Well, things are coming along with these two builds. I just got a few more needed Colt parts in from jhud. My C MP B barrel I got from SGL_Shooter should be here Monday. My GM no-forge code upper (in the white) and second set of triangular handguards will be here Monday as well. I have already contacted Victor at US Anodizing about refinishing the upper in XM Grey to match the NDS-XM16E1 lower on order. Victor said it will be about a two week turn around. I am still waiting to see how the McKay Enterprises A1 lowers turn out before I commit to buying one. Everything is going well overall. Hopefully, in the next few months, I can have these finished up.

I have one project that will be a companion rifle to my XM16E1. It will be either a 603 or 604 of 1969 vintage, depending on the upper I find. Looking forward to seeing your pics..

Just got a call from Harlan. My XM lower is getting ready to be shipped out. That is really quick. I placed the order on April 21st. I should see it in a few days. At least I will be able to get the XM16E1 lower assembly built. I went ahead and put a XM Grey NDS-16A1lower on order while I was talking to Harlan.

So this project won't be sporting a McKay Enterprises A1 lower now? Was wondering if they could get it together due to previous posts on anodizing problem's.

The M16A1 will have either the Nodak Spud or McKay lower. It may be some time before McKay gets the color right and I want to have a backup plan. It was better to get the NDS lower ordered now than to wait further along. Who knows, I may still end up buying a McKay lower too. |

Actually just check and I place my order on 4/18....Hope to hear something soon.... |

My XM16E1 lower shipped out today. What's NDS's serial range these days for XM lowers? My highest serial numbered XM Gray one is in the mid 100's. I am not sure what they are up to now, but the one I got early 2014 was in the 1200 range. That one is on my XM607. BTW, the barrel has been found. It finally made it to my branch P.O. at 5:30 this morning. Hopefully, I will have it this afternoon. |

We are currently in the 1400's on the NDS-XM16E1 lowers.
The A1's are just over 3000 601's are just under 1000 |

If you noticed, I touched up the barrel a little bit to make it blend with the FH. Remember how the muzzle area was darker? I worked on it a little more a few minutes ago and the finish looks a lot more even now than it does in the pics. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Nice If you noticed, I touched up the barrel a little bit to make it blend with the FH. Remember how the muzzle area was darker? I worked on it a little more a few minutes ago and the finish looks a lot more even now than it does in the pics. I was wondering if you had just wiped it down with some CLP or something. I kinda enjoyed how the pale grey looked on my worn upper, but the darker look is a better match for that upper. Should be a great shooter. |

I did notice that the rifling still looks pretty good in that barrel. Bore is nice and shiny. Looks good. |

Tonight, I went over and picked up the Nodak Spud NDS XM16E1 lower. As of about an hour ago, I now have a complete lower assembly for the XM16E1 build. I will put a pic up tomorrow. I have the upper boxed and ready to send to US Anodizing, but I am having to wait until I have the funds to send it. I hope to send it off next week.

Everything looks awesome! Always impressed with your builds.
Hopefully hear from Nodak soon, placed my order April 27 |

Harlan said they were still working on orders for those from back in December 2014. I am hoping that McKay Enterprises gets their A1 lowers done soon. They already have several that are backordered. |

Very nice!
Picked up my XM16E1 lower yesterday. Sure looks pretty. Will be my first build totally from parts, and my first retro. |
|
That C H upper looks great on your new XM16E1 lower. But I know your waiting for your real 604 upper from US Anodizing.

This morning, I took the M16A1/XM16E1 clone out to the range for a trial run. All I have to say is . It functions flawlessly. I got it zeroed at 100 yards without much adjustment. Now, to get the XM16E1 upper assembly and the M16A1 lower assembly done.

I made some more progress today. I finally got the XM upper sent off to US Anodizing. Hopefully, I will have it back early July and I can then get the XM16E1 finished. Next, to wait on the XM Grey NDS-16A1 lower.

I got an e-mail from Victor at US Anodizing this morning. They are getting started on my XM upper. Nothing like hearing about some progress.

JRS, did you send to him to be stripped and re coated? Any idea what the final cost is going to be? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I got an e-mail from Victor at US Anodizing this morning. They are getting started on my XM upper. Nothing like hearing about some progress. The exterior of the upper had already been stripped when I bought it. There was still some hardcoat finish on the inside that they are removing. The cost of hardcoat anodizing an upper (in the white) is $145. The cost to remove any remaining finish is $25. I added another $10 to cover the cost of return shipping (w/ insurance). When done, it will have the same finish that Nodak Spud has done to their receivers. This way, it will be a perfect match for the Nodak XM lower. |

I see OK, thanks I've given consideration to doing a couple of mine as well. Just was a lil confused on the online pricing .

I finally have an A1 lower on the way from McKay Enterprises. I am planning on using it for the M16A1 build. If all looks good and assembles well, I will cancel the one I have on order from Harlan. McKay had these new A1 lowers anodized at US Anodizing in the same XM Gray as Nodak Spud, so the color should be spot on with the Colt upper. The lower arrives at my FFL on Wednesday, so I should have the M16A1 clone done that evening or Thursday.

I received the McKay Enterprise lower this evening. I got everything assembled and I now have the M16A1 clone done. I will post some pictures and a review of the McKay Enterprise A1 lower tomorrow.

This morning, I took the M16A1 clone to the range. Everything went great. I also got an e-mail from Victor at US Anodizing and he said that my XM upper shipped earlier in the week. I expect it my show up on Monday. That would mean that I would have the XM16E1 done by Tuesday.

beautiful XM16E1. You distressed it perfectly. Everything blends nicely.

JRS,
I am planning a used look on one of my builds, what process did YOU use, its as stated very authentic looking and blotchy like I think they should look. not just shiny raised parts. Thanks |

Thanks View Quote I used some fine grit sandpaper to get the finish down to where I wanted it and then I took some gun oil (rubbed it in) and some super fine steel wool to give it a sheen. I wiped off the oil and that was it. It just takes a little patience. It takes me about 5 to 7 minutes to do a receiver to the point where I like it. |

I finally got the XM16E1 clone out to the range this morning after Sunday School. Other than a couple clicks on the windage, it works great. I love it when a plan comes together.
