Speaking of retro watches............would a 1963 Rolex be considered a legitimate Viet Nam era carried/used watch?

Looks good and will probably go for big bucks.

BUT it leaves me pretty butt hurt at the thought of sending ANY money to VN for the repatriation of what could very well be a soldier's effects.

Just sayin'

And Stoner I think the brass could and did wear whatever watch they wanted.

Pretty sure rank and file got some leeway in wristwatches.

I know (first hand knowledge) the Rolex was very popular with Army Special Forces (Green Beret) during VN war and after (cold war) due to EMP of a nuclear attack.

Stay away from any of the watches from Vietnam (including this one) unless you're specifically looking for a fake. They're probably produced in the same place as all the fake Zippos. More info is available on the Military Watch Resource if anyone is interested.
Here's one I picked up before anyone there knew they were faking the plastic cased Westclox models.

I was very into military watches for a long time but have mostly been cured, though RBRD has been harder to get rid of. I've sold off most of them, but this one will stay till the bitter end - my favorite VN era watch, a Benrus Type II. This one is dated March 1973, likely a little late to have actually gone over.

I can bet it wasn't anywhere near Vietnam.  My dad tells me he went through 4 timex watches in the year he was in country.  Damn humidity got into everything

Dude, it's currently in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon .

It's a fake...repro made for the western tourist market. All kinds of repro patches and other junk coming from there, E-bay is full of these items.

I think he's referring to my Benrus. As good condition as it's in, I doubt that it ever left the world and probably never made it off the supply sergeant's wrist.

Yeah, my bunk mate in WOEC was a special forces tech warrant who had been a LRRP in Vietnam and he told me there were three things every SF guy has to have.

A Rolex
A tiger eye sapphire ring
And a divorce

Most Vietnam soldiers wore a Timex bought in the PX for $10 at the time. They "took a licking and kept on ticking", were water proof which was the big thing and they were cheap.  All the military watches were probably scarfed up by the REMF's.

I have a thing for watches and WW2 history. I have always wanted to start collecting WW2 aviation watches but am afraid as I don't know enough about them and afraid of getting burned as a know nothing newb.

I felt that way about GI 1911s at one point as well and now I think I have like nine of them or something

Maybe I should just stay away from watches!

well hail........I've got the 607..........I've got the '63 Rolex............now I need I pair of those cool jungle boots from the other thread. (advisors boots, size 11.5)  What else would make for a cool pic?   I'm always picturing the pic of the advisor that is sitting up on the back of a vehicle, truck or something, and I think he's holding a 602?  anyone know the pic?

I know mine is real because it was issued to me in 1969 from 3/9 Battalion Supply.
