This is not a solicitation to sell, nor is it a request for money or orders.

I have found a very clear copy of the original Colt blueprints for the XM177E1/E2 flash suppressor and was looking at it to make a muzzle brake compensator like the old Muzzle Mizer for my Daniel Defense Mk 18 pistol.

I took it to a machine shop here in town that does custom fabricating to get an idea on costs if done in 4130 steel, and it was suggested to set a basic design to see if the design and start up costs can be justified.

From looking at it, seems most people who are interested in these would want something they can either pin/weld on a 11.5 inch barrel to make legal so it should be 4.6 inches overall to make the legal rifle length, or factory Colt clone size and length for those making a semi pistol - with comp ports on the top of the suppressor body with no partitions to make it a comp like the Muzzle Mizer with a jam nut shaped like the old Colt grenade launcher spacer.

So, what would people most be likely to want - DO NOT SAY YOU WANT A XM607 Short suppressor - aint gonna happen from me.

I would like to know if there is enough interest since I would have to submit samples to BATF to make sure it is a legal flash hider and not suppressor (I know about the Tech Branch issues already).  There is a fairly significant cost outlay and I dont want to get involved if this doesnt even cover the costs.

From talking with people who made them as Feux suppressors for Retros - there was not enough interest in people who would pay for them to justify have them designed, CNCéd, parked and packaged.

Smallest production run would be a minimum of 500 of each type to keep costs to below $75 each.

Post what type would be most appealing if you can.  Mods - if this is not the right forum LMK.

1. Original Colt XM177E2 4.33" length with Comp vector pin hole cuts on the top with flash hider vents like Colt Factory with jam nut for orientation of comp vents.

OR

2. Original Colt XM177E2 suppressor only in legal 4.6" length with flash hider vents like factory with pin/weld hole milled in base for  permanent mount on 11.5 inch barrels to legal length.  No internal partitions, just external vector pin hole cuts.

NO NFA VERSIONS WILL BE MADE OR EVEN TALKED ABOUT.

Just an observation concerning the pin/weld hole... On a non-timed muzzle device (one that doesn't use a crush or peel washer to get the "bottom" at the 6:00 position), I'd personally recommend no pin/weld hole pre-drilled.  The reason is, since the device isn't timed, the hole will only be at the 6:00 position randomly.  I prefer to install the device and drill through the device and into the barrel at the 6:00 position, insert the pin, and weld.  Some may not mind the weld on the side or no top, but I think a lot of guys want that weld at the bottom.

you have your work cut out for you if you want to make a better reproduction than brick already does

I don't think that you're 4.6 inch moderator will make legal length on an 11.5 inch barrel due to the approximately half inch overlap of the threads.

The best reproduction has been done already by Brick.

Anything longer doesn't look correct and retro heads are all about the details.

We either build it with a 12.5" barrel and pin and weld or as a pistol/sbr on an 11.5".

Not sure if this is a Brick or not. It came with the upper.

All very good points.

Hard to beat something produced by Brick with his quality and price point.

Guess I will make my Muzzle comp and forget making more than what I need.

Thanks All.

I agree with Brick's being the best, and at a great price...but we'd still be interested in seeing your comp.

Brick hasn't offered XM177 replica Moderator's in quite a while. His replica is tops I know, and in demand. But I want one like today for my on hold XM177 build waiting for Brick. If another manufacture went to bat I'd currently support them. Sorry.

That sounds a lot like the old Fabian bros. DTA mil-brake.   I've been looking for one just to try it out.

I have a couple of those in the parts stash...though that pic doesn't show the lock nut they came with

of the two I have, one is marked Fabian Bros. and the other one is (I think) a clone made by DPMS and unmarked

If you make a retro styled muzzle brake either based on the XM moderator or the 3 prong, now that could be something that could gain some interest...especially in ban states

I've been looking unsuccessfully for something like this for a few years now...I want a few of them for 605 barrels

I'm in the same boat with my XM177E2 SBR build. All I need is a 4.5 moderator, can't find one anywhere and no idea when Brick will offer his again.

Personally I'd like one of the IDF moderator/brakes you see on early shorty carbines.
