Which one do I use?

I currently have it mounted with a standard crush washer, but I don't think that's correct, as the flat sides of the flash hider do not turn fully into position.  It requires something thinner.

Would this work...

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/accessories/crush-washer-5-8-6-8-300-308.html

...or would I require something different?

the correct one is a split washer.  there are a few different variations with the knurling pattern and some are unknurled.  i don't think there are any modern ones that look right, the ones available commercially now are twice as thick and don't look right.

I think the A1 used a split washer and A2 used peel washer, IIRC

Hmmm.

Wonder if I could just find a standard split washer at a hardware store and use that...

Bound to be something similar out there that will work. Guess I'll look around a bit and see what I can find.

Anyone ever try one of these?

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/187501/dpms-lock-washer-ar-15

EDIT: Read the reviews.  It's thick, and one reviewer said it destroyed the finish on both the barrel and flash hider when he tried to remove it.

There's gotta be something out there that would work and look correct.  Even if it is in a silver finish, it would be trivial to hit it with Norrell's to make it the right color.

Didn't the A2 use both? Peel early, & crush later.

actually early A2's used a peel washer, then later switched to the crush washer as stated by hk45shooter

Really. I understood it was the other way around. I thought the peel washer was a later innovation.

Morg, go look in the variation guides at the top of the page..in the carbine guide you'll see the 700 series guns using peel washers and the 900's using crush washers

and further down the page you'll find this:

Early lock washer on left, as used on the 600 series. Middle is the A2 peel washers used to time the A2 flash suppressor to TDC on the 700 series, and early M4/A1’s. Right is the current crush washer used on the M4/A1 starting in 2000:

no problem buddy...I wouldn't have known that little tidbit either except for the fact that my early AR15A2 had a peel washer

Bill Ricca, Pack of ten $25.00, that's $2.50 apiece when you break it down. You could buy some and sell a few to the other retro-heads.

Bill Ricca is THE MAN. I haven't bought much from him, but what I did get was excellent stuff. USGI. My Xm16E1 BCG came rom him - albeit through another member who I bought it from off the EE. He bought it from Bill 20 years previously. Bill has been doing it awhile.

Bound to be something similar out there that will work. Guess I'll look around a bit and see what I can find.

CK last post in thread.

Mine was silver tho.  Mount it in a vise at a right angle between the jaws with the split positioned next to a jaw so it won't close when you tighten the vise.  Just a few twists with a hand reamer will do the trick.

I picked up about 10 that were blackened from a local supply house. They have a slight texture on the outside rim
but the colour and fit is right. I will have to post up a pic later. They were $0.10 each

That knurling looks almost exactly like the ones I picked up (couldn't get the knurling to show on my crappy cell camera). These might be slightly thicker though
but at 10 cents a pop I can live with that

OP if you want I can send one your way

Those are the "thicker" ones.  The USGI split lock washers are significantly thinner than those.

my split washer looks smooth just to look at it, but if you use a magnifying glass you can barely see it has cross hatching.

Are the flash hider flats supposed to be vertical?  oops, when I tightened mine it came up just short of horizontal, I didn't know there was a standard position?

Look for a 1/2" hi collar lock washer. Regular hardware store may not keep them, an industrial supply house should. I haven't used one, but I've seen a lot of them when I worked at a fastener warehouse. Most of them will have a black oxide finish.

Link Posted: 9/16/2014 7:41:24 AM EDT
[#28]
These are 5/8"  (and 3 stacked in the pic. I will take another tonight (if I get back in time.....have to shoot a motorcross race tonight at the county fair) installed on a barrel next to a real one for thickness comparison

EDIT: they are about twice as thick.

ETA: I will have to do a measure and see if these are enough to bring a 14.5" with a pinned A1 to 16" total.
