Question: My wife is looking for her grandfathers service record from WWII. We know he was a quartermaster on the USS Westmoreland. He enlisted the D-day +1 in the USN. We want to figure out his rank, official service dates, and any other information we can. Goggle isn't helping much. He was a sociology teacher and has a number of books that pop up. I figured this might be a good place to check.

Best bet would be to have his next of kin request his service records via an SF-180 form. The directions are included with the form; follow them to the letter regarding requesting records for deceased service members and the correct location to send the form.
