I know each country require diffrent vaccinations

might it be possible to find a list of what countries require what?

also might it be possible to find out where the malaria belts are in South Africa and other countires I hear not all of South Africa is a malaria zone.....

A good guide is the CDC. From their home page, click on travelers health and go from there.

Most of RSA and Namibia I know, are considered malaria free. I still take the pills as I don't want ANYTHING to do with malaria. We take Larium and have had no reactions, however Malarone might be a safer choice. Talk to your doctor.

By the way, public health clinics can often get you the shots cheaper than your local MD. Some folks have had them covered by their insurance also.

www.mdtravelhealth.com/ is a great site, well laid out and easy to use.

Dont confuse what a country 'requires' for what you need. They require certain things to keep you from bringing disease into their country. They dont care if you personally get sick and die.

Google and see if a Passport Health is in your area. Good one stop shot shop.

Go here to the CDC's site, pick your country of destination from the list, and it will tell you what you need. Different countries have different suggestions, such as I needed Yellow Fever in Tanzania but didn't in Zimbabwe. While most safaris are during the dry season and mosquito activity is low, malaria is still a threat and should be taken seriously. In fact, my game scout got malaria on my last hunt and fortunately for him there was plenty of malaria medicine available in camp, The locals just can't live on malaria prevention medicine (I’ve always used malarone), not to mention the fact that it isn’t cheap, and run the risk of coming down with it periodically. My PH said he has had malaria several times.

Larium will fuck you up. Use the other stuff for Malaria.

Adult Polio, Td/Tdap, MMR, Hep. A&B, Influenza and Yellow Fever to return to the U.S.

Damn, I can't remember everything I took.

I had a buddy who is a MD call one of his friends and he saw me and gave me 4 shots and Malaria pills.

He had a computer program that spit out everything I needed.

I will look tomorrow to see exactly what he gave me.

Those Malaria pills are nasty.

I've never had any specific reaction to Malarone, though for a couple of days on my first safari didn't feel my best and decided to call Malarone the culprit. I then started taking my pill each night before I went to bed, rather than hunting all day after taking it in the morning, and afterwards never felt any variety of side effect ever again.

You and me are the same, I never wanted to eat much breakfast after taking my pills and the food tasted bad, so one morning I said I would take it AFTER breakfast (because I didn't feel any effects of the pills other than breakfast) and I came to find out it was just me not being use to the slight diffrence of milk, I dont know what it is but it just doesn't taste the same

Did the malaria pills make you feel a little sea sick for a couple of hours?

No I had no side effects at all.

I took an anti-malarial, got a Hep A shot and already had the Hep B vaccination.

Don't forget to get an MD to prescribe you a good antibiotic or two in case you come down with something so you aren't stuck out in the middle of nowhere with a bad sore throat or an infected cut.

And don't forget sleeping pills!!!!!!!!!!

I also took OTC allergy meds and Benedryl, which can also make you go sleepy real good!

This is great advice as it never hurts to be prepared when you're stuck in the bush without a doc or pharmacy nearby. I've taken with me some antibiotics on both my safaris and on my last one my doc prescribed me a 750 mg packets of Levaquin, which he said would about knock out anything that came my way. I've never needed any medicines when there, but it's nice to have it in tow.
After I got home I put aside my Levaquin. About 18 months later my wife was having trouble with some sort of infection in her lungs that wouldn't respond to any treatments they had tried. They finally prescribed 750 mgs of Levaquin as I thought, "Hey, that's my safari medicine!" I pulled it out and several months of pulmonary issues were cleared up almost immediately. "Safari medicine" is a good thing to have even at home!

Lariam

If you are wondering what vivid dreams are then think color, 3-D, nightmares. Add jetlag to the mix and you really get a fun safari experience.

I got a Polio booster, hep A and B boosters, Tetanus and Diptheria, and got a prescription for Malarone. It was pricey, but is considered the best for Malaria and has few side effects. Some of those meds can really fuck you up.

Even if they SAY you aren't in a malaria zone, get the meds and take them. They've had a LOT of rain there this year and the skeeters are multiplying.
