The lid has a plug and is threaded. With two abs nipples, hose, clamps, and a nipple cap, you can make a nozzle or buy the same already made. These cans have handles for easy pouring and are very thick. Red for gas, blue for water, yellow for kerosene...........

Sta-bil is garbage. Pri-G works.

walt_l, I'm going to beg to differ about both cans being fuel cans. These are military cans; not Walmart and Kmart cans. Walmart demands that the cans they sell be different from Kmart cans so that you can't get a refund for a Kmart can at Walmart, and so that you have to buy a Walmart spout for a Walmart can. The military does not play that Walmart vs Kmart drama. The military has for a long time and still does make different tops for different cans. From the beginning of the US jerry can; fuel cans and water cans have been different, and even today MFC are different from MWC.

The wide mouth can you have will probably hold fuel just fine, but I think that it was probably for some other petro-liquid like motor oil.

I think I will order a couple of those large mouth cans to use with Kerosene. I never pour that anyways and a couple bucks saved would be all the better. i just really don't know that I need any more cans. I have over a couple dozen already!

The jug is not the weak link. The little snap top cap that is for the vent is what I don't trust. Those little vent caps have been what I have observed to be the failure point of cans that have been in service.

You are probably right. All I am reporting is how they are market and what I have been sold. Other than the opening I can find NO difference between the two cans. I'll start filling them this weekend and will let you know if I experience any leaks.

I bought 6 of the wide mouth cans and currently have Kerosene in them. They don't leak and looked like New Old Stock when they arrived. There are spouts available for them on the German version of eBay. I was reading another forum and it cost over $50 for two spouts delivered via slow boat from Germany.

Can I use water cans to store fuel?

-Yes, but you really shouldn't. Water cans and marked as holding water, and are known by anyone with military service as being water cans. This can easily lead to someone dumping fuel in something you have drinking water in, or lead to someone finding a water can with water in it and dumping it into a vehicle. Yes, we should always verify, but when people get stressed mistakes get easier.

If you are using any GI water cans for water, you definitly should not be using any for fuel. Just too easy for a family member to get the two mixed up. You can mark things, but when the lights are out and you are going by feel in the dark to fuel the genset a water can feels like a water can.

Water dumped into your generator or kerosene dumped into your water filter or cooking pots would be a mess. In a SHTF situation it could be a killer.

Just spoke with a petroleum engineer friend of mine. Due to different formulations of gasoline at different times of the year, I asked him if he were going to store gasoline, which formulation would he store.

He confirmed that there are more volitiles in the winter formulation so for storage you would want "heavier" gas and he recommended "summer gas".

I picked up 6 cans locally that are Swiss Army. They were $39 new with only a few light scratches here and there. They have never had fuel in them.

Would these be any good if you purchased the gasoline gaskets?

Yes you will need the Viton gaskets for gas. They are plastic and do not take paint well; unless it is surplus and you want to clean them up....I've got a friend that has tried to clean the surplus ones up. If cosmetics is not an issue to you, then you should be satisfied.

I have a fleet of NATO cans that I purchased from D.O a couple of years ago (not the widemouth ones). Went to turn over the fuel in them and found that all the seals are badly swollen and splitting. No leakage yet but I am concerned about the seals disintegrating and contaminating the fuel.

They are all red seals, look to be rubber.

Where is the best place to find the correct, gas safe seals for these cans? I need about a dozen of em.

Also, a nozzle that doesn't suck would be cool too. Mine (new production, probably Chinese) worked great last time I used it, now it leaks like crazy.

Garand_Shooter(sp) is a member and regular poster in the SF. He runs Old Grouch's Surplus(sp). he has a 3 pack of gaskets. I would humbly suggest him

Heads up, we are out right now, and it looks like 2 weeks before we will have more. My manufacturer first had trouble gettingr ubber due to all the weather delays, then the first batch he got he sent abck because something was wrong. But he says they will be here shortly.

Curious about octane boosters. They're sold nearly everywhere, but I've never heard anyone comment on their use or effectiveness.

1) Do they work?
2) If so, is there a downside to using them?
3) Assuming they do work, would there be any issues adding them to storage gas that has been treated with Sta-bil?
4) The Gas I have is 87-88 Octane (don't remember which) with Ethanol.

FWIW I will offer an opinion on octane boosters. I don't know what benefit (if any) octane boosters will offer you for stored fuel. Generally the octane boosters are marketed as injector cleaners rather than fuel stabilizers. I would spend my money on the Sta Bil Marine with ethanol treatment and be done with it.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I do have the fuel treated with Marine Sta Bil. I trust the Sta Bil to do its job, and was more curious if the octane boosters would actually produce a significant increase in the octane rating of fuel, (stored fuel, as well as adding it to my tank). My truck needs mid grade (87-88) at a minimum. If these products do actually work as advertised, I was thinking it would be an easy way to be sure the fuel was GTG for rating. The reason I mentioned that my storage gas is treated with Sta Bil is that I'm not sure if there would be any adverse or detrimental effect in adding an octane booster to the mix.
