Well, I just have to do it. I am building a fantasy prototype build with a 1/7 twist barrel. Already Talking to Harlan at NDS to get a set of NDS15 proto lower, Trigger charging handle upper, and proto handguards. I'll use the barrel, LPK, BCG stock, dust cover, A1 rear sight, and pistol grip from my 603. That is stage one. The stage two, (later in the year) will be to get a proto dust cover and sight wheel, a proto FSB, and have John Thomas rework the barrel and repark. I'll liquidate my Colt 603 upper (stripped except for forward assist), charging handle, and my good set of triangular handguards (no broken teeth. I guess I need to get some Rustoleum "Kona Brown" to paint the furniture. NOT going to do a fancy basket weave finish on it.
Sounds like a good idea, been tossin that idea around myself. Make sure to post some pics as it progresses
Cant wait to see the progress. I,ve got a plan for one also, that hasn't been done yet; unfortunately I,m in the middle of a "Trenchgun" project. Pictures to come shortly.
Mine is a number 4or as close as possible cosmetically with authentic BCG.
Decide to sell the 603 upper in the EE intact with rear sight, tear drop FA and port door, instead of stripped. I'll just pick up a different rear with a Braceman wheel. I swear that "Prototype Black Rifle Disease" is the worst strain of RBRD!!
OK, the project has officially begun. It will be four part, though, instead of two.
Stage One (now): NDS15U trigger charging handle upper and round prototype handguards in the process of being ordered from Harlan. Redo furniture Kona Brown. Stage Two (in a couple weeks): get the prototype lower set and pivot pin. Stage Three (this coming spring): get proto FSB and have John Thomas rework and rep-park my 1/7 pencil barrel, and mount proto FSB. I'll even have him mount the rear sling swivel to the pistol grip. Stage Four (to be determined): replace my Nickel Boron BCG with an original chrome 601 BCG Each stage will Be accompanied by chronological pictures. I have a feeling this will not be a quick process! |
I had someone send me a transfer iron on and did a 9 volt battery vinegar etching. It passes the 10 feet test, lol.
UPDATE:
Ordered today: NDS15U blem upper NDS31 pivot pin NDS43 Round proto handguards and cap |
I figure I'll never have an AR10, so the early style AR15 with "trigger" is as close as I'll get! LOL. Until I get my proto lower, it will be a "Faranken Proto" with a prototype upper, on an A2 lower with brown furniture. It must be a USAF weapon.
I really like the trigger charge upper. My proto is probably my favorite to shoot at the moment.
Hey Bernie, are you using any of your parts off your other retro build? Last I remember was talking you into selling off the expensive parts when you got laid off and use some if the funds to build a cheaper Air force slickside with your NDS 601 lower. I'm not up to speed on everyone's projects these days.
Hip, I sold off all the expensive parts, and eventually built a cheapo $450 mid-length carbine with a PSA 1/7 upper I got for $179 including shipping. When thing started moving (I am selling real estate now), I kept the Middy (it shoots sub-MOA with MK262 MOD1!), and started my BTDT BFPU 603 build with a JT reworked 1/7 twist pencil barrel I got from Lionel (it shoots MOA, also).
I sold the 603 upper, charging handle, 3 prong, and nice set of triangulars to order the NDS15U trigger upper and round proto handguards. I am using the 1/7 pencil barrel from the 603. Eventually i'll get the proto FSB and have JT rework the barrel. I have an Escrow closing, and am ordering the proto lower from that. |
Yippee! My credit card was hit today for my proto upper, pivot pin, handguards, and a blem waffle mag body Harlan was able to dig up! Next month proto proto lower, then the following month proto FSB and sight wheel, FSB, then the month after that, the upper group goes to JT for rework and instal. By summer, I'll be done.

Well, parts are arriving. Got the trigger charging handle upper, waffle mag blem they dug up for me, proto handguards and round end cap from Harlan. I've got the LPK, stock tube and red wine buffer from my 603 BTDT build I canabalized (NO, I am not going to spend stupid amounts on a Edgewater for this build). Also have A1 rear sight and port door from Boywonder777, and am getting a 601 chrome carrier from him is on the way. I'll use the bolt and cam pin from my Nickel Boron BCG with it. It was super easy to take the FSB off the John Thomas reworked 1/7 pencil barrel, and put the round handguard retainer on it. Eventually I'll get JT to rework the barrel with a proto FSB I am getting from Braceman. (After he is all recuperated!) Started working on the beat up Type D stock that I got from Indiana with bondo before I paint with Kona Brown Rustoleum. I scrubbed it and degreased all the nooks and crannies in all the dings and gashes in it with alcohol and a tooth brush. I used the bondo with the red hardener. Works REALLY easy, but does set up quick! I also need to have a dry, sunny day to paint the stock, handguards, and pistol grip. It's a shame the stock was soooo beat up with gashes and deep scratches. It is VERY mottled. View Quote |

I posted this in another thread, but belongs here, too.
Speaking of Harlan and Mike.... Just talked to Harlan this morning and ORDERED MY PROTOTYPE RECEIVER!!!!!!!!!!! I got the last one that is finished and ready to go, though I understand they have others that are in the works! I could wet myself like a happy puppy! I have wanted a proto with a trigger charging handle since I first saw one in a Popular Mechanics article or something like that in the very early 1960s.... My dad (an Iwo Jima WW2 vet) showed me the article. He was fascinated by the idea. He carried an M1 carbine on Iwo, and loved it. He thought the caliber was a great idea, but was worried about it being aluminum and fiberglass with the steel. |
I have my "modern" 16" Carbine with a 1/7 twist, mid-length gas system barrel, Magpul MOE stock and handguards, Monster Man Grip (California featureless" with BUIS and a Busnell 1X TR-32 red dot. That is my "serious" AR platform. This is my fantasy-prototype platform that I have wanted since I was 9 or 10! The reason I haven't done it before this was the cost ($520 for upper and lower, and another $130 just for the 601 chrome slick side carrier!). I built my entire Mid-length for that, including lower an CA DROS fees, for less than just the upper and lower!
The thing is, this will be an unusual piece, not a run of the mill AR! It will get LOTS of OOOOOhs and AAAAHs at the range! |
Dang, now I find myself thinking "Hmmm, maybe next summer I'll find an Edgewater buffer for it" ARGHHHHHHH! This disease is terrible. I know if I found one for $200ish, I'd find a way....
Haha! Yep, surprises me, too! The handguards and pistol grip came out flawless. The stock, well, if I was anal, would be redone. Oh well, it will get banged up eventually!
Argh! It is going to be a long two weeks until I can finish the build. I had my upper and waffle mag out today fondling them.
Since I am DROSing (California Dealer Record of Sale) the proto lower and the CZ83 at the same time to save double fees, it will be the 25th before I can pick them up. The dealer will have the CZ83 tomorrow, but in California's ultimate wisdom, you can not buy more than one pistol in a 30 day period. I bought my Bersa FireStorm .380 on the 15th of January, I can't start another DROS for a pistol until February 15th!
BTW, can you tell I am a born again .380 lover! Using Buffalo Bore +P 90 JHPs, My 19 oz. Bersa FireStorm gives my 9 shots of 288 ft. lbs. ME. The CZ83 will give me 14 rounds (I have pre-2000 posed 13 rounders) of a slightly higher 300 ft. lbs. ME. My buddies bulkier Glock 26 only gives 300 ft lbs with 9mm! I love the FireStorm in an ankle holster, a role once filled by a 5 shot .38 that I sold to buy the CZ83. Both the Bersa and the CZ83 will be a heck of a lot easier for EDCC (Every Day Concealed Carry) than my Glock 19 or the 38 and Kahr CW45 I sold. |
Just started 10 day California jail todat....the 26th is a LONG way away! LOL
Yippee! I pick up my proto lower (and CZ83) today. Picks to follow..
Looking good! However it makes me regret
not pursuing my AR10B project. |
Picked up the lower HOOORAYYYY! Since the proto lower (true to original) had no channel in the wall of the magazine well for the bump on the magazine bodies under the catch hole, I already flattened the bumps on the sides of 3 20 round magazine (all blocked to 10 rounds), one NDS waffle, and two Colt 20s. Now all I need to do is cut down the OAL on the mag catch and radius the end. Then it will be retro heaven!

I need to do this to a few mags, but haven't figure out how to do it with the waffle. |
I used a short piece of square steel stock (5/16". IIRC), under the bump, and wedged a large, thick flat file under it to hold it tight against the inside. Then I used a 1/2" flat head brass drift, using a brass hammer. The steel waffle, I just used a small tack hammer, and no brass drift.
UPDATE: all together EXCEPT magazine catch assembly. That will have to wait until tomorrow, then pictures.
I LOVE IT! While sort of a pain in the @ss, the trigger charging handle is beyond cool, and is an absolute retro woody to operate! For now, I am running it with an unmodified 1/7 pencil barrel, with standard FSB and a 601 flash hider. When I can get the bucks together, I'll get the proto FSB and send it to John Thomas to mount the FSB and for the thin barrel rework. |
Well, its all done!!! (except for the engraving and proto FSB). Boy that magazine catch was hard steel! Got it shortened, and radius by hand. Perfect fit. It was a challenge making the catch not go too far in, since there is no boss around it on the other side. It was actually easier to do with the California Bullet Button. The screw in gizmo bottomed out on the thread too soon, but I put a small collar from a pen refill behind it, and it is perfect.
Pictures today. Too bad I sold my Beau Gam Duck Hunter camo when I was unemployed... |

I sure hope we hear from AirForceMajor; he constructed the absolute Pièce De Résistance XAR-1501 SCHV test rifle reproduction a few years ago.
