) next to my Essential Arms.  There were only two things that really set them apart.

One was the stock checkering was filled in a little at the top of the Acetate one, and two, there was a seam running the length of the release lever on the EA stock.  They are virtually identical.  Even my usually skeptical buddy was impressed.  He had the real stock.

I would highly recommend one of these stocks.  It ran me $110 + shipping for the STOCK ONLY.

When it came time to give it back, we had to look a little bit to figure out who's was who's.  That tells me its a great copy!

I was up to Bracemans this evening picking up some parts for my 601 and I dropped off the parts for my XM177E2 build.  After talking awhile about an E1, I'm considering one of those instead.  I like the compactness of the E1 better, but was building the E2 to save another $200 for another SBR.

So my question is, which do I build?

If SBR is the question, SBR is the answer (if you already have one).

For me, I'm not in the NFA game yet so I would personally choose a 16 OAL build than a stamp. But if you already have one, or a trust, then why not?
Link Posted: 5/11/2016 10:59:55 PM EDT
[#49]
If I were to do an SBR, I would choose a late full fence XM177E1, 10" barrel with a three prong or birdcage.

I hate the thought of paying $200.00 to uncle for the privilege of having a slightly shorter barrel. So I have been working on a non NFA XM177E2. All the parts have been gathered for some time, just never seem to have the extra dinero to send the barrel to John Thomas for the shortening work and pin job for the moderator. Brick's moderator is not pictured.

Im still on the fence on this one.  I may mark the lower as an "E1" and make the upper an "E2" as mentioned on page one.  Otherwise I think the full "E2" is the way to go.  Not sure I want to do a 5th stamp.
