Built a retro upper this afternoon with some parts I had been accumulating over the last couple of months. Figured I would post a new thread and throw in some pics of the upper. Inspired by the 605. Threw in the 20" upper as well. I've got another retro project in the works and can't wait until it's done! The disease has become irreversible.

Specs:
Colt 604 upper
16" Spike's dissipator lightweight barrel
John Thomas duckbill 3 prong
Slickside BCG (maybe Colt?)
NDS charging handle
NDS-XM16E1 lower

*Terrible photographer.

That is one handsome old firearm! There is nothing like an original slabside, incl. the triangular handguards! Cheers, love it, where'd you get the carry-handle upper & the handguards?

It's very nice, but you gotta chop off that bayonet lug. It looks great but it will look even better with that lug gone. Nice Job

ETA- The 604 is perfect.

The whole rifle in the picture was actually purchased from a local guy a couple of years ago. I believe it's an original Colt 604 upper. The handguards on the 16" upper were purchased off of the ARFCOM equipment exchange (shoutout to boywonder777) as was the 604 receiver (can't remember the guy).

Thanks! Don't worry the bayo lug is coming off. What's the most effective method? Dremel? Hacksaw?

Dremel with a cutoff wheel then use the orange grinding stone to smooth it out and grind the rest of it flush.

NIce Combo. I have all three types of lowers and a 604 and and 2 603 Uppers. Need to figure out all the combinations that can be made.

I like the partial fence lower just because of the captive pivot pin. My 601 lower's non-captive pin is a bit of a pain to get out without a bullet tip.

The 605 IIRC had a rifle length shortened barrel so the bayonet would not work, hence the removal of the lug.

Same with the majority of the 600 carbines.

A 605 build is next on my list. I am going to use a 20" barrel, have it cut down to 16", and have the gas port opened up just a bit (.100-.110). I plan on buying one of the M16 parts kits from SG since it has most all of the part I will need. I will need to find a slickside upper and order a NDS-XM16E1 lower. I figure that it will be about July or August before I will be able to finish it. It could be earlier if Mike and Harlan can get me a lower sooner than 9 months from date of order. If anyone has a line on a slickside upper, let me know. I will need a XM Grey flat handguard retaining ring too.

You have a good plan but the barrels are actually shorter than 16" long, hence the pin/weld 3-prongs. If your sending it out JT knows what to do, all you have to do is write 605 on a piece of paper, anything else you want done and put it in the box with the barrel.

I didn't think I had to explain that part.

Nice pair!

JT will be test firing my 605 upper this week. If everything goes as planed, I should have it back in my hands by the end of the week. JT is a great guy who takes pride in his business. Because of this, he goes above and beyond on his customer service. I'll be posting a thread with pictures as soon as I get it together. I have all the parts ready and waiting...
