Okay,

I was wondering if anyone had some advice on what I should do....

I have a set of triangular handguards that I would like to use on an XM16E1 or M16A1 clone build.
However one of them has a shiny finish..........the other has a matt finish.  Has anyone else run into this?
Should I try and shine up one or subdue one?  Should I use them the way they are?
Maybe post a Want To Trade topic somewhere and see if anyone is in the same situation as me?  LOL and just switch?

I will post some pictures later today after I take some.

The possibilies are endless... You could refinish both by wet sanding them with 600 grid paper, then buffing with white rouge on a wheel. If they turn out too shiny, you can knock them down with a scuff pad or steel wool. Don't sand too much or you may get some molthing (color specks) on the shiny one. This is what I do when I repair a set, but I try to start with as close a set as possible. If a set is real bad and I want a matt finish, I DuraCoat them matt black, then oil after a week. I don't think there is really a right or wrong answer here, just getting the look you want.

Okay, that's food for thought.
The heat shield inside them are very slightly different..........I know a picture speaks a thousand words.......will post some later this evening.
But the outside appear identical.

That would make sense. Flat one is probably newer and marked either L or R. The shiny one is more then likely older from what I have seen. If the left one is matt, you could get a NOS right one from places like Sarco new in the wrapper for $10. I'm going to guess that you have a matt right one already. From time to time you will see sets on PIF that you could find a mate to either one. truth is it sounds like you currently don't have an exact pair.

Post a picture and I'm sure we can offer up other suggestions.

I gave 5-6 sets away on the PIF thread in the last few months and others have too, I'd just watch that or Buy another set and see what combo looks the best together.

Buy more HGs and mix and match til you get what you want... That's what most of us did -

Seriously, I would try to figure what look you are going for. Vintage 60's would probably mean shiny. The matt piece may never shine up exactly the same as the other. Like others have suggested, shop around for one that's the mate for the shiny one. And have fun doing it.

The Left one has the matt finish.  And as you guessed it is marked with an "L" on the heat shield.

The Right one is has the shiny finish and has no markings.

There are differences in the heat shields and rivet placement.  Other then that, both are a bit scuffed up but no cracks.
I have two builds planned..........it would be awesome if I could luck out and find a set opposite of what I got......LOL.......

Cool.......but one question.  Should I add the Louisiana Hot Sauce before or after painting?

Before painting, it helps prep the surface for good adhesion.

Thought I would post an update.  I bought a new right side hand guard from Sarco as suggested by 5437.  And it did turn out to match my matt finished left hand guard.

So here are some pictures.  I am pleased.....Thanks for all who gave advice and suggestions.  I have taken notes for future reference.    This place is great!

Now for some pictures.........so you can see how well they match now.

Glad you where able to do a cheap match. They look great. Just remember that that cheap match is going to cost you a new rifle. I think I am up to seven spare complete sets of hardware at this point. That is not counting the complete rifles. Believe it or not, I have given a couIple sets away. It started out the same way as you are here. Match a set by repairing a set. Some how I am always ending up with one extra. I have yet I find a damaged one I could not repair.
