Digging that paint job. Details on how you did it? And what colors.

[Last Edit: markhateen] [#4]
I paint using a modified version of what Pat Rogers and many others use.

colors

Aervoe Paint: (from DSG arms)   sand  *not desert sand, just sand (FDE )
                                                    highlander (coyote)
marine corps green (almost black green)
dark green (the lighter green you see)

Krylon camo

               tan

Rustoleum camo

               khaki
               earth (dark) brown

Method:

1.) degrease gun and mask what you don't want painted. Shove an earplug in the muzzle and close the port cover. ( I remove the BCG ) I spray the gun assembled with all accessories.

2.) you want to spray when it's warm and dry (not so humid). Let the gun sit in the sun and warm up. Shake up the paint really well.

3.) Mount the gun upright if possible and spray the FDE/Khaki/Sand color. I use an old christmas tree stand and clamp the magazine. If you have a lighter color like the Krylon/Rustoleum Khaki you can actually spray the Dark earth brown first to mellow out the 2nd lighter coat. It works well getting it closer to an FDE vs the whiteish color the Rustoleum/Khaki dries to all alone. Spray 1 or two base coats of the tan or dark brown/tan combo. You are not looking for perfection, but a nice light coats without drips. It will retain it's matte finish when it dries if the coats are light.

4.) I use a camo net from the Army Navy store. Cut a large section and some smaller sections. The key is to double the net over to make unpredictable patterns. You can cut holes in a shirt, but like I said the key is doubling over your net.

After the base coats are dry I unhitch the gun from the stand and lay it down on clean cardboard. I double the net/mask over and spray the Highland (coyote.) Make sure the mask is close to the gun, same goes if you want the "snakeskin" pattern using a net of somesort. Let dry and spray the other side. Let some in the top and bottom too. You are not trying to shoot through every hole, just here and there.

5.) Repeat for Marine corps green, Dark green.

6.) Mr. Rogers blended his guns with a coat of Aervoe OD green (post WWII) but I found that step was easy to screw up and turn the whole gun "green". Proceed with caution, less is more if you choose to do the blending step.

7.) You can spray a coat of matte clear if you'd like. I've found the Aervoe paint stands up to abuse very well. Like any other paint CLP will eat away at it so try to not let pools develop when you clean your gun.

8.) Let dry as long as you can. You can shoot the gun within a few hours if you want.

9.) You can check your work vs. the surroundings you want by taking a few pictures of the gun in it's habitat. I live in the woods here SEPA.... it's typically quite green and brown most of the year so this combo works well for me. Make sure you take the pictures from various distances and you can see if you need to lighten things or darken them.

My AR (on the left) and a friend of mine's on the range yesterday (his picture). The Cheapo magnifier sucked ass, so he got rid of it once we started shooting.

That will pop up for all new posters when they try to post a pic. Its so they can stop spammers.

All paying memebers see that and vote to approve or reject the pictures to avoid another cockpockalypse or something of the sort

Thought I'd introduce myself here.

Bought this to compliment my savage 111 in .30-06.

Already ordered YHM rifle length handguard, low profile gas block, and a magpul flip up front to match the rear. Deciding on budget optics, but I really like my Nikon prostaff on my savage so may go that route in shorter magnification.

Only ting I'm not too keen on is the "clean" upper without forward assist or ejection port cover but I'll get over it (or get a stripped upper down the road)

I'll post more with the handguard installed when it comes in. For now though, some really extraordinary rifles in this thread, thanks for sharing.
