I picked up a Colt 9mm SMG parts kit and can't decide on which lower to put it on.  I have two SBR lowers to pick from.  One is gray A1 style and the other is black A2 style.  The upper is black, but missing most of it's finish, so I will probably have it re-finished anyway.

All the 635s I have seen were black, FWIW.

I do know the early ones did not use the 3/4 door and 9mm bumper however, if that helps. There's a Colt advertising pic floating around here somewhere for the A2 family of weapons that should help. I think Mike at NDS posted it a few times. Check the old 733 threads.

I may turn it into a DOE clone. So many choices.

I think either would look good. I'd go with gray personally, as it feels more retro Colt than black. Just me tho, YMMV.

Good luck with the build!!

The early ones were dark grey, just like the A2s of that time.  The transition to the true black color was like 92~95 or so.  There were some early M4 flattops in dark grey.

I had designs on buying a couple of dark grey anodized NDS lowers marked 9mm to put on my old Colt uppers, but never got around to it then SH happened...

I swear i recall seeing some DOE uppers dark gray back when you could get the parts kits.
(Before clones were made)

Tell me I'm not going crazy.
