There has been a lot of talk about the Bolt Carrier Group. I thought I'd post some picture to help anyone out. Following is the DPMS broken down and also next to a .223/5.56 BCG.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19138644/P5020164.jpg

If you buy the DPMS Chrome carrier you will also need the other parts in the picture. The Firing pin is a little hard to find. From the DPMS catalog, go to "replacement parts"' then pick any .308 rifle.  I believe shipping is free over $50 but the lead time is 5 days. The bolt is from JP Rifles and the cam pin is POF. The only part that is the same as the .223/5.56, are the key screws.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19138644/P5020165.jpg

The .308 bolt is larger. Both bolts are from JP rifles

Top is the DPMS .308 next to a Young's .223/5.56 Let me know if you need me to post any more pictures. Thanks

Just a quick update, I finished my Mega Monolithic Upper with matching lower and the DPMS LR-308 Bolt catch worked perfectly. No fitting required. I don't know how many others have had troubled getting it to work but it dropped in just perfect with mine. Pics will be coming soon

My rail will be here on Friday so it's down to FSC30 or BABC & Vortex viper pst or razor hd .

Anybody have anything to chime in on a muzzle device?

I've narrowed it down to the SJC Titan in a blued finish and the JP Cooley large profile in a parkerized finish.

My only real concern with the Titan being how durable the blued finish is vs. parkerized.  This rifle will be for both bench shooting and hunting.

Whichever one I choose will be threaded to a 21" Noveske barrel.

I went stupid and went with a Surefire brake.  they work amazingly well on an AR so i figure it should work just as well on the 308.

I just finished my build and I threw on a PSC30 but I haven't got my scope yet so I don't really have much data for you. It's nice looking though.

Does this use DPMS high or low handguards?

Since I'm waiting on my lower still, I threw it on a buddies Lr-308.  It had a softer recoil, not a huge diff but noticeable.  The big thing is there was little to no muzzle climb, just a straight rearward push. thumbs up in my book.  Just hate this waiting game for my lower.

high. There is a good download available on the Troy website that shows the difference between the two, but the Mega is about .060" taller than the new DPMS uppers

Ordered an SJC Titan- the brown van just dropped it off but I'm still stuck at work for another few hours.  The last piece of my upper- everything is being sent out tomorrow to a 'smith for fit/finishing, gunkote on the barrel/comp, headspace check and to have the compensator clocked/timed.
In the meantime, I'll assemble my lower (DD LPK, going to use the AR15 bolt catch included in the LPK, and I think it should be fine) and wait for my optic to arrive.

Question- how many of you guys run an AR10 magazine catch?  How about DPMS .308 bolt catch?  I tried to avoid DPMS in my build, but it seems like it won't be possible.  I have a DD LPK, but there is some concern with durability of the AR15 bolt catch.  Others say they run them just fine.
Also, I heard that several users are using the AR10 magazine catch as it provides more threads for the magazine release to thread to.  This is actually pretty important for me, as I live in CA and have a bullet button on my lower.

Doing some research, I see that the AR10 mag catch is better for the MA-TEN when using a Raddlock bullet button.

I used a standard AR15 mag catch - it works fine.  I used a DPMS bolt catch - it has more meat on it and engages the bolt more positively than an AR15 bolt catch.  Folks have had success using an AR15 bolt catch, but I have also heard of a few problems with the bolt not locking back on them.

ETA - the DPMS AR10 bolt catches sometimes are a little rough and may fit tight.  I simply ground it down smooth, put a cold blue compund on the exposed metal, and fit and function were perfect.

I decided to go with a Phase 5 bolt catch - anybody with one of these have issues with it crowding the trigger area?

Also I'll be using an AR10 mag catch- it has more threads and allows for the Raddlock to be backed out and operated when outside of CA.

Fellow MA-TEN owners, do any of you have the TRX-308 hand guard installed on the upper?

I received my upper back from the gunsmith and he had to cut a notched in the barrel nut to get it to torque properly and have the gas tube go into the receiver.  Unfortunately, due to the way this hand guard installs (needing to be 5 degrees off center and then twisted into place) it didn't install properly.

Did any of you have a hard time tightening the barrel nut and indexing it properly for the gas tube?

Zero problems at all.

Your smith needs to replace all affected parts and you need a new smith .

Thanks for the reply.  The smith is taking responsibility for his actions and is coming to me to pick up the upper, and has already ordered a new barrel nut.  My hope is that the inside of the hand guard isn't damaged.  I suppose we'll see how this goes.  I'll advise him to lube it up, torque it and loosen it a few times and see how it goes.

I sent Panther1911 a PM as well to find out he he resolved his issue.

  • PRI Charging Handle Big Latch - Combat

  • PSA Mil-spec Carbine Tube

  • Magpul MIAD Pistol Grip

  • Magpul CTR Stock

  • Magpul PMags

  • Noveske QD End Plate

Next on the list is: Larue RISR & POD, and PRI GenIII Rifle Length CF Forearm.  Still haven't decided on a BCG or Barrel yet.

Enjoy :)

I may have missed it but....I read that a standard AR15 H3 buffer can be used with the VLTOR AR10 buffer tube. What buffer spring should be used with this?

Could a Slash AR15 CAR buffer be used over the H3 in the VLTOR AR10 tube?  The Slash weighs more then the H3. Would this have any advantage over a standard AR15 tube and a Slash AR10 buffer?

I want to use a VLTOR buffer tube. Trying to decide between using a standard AR15 buffer tube or the AR10 tube. I want to have the best buffer/spring/tube combo possible for a 16" mid gas barrel that will be shot suppressed from time to time.

Or am I just over thinking this and either sett up works the same?

Does the MaTen share upper/lower compatibility with any other brands?

I see that it is angle cut like the Armalites and the KAC.  However would the lower and upper be interchangeable with either the Armalite or SR25?

They are compatible with LaRue .308 rifles.  A friend who has a LaRue and I swapped uppers/lowers with no problems.  I have a pic of the LaRue upper on my MEGA lower on my phone.  I'll get it posted if anyone is interested.

Very cool. Can't see all of it, but it looks like the profile at the mating surfaces is a near perfect match. Were there any noticeable gaps on either version?

Im building a MA-Ten on a monolithic upper.  I am having trouble deciding on a barrel.  Anyone have reviews on the Rainier Arms Ultra Match barrel?  The other option I found is a Kreiger.  Its a bit more, but they will headspace the bolt and use that in cutting the barrel.  Thanks!

You might also check out Blackhole Weaponry. They've got a lot of options for length, profiles, and fluting for really good prices and their quality is excellent IMHO. I have one of their .260 Remington barrels for my Ma-Ten build, can't wait to shoot it.

I'm curious myself.  I just ordered a RA Select barrel because the Ultra Match in 20" are out of stock to replace my crapped out JP barrel.  The select barrel has a 90 day money back guarantee, so if the Select doesn't give satisfactory accuracy I'll send it back for an Ultra Match when they are back in stock.

I have a Rainier UM on my MA-TEN and love it.  It is capable of sub-moa. The best I could do was 3/4" @100yrds, but im sure with match ammo and a more experienced shooter It could do better.  I also know that if you buy a barrel and BCG from Rainier that they will check headspace for you, I asked them to check mine and they didn't even charge me for it.

It's RA's policy that if a customer orderes a barrel and bolt that they headspace the barrel extension to that bolt.  You got to love customer service like that.

I just finished my Monolithic. There are small slots in the bottom to use set screws to tighten the gas block, not sure about pinning the gas block though. If I recall correctly I though I saw someone had one of the AR-15 monolithic uppers with a pinned gas block but had to do some small modifications to the webbing on the handguard to be able to set the pin.

With a SASS barrel you will have to use the SASS GB or modify the barrel a little.  The neck behind the GB seat is too tall for any other block.  I'm using one under a SWS E1 rail and it fits like a glove.

Note about the SASS barrel, it's heavy enough to club medium sized animals to death with, so if you wanna carry it at all, think about your selection.

DPMS makes a micro gas block for the SASS. I bought one from JSE Surplus for $17 and the gas tube clears the barrel with room to spare. They're out of them now but maybe you can google the part # DPMS Part No: GB-LP936. - DR

Has anybody tried using the Troy Bolt release lever? I was putting together my lower tonight and it seems to fit fine but I was unable to finish the bolt catch install due to missing a spring. The bolt catch is a DPMS 308.
