I just came back from the local fun show.  A guy had a SP1, that was an all original 1972 in "Coltguard" finish.  The receivers, barrel, and FH were a silver color.  The lower parts, selector, bolt release, ect. were black. It also had round handguards.  He claimed he was offered $1800.00 and turned it down.  I didn't ask what he wanted.
I found a pic on the net that was close, but had triangle handguards.  Has anyone ever seen one of these ?

Doesnt sound like an original at all, and at typical gunshow prices

Yes, they are legit.  "Coltguard" was what Colt called them.  The main assemblies were electroless nickle plated.  The plating marrs easily, but is not easy to scratch through.  They are uncommon, but not overly valuable.

Yep. And if the Serial Number dated to 1972, and it was a 20" barrel SP1 (not a carbine), the handguards were replaced.

The Coltguard rifles were made about 1982 if I remember correctly. There were only about 1000 made and most of those were in the 202,000 serial number range. I have seen a couple in the very low 203,000 range. The description you have provided sounds all correct except that the rifle should have the triangular handguards.

They are replacement handguards, likely made by Lone Star.  Was the finish pretty rough on it?

I have one of these, I got it back in the late 80's used for $450.  Mine has the triangular handguards.  I bought it because it was different.  I was told they did not sell good because people buying AR's did not want something that was not black.  Over the years the area where the web of the trigger hand touches the receiver has freckled the finish.  It is different.

That is correct. I've had several of these over the years; all were in the 202k range and they were all plain-vanilla SP1s.

They were all identical in having the major components electroless nickel finished with black small parts.

I had one set up with wood furniture (which I kept when I sold the rifle); I'll see if I can pictures to post.

BTW - Colt did a number of Colt-Guard guns in addition to the ARs. I have seen several revolvers in that finish as well.

Colt experimented with that finish but although it looked really nice when fresh it was much softer than actual plating and scuffed very easily.

Colt-Guard was not a success and those guns are now just another obscure example of a technical solution in search of the right problem.

Okay here's the first batch of photos. I really don't remember when I had which, so I'm going by the file creation date.

I'm trying to link these over from an online storage location so hopefully they'll show up okay:

This last one shows how prone to scuffs and marks the ColtGuard finish was:

And here's the last one. This was my favorite; I got the walnut furniture from an eBay auction back before they banned eevil gun parts.

The guy said they'd been on a gun made or prepared by Springfield Armor as some sort of commemorative.

Love it or hate it - but it sure got attention at the range!

Here's another image of a ColtGuard that was on Gunbroker at some point.

I kept it because this was supposed to be "in the box" unfired and in original condition.

BTW, notice that some of the parts in #3 above are silver - I did that, I don't remember what I used but the goal was to make everything match.

I didn't get it finished before I sold the gun - law school is expensive - but as I said I did keep the furniture.

One of these days I'll get another silver gun and set it up again.

ETA: Flash hider isn't black, that's the muzzle cap.

As a side note, here are a few pictures of the little-know "Z-Coat" gun.

This was a limited run by the Colt Custom shop that was really nothing more than some camo out of rattle cans.

Well, they probably used an air brush. But still. You'd think they'd have used something more durable, but the coatings we take for granted weren't in the mainstream yet.

I think it was done to promote the release of the Government Model production run; note the date on the product page and the serial number on the gun.

It came with its own camo carrying case, which was nothing more than a cheap Ace Case.

Here's what the box end label looked like (this one from a different gun up for auction):
