Anyone got a good homemade bait that would stay on a jug for at least 30min? The best is cut skipjack but I have to drive about 130 mi to catch them, then sometimes they just not acting right. All my jugs have from 2/0 to 6/0 kahle hooks, my aunt suggested something with plain flour not self rising. Have not had time to experment with it.

I always liked beef heart as bait on jugs. It stays on the hooks well and the cats loved it.
Tried beef and calf liver that was already processed and packaged, kind of "mushy" Think I will try one of the formulas w ith cotton as a filler, sounds like it may hang on for a little while. Thanks––hayboy
If you can find it give beef heart a try just cut it into strips. Its much tougher then livers, you may need to use a knife to poke a hole to get your hooks started.

yes heart is tuff! not like liver! If ya want to mess with liver get spawn sack netting and string then ty'em up. I do this for channels 4" spawn sac roll, liver with green shrimp, crawdad tails! Theres no miracal bait what works one day is for shit the next.
I do well with live chubs here on poles. also little bullheads 4-6 in. range. Blues and Flatheads.
In my youth I watched the trot line fishermen on the Mississippi River rig baits for catfish.
They had trays with small compartments (imagine really large cupcake pans, lots of small compartments) in them set up with hooks in the compartments. They would pour animal blood into the compartment that had the hooks in them and leave them out in the sun for DAYS. WHen the blood dried after a week in the sun, they would put out the lines. The blood baited hooks lasted overnite and they pulled the trot lines filled with catfish, carp and drum.
normally use gizzard shad, perch and crawdads in my part of the woods; have used hotdogs soaked in beef/pork blood for a few days, pork/beef/chicken liver, ghost minnows and chicken fat/skin with decent results too.
Anytime I use liver or anything along those lines I buy i box of those women stocking. You cut off piece and cover it like a present n tie it up or use a small rubberband to hold together. Will keep on your hook VERY well from what I've noticed.
Apple Sauce: 25 oz
Pancake syrup: 1 bottle
Flour: 2 lbs
peanut butter: 18 oz
minced garlic: 8 oz
cottonseed meal: 2 1/2 tubs (some feed stores have it)
cooking oil: 6 oz
Catfish Charlie: 1 large tub
Mix all the ingredients together and divide it up in your containers. I went ahead and rolled them all into small balls then put them in 5 containers with lids. Works good..........John
haven't realy had a lot of luck with it, tis a rookie... take trebble hook, liver, & ol pantihose, one of them plastic tub's used for the tub baits may work best, wrap small portion of panty hose around hook & tiver... op's... just noticed some one said same thing... any ways good luck fishing...
Chicken Gizzards always seem to work for me.
The fact that you can get them for next to nothing doesn't hurt either.
perch trap ––->perch/bream/bluegill/whatever
cut bait for blues/channels, live bait for yellows (opelusa/flathead/whatever you call them where you live)
Got a couple bags of fillets collected this weekend to verify that this formula still works.

I'm going to let y'all in on the secret to "jug fishing", we call it blocking where I'm from.
The easiest, most cost effective, cleanest and best bait is the simple red weenie or red skin frankfurters that you buy in a 5 lb bag. The kind that is linked together and has a slightly tougher skin than regular hot dogs.
cut them into sections about 1 1/4 in thick then thread them on the hook so the skin is pierced twice. (EXAMPLE: Bait 末末 O Hook末末J just like you are looking at the O and J here) The bait will stay on well that way.
I'll put them up against ANY bait you can buy or concoct and do just as well if not better than you will. You can keep the spare bait, lunch, and snacks all in the same cooler!
Trust me here guys, this is the truth. My Dad, Brother, and myself have all caught literally thousands of catfish with this bait on blocks (jugs).
Use these:

ETA: Even better if the brand you buy boasts more garlic!
You know those sunfish that you caught as a kid with a hook, worm and bobber? Catch a few of those, chop them up with a butcher's knife and hang the chunks on a big hook.
It's ok if the smaller fish nibble, but make sure you put a big enough chunk on the hook to last a while.
I'm a big fan of using bait from the place you're fishing. It takes a little more work, but it's worth it IMO and FREE.
I've never had luck with hearts, but maybe that's just me. They don't seem stinky/bloody enough IMO. But it's fishing. You could fish everyday (some guys do) and never try every combination of bait/tackle.
Best jug fishing I've ever done is 13 good size channel cat on November 1 at Sparrowfoot on Truman. We used plain ol' expired hot dogs.
My local bait shop sells shad caught below the dam in 1# bags, frozen. Unthaw them and put 2/3 on a hook and they work ok for the effort. A local country market sells beef liver, sliced in 1" slabs. I cut that into 1" cubes, salt them and dry them ofr a few days in the sun. Bag them, refreeze them and on fishing day put them on a good size Kahle/Circle hook and toss'em out on a jug rig. Same with the shad, hook'em & toss'em. Like all fishing-it's not called catching for a reason. I pay close attention to moon times/weather/ and all that. It works. Good luck
