Damn Osprey, that is what I call a "gunship". Even if it is tended to and flown by the Air Force. Anyone on the ground needing help would love a couple of those flying close support covering extraction from a hot PZ. |

Courtesy of The Firearm Blog: "The photo below was taken at a Malaysian counterinsurgency training exercise last year. The men pictured are members of VAT-69, the Royal Malaysian Police's paramilitary commandos, and were playing the part of the terrorists during the exercise. The weapons they are armed with are fascinating. The firearms, with the obvious exception of the HK416, were confiscated from Communists terrorists during the 2nd Communist Insurgency (1968 - 1989)." |

Colt actually came out with the round HGs in the 60's but the big Green machine didn't want them then. Someone here (tgus?) had a set for sale for awhile - they didn't have cooling vents though IIRC. Later, in the early '80's A2 upper receivers were hard to get, so the military brought a bunch of their M16A1's up to M16A1E1 spec, basically by replacing the barrel with a 1:7 (early ones were A1 profile BTW) and putting A2 furniture on them. I was shown one of these in ROTC around '85 and my instructor was pissed because he had wanted to show us the then new rear sight. To this day there are a number of improvements that Colt has made to the M4, but that either weren't adopted at all, or took awhile - one of them was the heavier 'H' buffer. |

I've seen a few photos of regular grunts with E1s and I'm sure a few E2s found their way into regular units but for the most part, those carbines were allocated for SOF and their indig. I've mostly seen photos of SEALs with early CAR-15s (607s). |

Its possible these got traded around other special units, but the numbers were so small that it would be hard to tell. The XM177E1 was initially intended for RTOs, and dog handlers, but quickly found its way to specialized units, as well as officers. I think the E2 was earmarked specifically for specialized units. |

I believe it's a 602 - I say that not because of the color of the furniture, but because of the newer style CH and more importantly, it looks like an engraved arrow near the rear sight wheel.

Looks like the buttstock is green, they might have just put on new hanguards when the orginal green ones needed replacement. On the charging handle, I bet they updated to the new charging handle because its a better design. GI's do it now, and they did it back then. I think its a 601.
|
|
|
See, the buttstock doesn't look green to me - I think the minor green tint is just the reflection of green that's around him. Secondly, if it were green, why tape the thing with green tape? There were black 601's of course, but I still think it's a 602. Either way, great pic. I spent much of yesterday going through this thread again. I just wish some pics hadn't been lost due to members changing ISP accounts/photo accts etc.

These are really cool pics, sportin the Tiger Camo.
Does anyone what the Government plans on doing for the out of date Colt M16A2's and M4's? The latest feed says that the M4 will most likely get a facelift or be completely phased out. |

I believe the M4/M16 platform has not reached the end of useful life and could solider on for decades to come, with or without major or minor upgrades. Special operations forces tend to purchase whatever they wish to use anyway. The best candidate is the FN SCAR series of weapons IMHO. The gov't just needs to ramp up and put these in the supply chain. No change in caliber, so no logistics issues here. |

Its hard as hell to teach a new 249 gunner let alone an entirely new weapons platform. |

I don't know about that. 'You WILL learn this' seems to work, of course no boot in the ass these days. Weapons systems are generational things. My main piss and moan is I think it should be law that we use a US desigend and manufactured weapon system. SOF can use whatever they require for their mission, but the standard issue arm should be US made. Otherwise WTF are we about?

I don't mind using foreign designed stuff. As long as we buy the design, not license, not rent.
Then bid that out to whomever can build it here. No special favors to a US located, foreign owned plant. Of course, I think the same thing about domestic designs. Buy the design and bid out the manufacturing. Colt's contract in perpetuity for the M16 series being a great example of how we shouldn't be doing it. Does anyone else think it odd that the constitution forbids funding the mil more than two years at a time, but we have a contract with a vendor since 1966? |

For more on Tim Page, read Dispatches by Michael Herr, or the most excellent The Cat From Hue by John Lawrence. Somebody in Herr's book told Page "there's an airstrike in your future, Page" and he was right. Page did indeed get hisself blown to smithereens in an airstrike, but survived and (more or less) recovered.
