Gun makers always start with 193.....oh wait , no they don't. They friggin start with 1 so there are either some earlier ones or a shitload of prototypes.

601's started with 101.

There have been earlier ones documented still in collections such as the Knight collection, and we know that 115 is in Italy.

consider the source of the video

Yeah, I thought they meant that model 01 was the first, not #193. Don't know if I was really paying total attention to those two. But it did seem that all this "weird retro stuff" was new to them.

No, if you're talking about GD. Yes, if you're talking about the Retro forum.

In the last couple years the gun that was handled to General Lemay to shoot watermelons and or coconuts was auctioned at James D Julia auction house.

Serial #106

Actually, the 601s started at number 100.  As you might expect, it's hanging on the wall in Titusville.  Had the pleasure of handling it and inspecting the insides on a visit a few years ago. Best Day. Ever.

Neckbeards being neckbeards.... Surprised they didn't perform sexual acts with it.

It's not uncommon for a lot of the low numbers to be destroyed in testing or at least not to survive to see 55 years later.  So 193 is pretty low even if they had started at 1.  If they started at 100, then 193 is very low.

A competitor like Remington probably has to back channel the purchase too, so getting one of the first 93 guns demonstrates they had pretty awesome abilities to get their hands on shit quick.

I think it's safe to say these guys do't hang out in the retro forum LOL. I think they sad it was the first AR15 that Remington owned but I didn't have time to finish the video.

I never noticed the difference of the selector on the prototypes before.

That thing would be hell with my muscle memory.

It's the first Colt AR-15 that Remington ever owned (purchased).  They state that pretty clearly in the video.

I'm not sure who captioned the video but it was probably added out of context.

Just two guys that don't know a ton about those old parts shootin' the shit.  I thought his take on high sites was interesting.  I hadn't heard about iron sights getting washed out from the heat of sustained fire.  Was that actually part of the design thought or was it just a function of a straight stock?

Cool gun.  I like that the left handguard shield was just captured and no longer attached to the handguard.

it's a type A stock and no drainhole handguards.  guess it's green furniture painted black.  i thought that didn't happen to way later.

It doesn't look green.  Well, the grip is definitely painted black over green so I guess the handguards may be, too.  I like how someone notched the rear sight, the conclusion being L stands for low light.  HA!  Welcome to the science of archeology.

Keep in mind, Remington UMC was making the .ammunition (.222 Special later to be called .223 Remington) used in the testing of the AR15.

I couldn't get the youtube video to play at home for some reason and had to wait until after work to soak in the full effect of two guys trying to appreciate something they had no real appreciation for.

I can assure you there was no throwing around of #100 and the finger banging was far more tender and loving than in the video. You can't treat the very first Colt Armalite 601 like some $20 whore but I was honored to have a peek at her privates.

Unfortunately, no. He was very open about photos of the tanks and other vehicles and I took plenty there.  But I was requested to not photograph in either of the gun collection rooms. This was 5 years ago and I think they were still sensitive about earlier photos that had leaked to the Net via SMG Lee and others.  You know, the photos we all love and look at here almost every day, including in this thread.

As we walked through the collection and looked at many of the unique "holy grail" guns, my hand holding the camera started twitching instinctively like Dr. Strangelove, but I kept my promise and didn't sneak a single photo. But now that I have a partially finished prototype clone with lots of little details to finish, I really wish I'd begged for a few minutes and photos of SN 000001.  I still hope they will feature that rifle in one of the videos they have been producing to give us all a closer look.
