A friend told me he heard that paratroopers prefer jumping from a C-130 vs a C-17.
Can you guys tell me why the C-17 isn't liked for personnel drops? |

The addition of the platform is what I remember being the cure for the problem. Thanks, guys.
I remember that early in the program there was a problem where the jumpers going out the left and right doors would collide behind the airplane, but that was all I'd heard and that's been corrected. |

Has he ever jumped a C-17 or compared loading a C-17 versus getting stuffed in a C-141 or C-130? C-130s are easier to jumpmaster though as you don't have to trace the bottom of the door. Quoted:

View Quote That was a problem during testing almost 20 years ago. It was one of the reasons for the longer static lines. The white 20' static lines and then the 5' foot extension to the USL or USL-M. High altitude entanglements are always a possibility from any aircraft. |

One of my former GySgt told me when he was with 2nd ANGLICO they were basically TAD to Bragg for months testing the concept There really isn't a platform with the C-17. It is just integrated into the aircraft and is the thickness of the "wall". Now that fancy handle on the lead edge of the door took some development and money. |

The C-17 was the first US cargo aircraft designed for paratroop drops that had troops from the 82nd, Airborne Board, and the Military Free Fall School all involved from the beginning as they worked up mock-ups and layouts of the seats, lighting, on-board oxygen systems, and jump doors (to include jumpmaster spotting around the landing gear sponsons).
The C-130 has NOTHING on a C-17 (except maybe big picture cost). A paratrooper who would rather jump a 130 over a 17 isn't mentally right in the head. |

We're loaded and the JM are walking on top of everybody's rucksacks and stuff. We were so crowded the Black Hats had no problem walking on our equipment with minimal problems. We were so tightly packed we could barely move! Never had that problem with the C-130. But then we were never crowded as we were in Jump School. |

My first 5 jumps at Fryar were from a C-141, and they fucking hurt. They hurt because stall speed on the 141 was so high that we had to jump at an unsafe speed. My first C-130 jump was at RIP, and it was so pleasurable that were really enjoyed it. The 130 is a great platform to jump from, the 141 was a bitch. I would liked to have had the opportunity to jump from a C-17. |

View Quote I was a rigger who got to work at the ACE Board a few tours. We packed and loaded 250 lb dummies and dropped them all the time. They had some kind of sensor on them measuring the shock of the opening and the impact from other dummies under the plane. That was right before the static line extension solution. That was in 96-97 time frame. |

Fuck that, 130's suck dick.
Order of preference 47 > C17 > C130 If I could do a 47 every jump I would. Hold your static line upside down, walk off the ramp and pencil dive straight down. No going ass over teakettle, no twisted risers, nothing. |

I always had better exits from a c130, although you were cramped as shit in there and no ac was a bitch.
c17 had air conditioning which was a godsend, and you could actually stretch out before your jump, but the sticks were always longer, as they put alot more jumpers in the sky personally I didn't really care either way, unless it was the middle of august. |
