The Institute of Military Technology is proud to present Mr. Jerry Miculek and the Stoner 63. The world class shooter demos the 63 on the range. He then comes inside IMT to discuss some of the weapons finer points with C. Reed Knight Jr. 4K Resolution, UHD

See the constant recoil at work?

The first assault rifle used constant recoil operating principle as well.

Amazing, thank you for that!

Threads like this are a big part of why this forum is so great, and so popular. I've said before that maybe it should be renamed "The Museum" - it's really what this forum is all about - respecting and preserving the past, as well as passing on information to keep the past alive. Thank you for posting Sir!

BTW - I always thought it interesting that the Marines tested the Stoner System in early '65 and were enamored of it, then got handed the AR15. I think the Stoner 63 family is far superior myself.

I thought constant recoil was normally dual pistons, like an AK107/108/109?

AK-107 is a counter reciprocating balance rod, more of an engineer's experiment in recoil reduction.

Constant recoil involves continued spring compression with more rearward travel of the bolt carrier, so that there is no impact or over-sprung feel to the action, like an AR15 (buffer pad impacts), or an AK (over-gassed and sprung hard, with short bolt travel).

With constant recoil, the automatic mode of fire is pleasantly smooth, and requires no real training for a soldier to use.  Amateurs can easily learn to pull off 2rd bursts within a few tries, since the cyclic rate is so much slower with constant recoil.  Seasoned soldiers can be quite deadly with it.

The Ultimax100 LMG also used this principle, and is born from Jim Sullivan, who worked with Stoner on the AR15 and Stoner 63.

The Stoner did have its issues, which included being more complex to maintain and use, and having a lot of accessories to keep track of.  Also, there was an issue with it going full auto runaway on some SEALs.  In belt fed form, the links are pretty rare and it's fickle with modified links.  It's a neat gun though, for sure.

That's why we love posting and sharing the videos. It's great being able to pass that information down and make sure that it is preserved. We do our part, but having all of you as viewers helps make that possible. Thank you for watching Sir!
