Hello retro! I've been poking around this site for some time, but have never found my way here before now. I picked up a few pieces this weekend and I'd like a few pointers on what to do. I am not really into the retro stuff, but I couldn't let this stuff continue to waste away either. I spent the last 2 days breaking everything apart and digging several years of dirt out of it. Still a lot of cleaning left to do. The upper has the potential to be shooter quality, ie no cracks or gouging. So, here we go......

The upper is in rough shape. Should I blast and refinish? Leave it as is, and display it? Something different?

To go along with the upper

Also a few random parts

Sweet.

I'm just here to read the replies, but I would love to have a KISS carbine built on a real A1 upper receiver.

Sweet!

Details on this?  Was it a whole rifle, or just the upper?  Is it yours/dads/grandpas/neighbors?

Inquiring minds NEED to know!

If it was the whole rifle, I'd be tempted to leave it with the wear and tear.  If it's just the upper, probably have to refinish it to match whatever lower and forearm, etc you mate it up with.  But, I'll let the retro guys guide you on that one.

Is the front lug rebated on the left side? I suspect it is. Colt upper - but how old? LMK about the lug. Personally I think I'd refinish it, then weather it again, LOL. I wouldn't want it corroding any more.

Those parts looks as if they've been sitting at the bottom of the "Perfume River" since the '68 Tet offensive.  I'd keep it as is and turn it into an "Perfume River" XM build

Yes, please do tell about the origin of what you found if you even know yourself, and I'd keep digging because your finding some quality parts.

So, this was found in a barn?
Link Posted: 10/21/2014 10:04:51 PM EDT

These were dug out of the dirt floor of a barn. What you see is what I got. The story goes that the place once belonged to an Army Armourer. A duffel bag full of parts was sold, the parts I have were hiding under the surface. I never saw the bag.

Here is a pic of the other side of the upper.

Edit for clarification.

If your not into the retro stuff,......Then wait for the IM's and sell to one who is .    or post in the EE under the term "retro"... etc.  Pics of barn ?

Looks like a rebated lug to me, that would put it at what, '67-68?

A vintage Hi Lift jack is my best barn find. Has the logo cast into it. One handy tool.
Keep looking. Behing stuff. In cans. under shelfs

Looks like a transitional period XM16E1 upper.

ETA: I need a .223 marked floorplate for my Colt circle 1 mag.

OP  - I happen to know someone looking for that very style upper receiver, you could always sell what you found and use the money to buy whatever kind of AR upper you want. The upper, 3prong FH, FSB, FA, port door, and rear sight parts are prolly worth around $200.00 and you still have the mag pieces, slip ring assembly, and other misc pieces that will prolly bring over $50.00. You could use the money and invest in a newer upper or keep it and know you found a few hundred bucks worth of scrap metal on your barn floor.

might be worth investing or borrowing a metal detector and see what you might have missed ??

" A duffel bag full of parts was sold..."
Sentences like that make my nipples hard and set my mind to fantasizing.

To whom was it sold?
What was in it?
Where is it now?
Does the guy want to make a quick profit??

The mere idea of a grab bag o' parts from an old Army armorer is enough to justify a quest!
Mount up, OP!  Recover that duffel!!

I do not know where the barn is. That was just the story of the previous owner. However, ya'll have motivated me to poke around for info to see if I can track down the current owner of the bag.... Wish me luck. I'm confident that I can track them down, I got names and phone numbers when I got the parts I have. I'll update if I find something.

Please feel free to contine to offer suggestions on what to do with this stuff.

I'd start by finish cleaning/oiling the parts, if you don't have a USGI brush get an old toothbrush and oil and scrub away to see how much this stuff will clean up. Then reassemble the upper receiver, I see the forward assist, port door and rod, and rear sight assembly in the pictures. After you clean everything, take inventory and post it up here, we will help tell you what exactly you have, and if you want to know values on everything...there's an official appraisal thread on the top of this forum. Then you can either keep the parts or list them for sale, I know at least 3-4guys looking for a receiver like you have, so if you decide to sell, it will go quick. Hope this is of some help to get you started.

Brush the heavy rust off the steel parts and build something. Those parts are (beautifully) ugly for certain, but still functional. I wouldn't refinish a thing. Your biggest challenge would be to make a lower match that upper.

Not to turn this into a "safe" thread or anything, but I just got off the phone with the current duffel bag owner. He is going to email me an inventory of the bag. My thoughts now are that I am going to see if he has the parts to complete an upper. Wish me luck.

The owner of the duffel bag is just going to hand it over or have you made financial arrangements? Keep us posted.

The suspense is killing me. Like a gold chest, but better.

How come soneone else has bag? Whats the story on how you came to own parts you have and bag is with someone else?

op that would make one fine battle field pick up rifle.

or sell it all, and use that money for a shiny new PSA premium blem m4 upper.

The OP made it sound as if the barn was either gone and he dug where the inside of the barn was or the barn is falling down and he was inside scavaging. I'd be out there with my metal detector searching every square foot of the inside of the barn or the area where the inside was at one point.

Low pressure bead blast the upper, see what you have under the spray paint and moly lube coat.   Maybe with some minor hand sanding the rough spots, you can have it reanodized into something sweet.

Maybe this "Armorer" was actually D.B. Cooper and his partner held a Duffel bag full of cash for the OP to find by leaving a series of clues "The D.B. Cooper Code" By Dan Brown. The OP just found out that he's the hidden secret and needed to meet his followers in Bermuda.

I don't know what's true or not, but. Notice that the dug-up parts all appear to be from one rifle, and the kind of stuff junked in favor of tacticool. I would expect to see a wide variety of parts from different guns if an armorer was careless in a dirt floored barn.

Just sayin'
