Cute POOCH!

My Lab/Husky likes watching/helping me build my rifles.  It's great until she takes off with a brand new stock and chews it up.  She also ripped off a scope flip-cover and ate it.  ARGH.

You guys have some nice MA-Ten builds going.

I have a few questions regaurding building a MA-ten:

1) I plan on using a UBR stock, I was wondering whitch of the two buffers I should get from Slash, the CAR-10 (5.5oz) or the CAR-10 XH (6.5oz), (I am planning on running a 20" barrel with a rifle length gas system)?

2) Is any one running a Troy Rail? How does it mount to the gun? Where can I get the barrel nut for MA-Ten(DPMS) to mount the troy or does it come with one?  Any other sugustions for longer (like  around 14", 13.2", 13.8" ) rails? (I like the DD rail but want a few inches longer)

3) As far as a gasblock and tube go, are they the same as an AR-15? (provided the barrel OD is 3/4")

4)  As far as the the Phase 5 Extended Bolt release would I need the EBRv2/308 or would the EBRv2 for AR-15 work?

5) Does anyone know Ig a POF bolt would work with a DMPS style barrel and Bolt carrier?

6) When using a MIAD grip are you having to use the SR-25 adapter when using the back straps (is there a gap above the back strap?) or does it fit nicely with out it?

7) Any one have any pic of a 12" DD rail on a 20" barrel?

ATA:

8) Can you run a VLTOR/Bravo Gunfighter charging handle in the MA-Ten? (I have one in my 5.56 AR and love it)

9) If I went with a PRS (308 version) instead of a UBR does the charging handle interfere with the cheek rest at all?

Thanks!!

i can only answer so far: UBR: I went with the car Xheavy because I am going to run a suppressor.  I got the phase5 308 version.  It fits.  it's tight.  i haven't gotten a chance to shoot it yet, or work it with a complete upper, but from what I can feel of it, it will work.   I don't know about the rest.

The heavy buffer is supposed to be used when using a can, but if it cycles in your gun I would say get it. Its a pricey gamble, so I went with the regular on mine so i knew it would cycle.

The troy rail seems to clamp around any regular barrel nut. Thats how it works with both the ar10 and the dpms. You can order the nut here for a dpms 308 DPMS NUT or atleast thats my understanding. Hopefully some else with real experiance can chime in

3) As far as a gasblock and tube go, are they the same as an AR-15? (provided the barrel OD is 3/4")
Yup, as long as it is .750 diameter at the gas hole you can use an ar15 gas block

4)  As far as the the Phase 5 Extended Bolt release would I need the EBRv2/308 or would the EBRv2 for AR-15 work?
308 version as mentioned above

5) Does anyone know Ig a POF bolt would work with a DMPS style barrel and Bolt carrier?
Not sure, I would just use the regular DPMS style and not worry about it.

6) When using a MIAD grip are you having to use the SR-25 adapter when using the back straps (is there a gap above the back strap?) or does it fit nicely with out it?
My MOE fits nicely, but i have not taken a MIAD off another gun to try it out.

7) Any one have any pic of a 12" DD rail on a 20" barrel?
sorry cant help

ATA:

8) Can you run a VLTOR/Bravo Gunfighter charging handle in the MA-Ten? (I have one in my 5.56 AR and love it)
BCM makes a gun fighter for the 7.62 rifles. I have them coming, but are not here yet

9) If I went with a PRS (308 version) instead of a UBR does the charging handle interfere with the cheek rest at all?
I dont belive so. If it works on other 308 rdpms or ar10 rifles, it will work with the mega sets.

Thanks!!

Hope that helps

we will...  i have an email into mega machine to see if they are interested in helping (not likely, but couldn't hurt).  Also spoke with LaRue Tac yesterday and they said No Go.

I did find a guy on this forum that has supposedly done this already and am awaiting his response.  Specifically, he had a DPMS style barrel nut for a LT10-13.  It's doable.  I think there ought to be barrel nuts readily available and will make it so.

the 13.2 is exactly the rail I want to use on a 16 inch bhw barrel and a battlecomp. wonder why larue won't even entertain the idea? mega might since they are trying to make a cross platform .308 but your right probably not. I hope you hear back from him soon. my reciever set is nowhere to be seen so theres no rush.

FWIW, I use XH buffers in ALL of my AR10s, with and without a suppressor.
I designed the XH for use with a suppressor, but I soon found out there are benefits to using them in unsuppressed guns as well.
100% reliability as long as you use good ammo and everything else is right with the gun.

So the regular CAR-10  (5.5) would work too then?

My build has stated, at least the parts gathering phase.  I should have enogh money to get the lower done.  Then as cash allows I will be buying additional parts.

I know its a small start, but I ordered a Rock River LPK and a gas tube tonight.

I just need to visit the bank to move some fund around and I can order the upper/lower set.  Hopefully this week or early next week.

Here is my plan if you guys have any suggustions please let me know.

MA-Ten upper/lower
RRA LPK
Rainier arms 308 20" barrel (DPMS)
DPMS Chrome BCG
Troy MRF-308 13.8" Rail
UBR Stock
Slash's CAR-10 Buffer (5.5oz)
Smith's Vortex Flash hider or PWS FSC30
Troy folding sights

Then moding as funds allow
VLTOR 7.62 Bravo Gunfighter charging handle
Phase 5 EBRv2
MIAD grip
RRA ambi safety
Geisselle Trigger (not sure which one yet)
Glass (I will be using my New Redfield 3-9x40 with rings untill i can afford a Leopold on Larue mount)

alright... a little update on the LaRue Tactical 11" ar10 rail.

It is NOT a go.  I got it in today.  There is MUCH to be filed off the upper in order to get the LaRue 'keeper' to fit.  I have heard this may or may not be necessary to mount the rail, but It's supposed to keep the rail from turning under pressure, so I would want it on there.  I will take some pics of it tomorrow before work, but suffice to say I am very disappointed.  I believe this is the sole reason that LaRue does not want to make nuts for this.  I know in the instructions it says that light dremel work/modifications would have to be made for the keeper, but this is beyond 'light dremeling.'

I am going to sell it and go with either a Daniel Defense rail or something else.  Sorry for getting anyones hopes up.  If the DPMS receiver is any different from the Ma-Ten, it may not require as much dremeling, but for a ma-ten, it's a no-go.

Pics:

Here is the keeper. Its sitting on the uppers threads, it needs to be butted up against the upper

Side PIc:

This shows what needs to be "dremeled" from the upper, or how a new keeper should be made:

This one is the keeper sitting on top of the upper threads.  You can see in this why it needs to be further down:

This is where the upper needs to be 'shaved' down if you use the larue keeper:

FYI.. I installed a regular mag release (RRA) in my MA-TEN and didn't like the fact that the mag release button had only 2-3 threads engaged. I ordered a Armalite AR-10 mag release and it looks correct now. The AR-15 mag release worked fine but my OCD could not stand the big hole in mag release button. The AR-10 mag release only has 2 or 3 more threads on it but it fits and looks better IMO

My rifle is finished except for the barrel which will be an 18" Noveske.  I decided not to go with the Kaiser barrel - no straight answer on bolt compatibility, and I will probably end up wanting Noveske anyway. Here is the parts list:

MA-TEN upper/lower
CMT lower parts (except for mag button and bolt catch)
DPMS bolt catch (this fit my rifle fine but I did have to hone off a small imperfection on the side that made it fit tight.  Birchwood Casey flat super black was used to cover the resulting bare metal and is a perfect match to the phosphate finish - the bolt catch functions perfectly now)
AR10 mag catch button (taller than the AR15 ones - functions better)
Magpul MIAD grip
Magpul UBR stock
Slash AR10 buffer and spring
AR10 BCG
VTAC/JP 12" modular handguard
Troy BUIS front/rear
TA01B ACOG with arms throw lever mount
AAC Blackout FH

Just need that Noveske barrel now.  I figure the build will have cost around $2100 minus the optic.  I hope it shoots straight.
I sure learned a lot about .308 AR's in the process.

Having an issue with my Phase 5 Tactical 308 ver2.  It will not hold the bcg open.  The 'nub' on top doesn't seem long enough, OR, i can't press it in far enough to initialize.  I confirmed by reinstalling the ar15 part, and attempting to initialize a bolt hold open, and it worked.  Not sure if it needs some refining, or if I have a bad one?

This is the exact same problem I have with both of my DPMS .308 bolt catches on both of my lowers. The .308 bolt catches seem to be hit or miss depending on the tolerances of your lower and the bolt catch itself.

Are you guys both using DPMS Bolts?  I am starting to wonder if the bottom of the DPMS bolts are somehow smaller than the Armalite BCG's.  I have an Armalite BCG in my MA-TEN build and have been looking to pick up a Phase 5 V2 but dont want to drop the cash if it wont fit.

Vmpglenn, Nolo-
Can either of you guys throw up photos of the issue with the bolt stop, like where it is binding up or whatever? Does it look like it is catching up somewhere? Can you try moving it without the spring and dent and make sure that the problem is not with the spring and detent not being strong enough. Will it lock back if u push it manually to engage, or is the range of motion blocked by the receiver?

Yeah.  I'll go take some pics of it.  It's hard to tell exactly where on the rifle the bolt catch is rubbing.  I tried to work it back and forth to see if I could cause a wear mark and maybe sand that part down a smidge, but no luck.  Let me go see what I can do.  It will not lock back when I push the bolt catch HARD.  I don't think it has anything to do with the spring, but that is a good thing to try.

fixed it. did some minor dremel sanding/polishing on the phase 5.  took some before and after pics.  works perfect now.

eta: pics!

Here is the AR15 bolt catch/Phase 5 Tactical ebrv2 (308)

Phase 5 bottom, ar15 bolt catch top: notice how wide the phase 5 is

Surrender to the dremel! Using a basic sanding drum

Just a little off the sides and back (polishing wheel to make it smooooooth)

My bolt catch holder (small vice grips/cloth)

Sanded

Back:

Inside: (fwiw, i think this is the problem.  the ar15 bolt catch has a indentation, the 308 one does not)

SUCCESS!!!!!  Bolt catch works, as advertised!

I had a similar problem with my phase 5 tactical bolt catch as well.  The bolt catch was not moving up far enough to grab the bolt.  The bolt kept skipping across the top of the bolt catch.  I ended removing 2 coils from the bolt catch spring and the bolt catch now has it's full range of motion.

During the troubleshooting process I did not have my barrel mounted to the upper and the buffer eventually sheared off the buffer retainer pin under repeated impacts.  I guess the barrel extension usually takes the impact of the carrier assembly and buffer.
