Would you mind posting a tutorial for this?
I will definitely create a thread for a DIY bulb siphon once I get around to making it. But, it is basically fuel hose on both sides of the bulb with hose clamps on both nipples. The primer bulb is directional. The good part about it is you can go the opposite of gravity by continually squeezing the bulb. It's slow going that way but it can be done.

I apologize if this has already been covered, I read through this entire thread at one point, but didn't have the energy to read it all again today. Thanks.

I don't think that seasoning would be needed. If the can were used and had some debris then I would slosh a cup of gas around in the can to get the junk out.
Got a case [4] DO NATO gas cans 2 days ago . Filled all cans last night. One can the top wouldn't go back on. Had to drive home with that can open [ Scary ] ! Tried using the spout that I ordered from them to take most of the gas out of the can, it leaked. That was a waste of money. Finally go the lid to close by prying it with a screw driver. Now one can rocks because of the seam on the bottom of the can. Can't smell any gas coming from the cans. I guess they are well sealed. Hope I don't have any trouble with that one cap.

Picked up a 1953 Jerry can today , its in great shape! $15 from a guy at the local flea market. He has 5 more and I will be buying them too.

congratulations

Last swap meet I went to managed to snag 2 Swiss Jerry cans with spouts (one spout needs work) for $5 each.
One red, one black, with a serial #ed placard holder & little metal cards showing what was in them.
Embossed on the side:
Treibstoff 20L
Feurgefährlich
which translated by a German gal at work with means Fuel 20 liters, "fire danger" ie flammable....pretty much what I figured but any excuse to make small talk with a cute Fräulein
Also snagged an unused "pre-ban" plastic Blitz can, the type with the seperate small vent cap & pull out nozzle for $6. I had to replace one of my plastic cans with the decent self venting spout that dad lost out of the truck (empty can+truck bed+highway speed=bye bye can) so a preban can for less than a Enviro-Flo gas dribbling everywhere POS spout equipped can made my day.
Saw plenty of the smaller 2.5 & 1.25 cans with the old style self venting caps for sale also...but
every single one was missing the little yellow cap! WTF!!!! Does anybody sell just the yellow cap?

I found two of the Scepter MFC's today at a local surplus place. $30 each, and in great shape.

Hey guys. Great post. I have a couple of questions and would like to hear your advice. First since I can’t get anyone to ship MFC to me (for reasonable price, I know I’m late to the party) is it legal for a person to ship the cans from Canada to the US? Thought about having a colleague in Canada buy and ship me some, but don’t want to take a change on anyone getting in trouble if it’s not legal.
If the Scepter MFC are a no go, and you had a choice between the large mouth fuel cans from schotsmanequipment on ebay or the fuel cans from Deutsche Optik which would you choose? The can will be used to for long term gas storage with pri-g. Also do I need to buy different gaskets for the Deutsche Optik can for use with gas?

Yes as far as I know this is illegal...the may be no prosecution, but if you can't afford the time/fine...

I'd go with the DO cans there are other sources for the small mouth cans too (CTD and Swiss Army vehicles). Also there are Blitz steel cans.
Scepter is the only can that needs the Viton gasket for use with gas; the others are not so demanding.
I would not get too bothered trying to get Scepters...Yes I got some, and yes I like mine...but I think I would be just as happy with NATO cans (the small mouth DO cans), or USGI cans (Blotz steel)...as long as they don't leak or let vapor out.
PA22-400 thanks for the reply and the advice. I've been on the fence for awhile, and now seems as good as a time as any.
DSTactical.com will ship scepter spouts and any parts to the us at great prices but not mfc cans.

xhondastyle07x, I have sent you an IM
So what is the word on
THESE?
Are they good to go for fuel use? I saw they were posted in the OP, but I don't know if they are technically water cans or gas cans.
I don't really know anything about this type of stuff, so any help would be very appreciated!
Yes, Flathead. They are the real McCoy.
You can store any fuel you wish in these.
The whole "Not For Fuel" markings mean nothing.
The lining is fuel rated, and the gaskets are fuel rated.
Good luck.
Thanks rsqhobbs!

I just picked up some of those. They are just like any othere NATO Can and work very well. The lil pin to keep the lid from being opened works well when your just storing cans, but my pin has vibrated out. Ive got the can in my Gas Can Carrier on the back of my Blazer.

What kind of can is this? Was it originally meant for water? or for fuel? If it was meant for fuel, would it store gas as well as it stored diesel?
link fail, but I think I found the add.
If I found the add the the can is for water. I would not recommend buying it for multiple reasons.
A~ That can is not the best for storing gas
1~ If you want to store fuel, then the food grade liner in that can will melt into your gas.
2~ The seal on the lid will not hold gas well
3~ You are still able to buy new fuel cans from vendors listed in this thread, but you have to pay market value.
B~ That can is not the best for storing water
1~ That can may be nearly 70 years old, in 6+ decades there is much opportunity for something that you do not want to drink to have been put in that can; fuel and pesticides just to name two.
2~ For storing water go to the vendor that sells new water cans; no worries about history that way. The water can vendor is also listed in this thread.
The can in the ebay add may be collectible, but I don't think you are a collector because you are asking what the can is here.

Good to know. I just received 4 myself with a spout. I plan to fill them up tomorrow. You should check with the customer service at Deutsche Optic. I bet they'll swap the bad can for you.
Edit: added the quote

Did some more research. The clamshell top was the original WWII water can opening. I agree with your assesment completely. Why buy a collectable, but possibly non-functional, water can when I can buy a modern Scepter MWC? (found two surplus MWC at a gun show....and they even had stencilling showing they belonged to a unit I was once a member of!)
With unavailability or high price of Scepter MFCs (and the whole gasket, breaking retaining rings, and flange Achilles Heel....what were they thinking!?!!?) I have decided stick to Blitz cans. I already have two Blitz metal USMC 1943 (yep, I know that means US Metal Can company, and not Marine Corps) cans and I even have one of the 1972 donkey dicks that can be stored inside the can and seal with their own cap. I will just buy a couple more Blitz cans, even if I have to buy them without caps as the donkey dick gives me an extra cap, so to speak.
My local (SE Minnesota) Mill's Fleet Farm has 4 of these in the surplus area for $40 each. The look either new or very nicely refurbished. One of them does not close tightly due to a ding in the lid but the others are very nice.

Very poor quality cap...I looked at them here...I can see through the plastic cap because the plastic is so thin...
Not safe for transport of flammable liquid

The thin part of the cap in designed to be punched out.
Just got email for Cheaper than Dirt selling 4 NATO cans AND a spout for $99.
There's freight on that but it sort of sounds too good to be true!
