I realize this isn't really all that technical but I thought it would be the best place for it given the content.
I appreciate any help. |

Death Valley - The Summer Offensive I Corps, August 1969 - by Keith Nolan.
Well written and researched (and has a buddy of mine mentioned a few times ) |
|
There is an excellent pictorial log called "10,000 Days of War" or something like that. It is a chronological pictorial history of the war from 1949 to 1975. I saw it once on a book sellers table at a gunshow, but it was high dollar As far as novels go, "The 13th Valley", "Chickenhawk" , "The Green Beret", and "We were Soldiers" come to mind. I'll have to check in my den. Also "Men with Green Faces".

The type of Vietnam writing runs the gamut from poetic to war college text books.

This:
A Rumor Of War Philip Caputo Without knowing it at the time, I pretty much followed his footsteps as a 1st Lt about a year behind him in the book. Another eye opener was The Tunnels of Chu Ci, sorry, this is likely spelled wrong. Here, fixed it: The Tunnels of Cu Chi, Tom Mangold & John Penycate, Berkley Books, New York, 1986 |
|
Here is another:
Honorable Men: My Life in the CIA [William Colby, Peter Forbath] Not obviously 100% Viet-Nam, but as a young case officer assigned there, his observations are astute. Especially his opinion that most of the officers, being relatively recent Korean War veterans, and or possessing that combat experience, were set to conduct a pretty conventional "...bad guys in the north invade goods guys in the south...," essentially ignoring they were in the mists of an insurgency that would ultimately overcome a conventionally trained and equipped South Vietnamese Army. |

I am not sure the title but the book is a biography about Carlos Hathcock's tours in Vietnam. How he stalked a female NVA Torturer/Sniper The Apache is what the US Troopers called her, because she hacked up prisoners. Shot another NVA Sniper right through the scope and into his eye. They used that shot in Saving Private Ryan as tribute, when Barry Pepper shoots the German through his scope. The last day of this guy's enlistment, he volunteers to go behind enemy lines alone and assassinate a NVA General in his own camp. Dude belly crawled past patrols for 3 days and got within range, took aim, and shot the center mass. The enemy were so confused they were firing in the wrong direction and he simply got up and ran off and was picked up by a helo the following day. Crazy shit, they gave him X amount of days to get to the LZ and if he wasn't there the first time, they weren't coming back for him. Suicide Mission was what his CO called it, he simply said that he was the best and if anyone could do it, it was him. I also believe he fixed a scope to a 50 cal M2 and got a kill from over a 2400 meters or some shit...

Any personal account or any books for that matter on MACVSOG.
If you are looking for videos or video series, that is a different matter. I own just about everyone. So I am addicted to Vietnam and am strung out on Laos and Cambodia too. |
|
A book call "Nam "is what you seek. Its a compilation of short storys from like a hundred diffren people , its very well rounded in expeirience from front line troops to nurses .

I've got a credit for a free book from Amazon audible, figured I'd get one of these.
Unfortunately, many aren't available. I've also considered "Helmet for my pillow" by Robert Leckie |
|
There are going to be many different stories. That is why there are so many books written.
Vietnam is a small country and it was divided up into 3 different areas. I was in the central highlands, High up in the mountains, close to Cambodia. It was cold, lots of pine trees, etc. Just pick a book and read it. Ron |
