For you guys who have been out for a while ..... Do you ever dream that you are back in the Army?

A few times a year I dream that I'm wondering around either Basic Training or OCS as a gray haired 66 year old guy in uniform and no one thinks that it is odd.

Nothing exciting happens but I wonder why I'm there.

For reference I left active duty in 1970.

Yes, but not for many years.

I don't remember then very well, but I think they involved my job, rather than basic, or any other such.

They weren't terribly clear, but what was clear was that I was (back) in the Army.

Separated from active duty in Jan 1960. (do I qualify as "been out for a while"?)

Got out of the Marine Corps in 1995.  I still occasionally dream I am back in.  Usually, it is right before I go out.  I guess it is some sort of regret issue.

After I ETS'd in 1986 I was glad to be done with it. Shortly thereafter and ever since I'm sorry I got out.  Doubly so on and after 9-11

I separated in 1971, and yes I do sometimes have dreams that I'm back in the Army.

I got out in 2012 and I still have those dreams a lot. I often dream that I'm in Iraq again.

Ever have a dream where you did something awful and life-ending, like murder? Then you wake up with the biggest sense of relief ever? That's what it's like for me. I appreciate breathing air that's got humidity and no dust. I'll laugh in the shower because I'm alone and it's got all the hot water I could want. I wake up my child and freak her out because I squeeze her and tell her all serious that I love her and I'm glad I can be here with her now. I delight in starting my truck and marveling at how quiet its gas engine is, how fast it goes, and how I'm free to go anywhere I want.

I wake up from those dreams feeling like I've got a new lease on life. I feel more alive, and all my present day problems seem like no problem at all.

I got out of the Marine Corps in 1989.
From 2004-2012 I was dreaming that I was in the Army National Guard doing 2 tours in Iraq.

Saturday morning before last, I dreamed I was sitting on the bleachers @ the Zero range @ Fort Hood, in a pouring rain, @ 0400.  Then I woke up.  I'm 45 years old, sitting on the bleachers....

I retired from the Coast Guard in 98 after almost 25 years.  I still often have dreams of being back at sea.  Standing a mid-watch on the bridge and approaching boarding vessels in the small boat.

Last night, I dreamed I was passing radio traffic on a Motor Vessel and was pissed because of the VHF static and transmissions not being received.

I got out in 2010 and I dream about being back in Iraq occasionally.

Most of the time I'm dreaming of a rocket or mortar attack and I can't run fast enough to get away.

I also have another dream about a village we visited and seeing something I wish I could unsee.

I get at least a dream every 2 months of being back in. Sometimes it's training-type dreams, others actual combat and others still at a working unit.

I used to have them all the time but, not so much anymore. But, there's still a tinge of lingering regret that I didn't make active a career...

Navy, but yeah.  Usually its dreams of answering the phone in the middle of the night about some piece of gear that's crapped out.

I have a dream like that once a month.  It's always on a Friday night and it starts with "fuck, I have to go to drill in a few hours..."

Only a couple more years until I hit 20.

My father said he had only one type of recurring nightmare, that he was in the army and they wouldn't let  him out. I understand that nightmare.

When I have dreams that I am back in the Army I am the age I am now, and like the poster said above, it sure is a relief to wake up and it all was a dream.

Out since 2012
Recently had a couple of dreams where I was recalled back into service out of retirement.
Not sure what would have prompted the dream.

The only nightmare I ever get is that I can't find my damn cover.
