AKA what I do to pass the time until I can get NDS 604 upper and E1 Lower.

I'll finish the butt stock and throw a some more parts on the assembly tomorrow. Then tackle the hand guards.

If I don't find an XM upper by the time I get my stamp back I'll use a spare CH 603 upper on my 609 until I do find one.

I'll have plenty of time, I still haven't ordered the lower, haven't gotten a chance between work and everything else.

Finished the stock. Now I'm adding a few parts into the assembly.

Stock still needs a latch handle...

Nice job though with what you've already done.

I actually got farther on the hand guards today than I expected.

Finished the hand guards tonight, heat shields will next, followed by the dust cover, 20rd magazine, and pistol grip.

Nice drawings.  Is there a link to more of them?

After picking up one of these:

I'm shifting gears to a GAU-5A/A, which is nice because it makes sourcing a barrel much much easier. So this is where I'm at:

What program are you using to draw these up?

Solidworks.

I've been using it for 10 years now, most of that professionally to design AR parts.

Build both. ARFCOM rules....pinned at the top of the forum. You didn't read them did you??

Looking forward to either one. If you do a Son Tay build are you still going to SBR it or go with the typical pinned 16" length barrel?

Yeah I'm having to figure out if I can buy one of those singlepoint mounts, or if I'm go to make few to get what I need.

I prefer your 610 a little, but that's damn nice uxb! I like the reliability of the longer barrels - the E1 version just looks a little cooler to me - and we all know it's about looking cool!

Are your cad files cosmetic (for fun and the sake of appearance) or are you tolerancing everything out to the point it could be manufactured from the files?

Are those Solidworks files?  Are you planning to manufacture parts based on those?  Anything you would be willing to file share?

Nice looking GAU by the way.  The sight is pretty neat as well.

That's fairly impressive work, especially if you've done that all from scratch in the time this post has been here.  You might very well be a design wizard if that's the case.

Everything is sized correctly, but I typically skip figuring out the tolerance call outs unless I'm planning on having the part made or I know it needs to be something particular and I don't want to forget it in the future.

I do everything in Solidworks, and yeah the progress in this tread has been as I finish a part and I as I've said before I've been making my living being a wizard at this sort of stuff for a number of years now.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to make some of those damn singlepoint strap mounts myself if I even hope to have one for myself, I'm sure it would be worth the extrusion die cost to do it though.

There is a member called Braceman who makes the mounts.  He said $55 and a month waiting to get to production would do it.  I think that's an incredible bargain really. john    remove this   [email protected]  is his contact info.

An extrusion would be insane.  That would be like $2K and a minimum run of material for a mount that might sell 50 parts a year if that.

I guess the original singlepoint base was plastic, and the braceman mount is aluminum.  That explains the use of electrical tape.  The mount was probably relaxing and letting the scope move around.

The extrusion would be that bad, I know a place the specializes in low volume, precision extrusions that would be reasonable but yeah it's still a hard sell.

I'll contact braceman and see about getting one.

Tonight's progress:

I just eyeballed the strap mount, I'll make a print of it so someone with a real one and a set of calipers can check my work.

I think I'm going to run the numbers to see about the possibilty of making a run of the mounts.
