So I was shooting my early XM16E1 Rifle at a steel target and a round richocheted and almost hit her. Watch her reaction. I was trying to see where to adjust the sights.http://vid268.photobucket.com/albums/jj19/tom051876/IMG_0723_zpsbdd46178.mp4

Here is the orignal post with the other videos and pics. I guess I was luckyOriginal Range report/pics

Yah I hadnt adjusted the sights and was using KY windage. It was shooting to the right so i had to adjust. I eventually found out where to aim. Also if you enlarge the video you can see 2 richchets that went between us. I thought that those AR 500 targets were supposed to deflect the rounds towards the ground? Guess it wasnt working that day. She say oh SH___ I think a bullet just almost hit me.

Thanks I am glad she wasnt hurt too. I though she just got spooked but after seeing the video I see she was right. I am not sure how close it was but it seems pretty close from the video.

Little too close for shooting steel with a 5.56mm.  I generally use 100 yards for the AR and 150 for 30 cal.

Glad your girl's okay.

I was hit in the hand by a richocet from a French Mas36 in July, that's a 7.5x54 round. It hit the gunstock first thank god and hit me dead center in the same hand that was surgically repaired 7-8 weeks earlier from an accident at work.

ETA - No matter how safe you are accidents can and will happen, let's just be grateful nobody was seriously hurt.

I was shooting a steel target with a .22lr at that distance. It ricocheted and hit me in the thigh. The welt was the size of a goose egg. I only shoot steel that is sloped at 45 degrees and a lot farther away now.

Glad everyone is ok....got hit by a guy shooting at a range local to me with a pistol last year...don't know what the hell he hit but was shooting .40 at about 10 yards i guess he hit the contraption above the target a nice chunk of round came back and gouged my left hand pretty good but no permanent damage.

Struggling to see it in the video but thanks for sharing the lovely rifle and the story and again glad everyone was ok!

Were you wearing eye pro? It didn't look like it.

No real backstop, looks like no ear or eye pro, close to a steel target...

Just a matter of time until someone gets hurt.

Yes I had eye protection and the gunfire doesnt bother me. I have been around plenty in 20 years of Army service. But I usually wear hearing protection. Also there is a backstop...there is a creekbed behind the tree with the target. All the rounds would lodge into the little hillside. Too close to the target yes I agree lession learned.

Did you hang the target properly to deflect the rounds?

Well didnt have a instruction pamplet that came with the target but used 2 long hardened bolts and nuts about 4 inches long fastened to the targets two holes whiich was atached to a large chain wraped around a 4 inch diameter tree branch. Was just a raw steel sillowette with two holes in it for mounting. I primed it and painted it bright orange. looks like they have a warning on the web site where i bought it from. If you buy one of these just be carefull.

I think I watched that video 100 times and showed every shooter buddy. Can you imagine if it didn't hit the ground first? He's lucky it hit his hearing protection, cause even hitting the ground that looked like enough velocity to kill him if it struck a few inches to the left. I don't believe a forehead hit would of been survivable.

I think they all say to be at least 100 yards away for rifles.

Look up how to hang them at an angle it will deflect the bullets into the ground.

I was told to angle them slightly towards you, even so accidents do happen.

Everything I see has a pretty extreme deflection, like30-40 degrees.  Ive shot at about 50 meters and that seemed ok. 10 meters with pistol and still had some spall.
