The bottom is perfectly flat, but rounded just enough to cradle in your hand.   Everyone I have had look at this rail says it's the most comfortable and natural ergonomics they have seen.   Don't expect something really wide.

I'm still struggling on getting a handle on this thing from the photos.

For those of you who have it, exactly how flat is the bottom of them? I'm deliberating between this and the Seekings SPR3 handguard for my precision build. If the Diamondhead has a flat/wide enough bottom, then I'd like to go with it, as the small size and figer grooves look appealing.

i agree completely. I just wish it had built in QD sockets at the front as the sides don't really take rails well since it's not flat.

Has anyone come up with a way of attaching a QD sling socket to the handguard?  I have an IWC QD Micro Flush QD Sling Mount in my Troy Alpha Rail and would love to somehow install one in this handguard. Could one of the holes in the side for the rails be enlarged and mount one?

Has anyone been able to find or maybe know where to get the DH T Break that the company advertised as having at the shot show?  It's the muzzle break specifically designed to go along with the DH VRS T handguard....

Can anyone tell me what the torque setting is for the barrel nut and the (2) screws that attach the handguard?  I recently purchased a 13.5" version from the EE and it didn't come with any of the factory install paperwork.

Also did the install guide say if barrel nut grease should be used?

tighten barrel nut to around 35 ft lbs ( I just tightened down without a gauge).  The 2 allen head screws should be tightened down hard, but not excessively.  And definitely use some grease on the barrel nut threads..  It helps it come off later, and keeps it snug and protected.  Just a good practice to do.

You have to order your own. I got mine for $20 or so at surplusammo.

FYI. You will need to buy a crowsfoot wrench to get proper torque specs. It the only way I found. I still need to get one to make sure all is where it should be, before taking her out to the range.

What size crowsfoot did you need? What size is the barrel nut? Unless I missed it in the thread, all I saw as the weight and length of the nut

I just installed the T-Brake from Diamondhead.  It looks great paired with the VRS-T handguard.  I haven't shot it yet, planning on doing that this weekend.  I love the look and feel of the VRS-T handguard, it is very comfortable in the hand.  The only issue I've had is that there is no option to attach a QD swivel stud without adding a small rail section. I emailed DH about it and they said they planned on making one but haven't started it yet.

I have a Spike's Tactical upper and the rail on the handguard matches up very very closely, but not perfect.  You can feel a small difference with your fingernail between the two rails (the upper's rail is a tiny bit taller).

That looks really good with the T-brake. If diamondhead releases a version with a built in QD, I'll be first in line.

Have you shot it with the brake? How loud is it?
Link Posted: 4/17/2014 3:41:40 AM EDT
[#15]
I took it out this past weekend and put about 60 rounds through it.  It seems slightly louder than the standard birdcage that was on it before, but I was out by myself so I can't really comment on any concussion that might be felt off to the sides of the shooter.

I was hoping to go shooting with a friend and swap the muzzle devices on site to get a real side-by-side comparison but he wasn't able to go.  This was the first time out with the Nikon P223 3-9x40 scope as well.

Guestimating the target at a little over 100yds, I was a bit disappointed in the groupings I was getting (hits were landing all over the board).  I'm not ready to point fingers yet but I definitely plan on doing some more testing to see if the T-Brake is adversely effecting accuracy or if it's the scope, or if it's just me.  Muzzle climb and recoil reduction are excellent and I love how it looks.

How did you time your muzzle brake?

I tried all kinds of wrenches and nothing can grip the slots of the brake because the crush washer gets in the way/wrench is too wide :( I have 2 armor's wrenches and those wont fit either

edit: nevermind, just ended up using my grinding wheel to grind down a wrench so it would fit.... good to go now

I know some have asked how to attach sling mount or stud to the VRS T w/o having to use / buy the rail sections.

10/32 threaded sling swivel stud is what's recommended by diamondhead.10-32x3/8.  Below is a link to where you can purchase them.
You can buy a 12 pack for 19.99 + $7.95 shipping on brownsnell, or buy singles from below link.

As for sling mounts on the VRS-T

I'm looking at using a sling mount from IWC like this on the side using one of the 10-32 threaded holes.

Here:

Although Diamondhead just came out with this one but it's fugly!

Not only ugly, but looks weak too.

The first doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look like it will fit the rail curvature very well.

Does anyone know if the following will physically fit:

AdamsArms XLP Mid-length Piston kit on a 16" barrel .750 underneath the Diamondhead Versabase VRS-T rails?

http://www.adamsarms.net/mid-length-piston-kit-xlp

OR:

AdamsArms .625 mid-length piston kit on a 16" barrel under the same VRS-T handguards?

http://www.adamsarms.net/mid-length-lite-625-piston-kit

And Yes, I have seen the youtube video of the idiot who "measures" the inside diameter of the handguards with a set of calipers....still haven't figured out why that moron wasted his time.

Based on the pictures I can find, it would "appear" that both of these options would fit, but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with these kits before I drop serious cash on a dead end....

StagArms has the Model 8T, but the slots on the side of the handguards are NOT the same, and I do not like how the handguards have the top cut open for the taller piston block

I tried calling both AdamsArms and Diamondhead, but neither would confirm the fit was possible.  The only thing Diamondhead said is that piston kits will not work under these handguards because of their "proprietary" barrel nut. But from what I can see, the size of the nut should not interfere with a standard gas tube, and therefore a piston kit pushrod should also not touch.

Haven't seen them on sale but Joe Bobs had them for a good price and they 5% discount for vets, mil and leo if you are one of those.  I grabbed the 13.5 inch one, real nice.

I was also thinking of putting the Adams Arms XLP kit underneath the VRS-T 10.25 rail. The Lite gas block is only if you have a lighter profile barrel. Please keep the post updated, EBW, on if you try fitting these parts and if they work for you! I'm a few weeks away from taking the plunge myself but am anxious to hear if they work for you.

Has anyone installed this on a RRA heavy stainless varmint barrel? I talked to David at Primary Arms and he said the ID of the barrel nut is 1.000" and my barrel is 1.050" according to RRA. Obviously there is .050" interference with those numbers. I would love to have a 15" version of this handguard on my 24" varminter. Does anyone have experience with this combo? About to step in to the garage and mic the barrel to confirm RRA's website. Thanks for your time.

EDIT: I measured by barrel and it was within .001" of what RRA lists on their website.

Cheers,

Brew

Has anyone had issues with their BUIS after they've installed the VRS-T?

I ask because I bought a used 13.5" VRS-T off the equipment exchange and had to adjust my rear BUIS all the way to the right when I zeroed in the sights. I have had (2) different people remove the forearm and barrel nut and re-install to make sure it was not something I did.  I do not have a scope or redot on at this time but I imagine I will have issues with the co-witness when I do.  It is mounted on a Stag Model 3.

When installing the VRS-T 10.25" on a Windham SRC 16" with the High-Profile railed gas block, would it be better to cut down/reshape the stock gas block or just replace it with a Low-Profile block? What advantages/disadvantages are there? Sorry for the "dumb" questions but this is my 1st AR.

Just installed mine over the weekend.  13.5" on a Colt M4.  I decided to grind the A2 sight block down vs. install a low-profile gas block.

Had a small niggle during installation b/c the top rail does not align with the rail on top of the receiver 100%.  Specifically, it's just a tiny bit lower. Also, there's a small amount of wiggle room to the right and left before you tighten it up.  I wound up loosening the 2 hex screws that clamp it around the barrel nut & clamping my red dot mount at a point where the clamp hit both the diamondhead rail and the receiver rail simultaneously. Clamped it down & it aligned the rails left/right, then tightened the 2 hex screws back up. The co-witness with the red dot looks more or less right on, but imagine I might have to re-zero a bit.

All & all, install went very smoothly & can't wait to shoot it!  I think the rifle looks significantly better with the rail and that the rail fees very stiff & not overly heavy.

Couple of cell phone pics:

Cheers!
Jeff
