I was discharged in 1980 with a significant hearing loss, but opted to just live with it. I think it was 40% in my R ear.

Now I want to see if the VA will be able to get me hearing aids since they are so expensive to buy out of pocket.

I am pretty much retired and have a VA hospital nearby, so multiple trips won't be an issue.  What is this experience going to be like?

Have you filed a claim for service connected disability?  If not, contact a service officer from one of the veterans organizations.

I strongly recommend the DAV National Service Officers.  They have done a great job assisting friends of mine, my brother, and me.
They know their stuff, stay up to date and you do not have to be a member of the DAV to receive their assistance.

The service organizations frequently maintain office hours at the VA facilities.

Are you currently receiving any services from the VA?

I also recommend having DAV help with any claims.

My situation might be different from yours. I am rated at 100% UI so all my medical (including dental) is covered 100% by the VA. I received hearing aids through the VA for hearing loss/constant ringing in my ears.

I go to the Va hospital in Columbia, Mo and the audiology department there is great. They made sure that I had the proper hearing aids and that they fit me correctly.
