A while ago I put a picture up of my prototype build. Now all I need is a front sight post. Here's some picture of my rifle.

The upper and lower are from Nodak. I turned an HBAR barrel down to prototype dimensions, and fluted it under the handguards. I made the flash suppressor and the knurled slip ring. I fitted some A2 heat shields into the handguards. The FSB I got off of the EE some time ago. The mag button is new production, and it's not quite right, but it has horizontal lines at least. I got the bolt catch from a member here who made it, and who's name I unfortunately can't remember. He also does/did sight wheels and mag buttons.

This has some flaws, but I think I can live with them. My fluting is a bit off. The knurling on the slip ring is lighter than I would like. I used the 601 lower because I don't want to have 1 AR in my collection that has to have special magazines. I also used a regular sight wheel and that new mag button(which has horizontal lines, but they're a bit coarse and it's dark colored). I did this because they were fairly close.

But overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

Looks great!!!

JT makes reproduction horizontal lines mag buttons for a very reasonable rate.

You need a front sling swivel, a dimpled selector, a repop proto port door, and like others said a repop gray 601 mag button.

Looks fabulous otherwise....

ETA - it isn't a Retro picture without toes!

At some point, I'm going to dimple the selector it has. I guess I'm not familiar with what makes a prototype port door. Anybody have a picture?

This is now a Prototype pic thread!  Great job!  JT helped with a couple of the more complicated things on mine.

Is it necessary to modify the mags with the NDS prototype lower?

yep, it doesn't have the relief cut inside the magwell nor the reinforcement outside.  without the reinforcement, the relief would have left the wall too thin.

So the original prototypes would not have used the early waffle magazines? They used a modified version? Or is this just a "quirk" of the repro prototype lowers?

Thanks.

mace2364, did you do something to the Head of the Rear Takedown Pin ?  It looks very different.

As far as the Mag's for the NDS Prototype Lower Receiver's, you can Crush the Bump, Grind/File away the Bump, OR, Find and Use some Sterling AR-180 Mag's, as they work perfectly.

I am constantly searching for some Sterling AR-180 Mag's, for my Prototype Rifle.

The prototypes used a straight, 25 round mag.  A photo of a replica I made is below.

Log,  I really do like your Prototype AR.  It has almost the same look I'm going for with mine.

Your Checkered Slip Ring, may I ask who did it? And how much it cost to get done?  I asked JT if he would Checker a Flat Slip Ring for me, and he said he doesn't do that anymore.

Damn, my Bad Luck.

But, your Prototype AR15 Looks Great.

I want to say my65pan did it, but I don't remember for sure.  Whoever did it made a run of those, AR-10 type slips rings, and the "Saturn" looking ones (raised ring around the middle of the ring.

I have two small parts that could be used for a proto build and now I kinda want one. You guys are awful.

I actually got it that way. Don't remember where though, probably out of my local gunsmiths parts bin.

At some point I am going to happen upon a couple of damaged magazines, and I'm going to make a 25 rd mag for mine. I just can't bring myself to cut up a working straight 20. The waffle mag, while not exactly authentic, is an early magazine and I like how it looks. So that's why it's in my rifle.

Also, does anyone have a pic of an original prototype rifle with this "prototype port door"? I can't seem to find a pic of an original with one. All of the real prototype pics I'm finding on the net have a quasi regular port door.

Log, where did you find the bayonet lug part for your FSB? I'd really like to find one of those.

This isn't Vietnam, there are rules.

No feet are to be seen in photos.

Very unprofessional.

Veltro, thanks for posting that pic. I really like that fully Checkered Flat Slip Ring.

I would surely love to put that one on my Prototype Build that will be going to JT soon.  But I have one of those "Saturn" Rings, and that will work for me.

Gathering parts for mine. Slip ring is on the list. I like the Saturn ring personally. Just picked up a FSB. You guy kill me every time you post pictures. I tried to buy the last NDS upper ans a lower, only to miss out on it. I'm thrilled to hear they expect to do another run. I'm saving all the pictures for reference. Thanks!

The port door some people like to think of as a "prototype" door are Sendra products from the 80s, I believe.  People like them for this purpose because they look like they could have been a prototype, but I don't believe you'll find a similar door on any of the actual prototypes.

Of course, if I'm wrong, someone will say so shortly!

It was my65pan then.  Those are the AR-10 style rings I was referring to on the right.

JT made it for me along with the FH.  He also painted my HG's to match my 601 stock and PG.  Great work but you'll have approach him yourself as to his current availability and capacity to make such parts.

Protos weree all slightly different, some had no muzzle device, and others had 2 different styles, some had the bayolug sleeve and some didn't. I believe 004 was the one Stoner traveled around with for a year to demo, If memory serves me correct, that one had no muzzle device or bayolug sleeve.

That's actually a bipod adapter
Link Posted: 4/19/2015 7:54:25 PM EDT
[#29]
It's definitely a bipod adapter. There's a picture of it in The Black Rifle. The little nub fits into a notch in the bipod to keep it from rotating around.

Personally, I think they built all of the rifles in a certain configuration and then, because the whole lot were test weapons, just grabbed one and modified it as needed. The first 4 rifles were modified, some like #4, very heavily. #6 was left untouched. No rhyme or reason behind it seemingly.

[#30]
It also works prefectly as a bayonet lug for a hybrid M7 bayo, with an M4 attachment. There was a thread awhile back where someone found such a 601 style bayo, and it fit perfectly on that lug. But I can see where it seems to just be a bipod mount. Very clever when you think about it, you would not really need a bayo and a bipod attached at the same time.
Link Posted: 4/19/2015 9:21:57 PM EDT
[#31]
That's actually really interesting. Why not make some kind of double duty mount to please the Military? Seems plausible.
