Just a random thought, has anyone else noticed the disappearance of the pay phone? I guess it's a product of the Cell Phone age, but pay phones seem to be an endangered species now. It used to be that I saw them so often I took them for granted, they were ubiquitous, there was one on practically every corner, outside every bar and most stores, they were everywhere, now they are nowhere to be found if one actually looks. I haven't needed one for a couple of years, but I remember at the time I just assumed I would find one, but it literally took me hours of searching to find one, now I notice and like to play "spot the payphone." When I see one it is usually just an empty "kiosk," the little stand with the phone graphic on the side, or a place where one clearly one was, but the phone is now missing, and when I do see a public phone it is more often just a free "courtesy" phone. Think, when was the last time you saw one? Listening to some old music and I guess I was feeling nostalgic.

I saw one a few weeks ago and was like damn, haven't seen one of those in a while.

Little hole in the wall Mexican market that I stop at for lunch on occasion has 3 pay phones.
Used to be in use every time I went in there (illegals calling back home via calling cards). Now even they have cell phones, I seldom see the pay phones in use anymore. |
|
just before I forgot everyone's actual number due to sim card memory.

A neighboring town had an operational pay phone booth up until 2 years ago. Just for the fun of it, I made a call from it a few years back. Glad I did, because I don't think I'll ever get the opportunity to do that again in my lifetime. Dropping coins....it's likely the last time I'll ever do it. Pretty cool, really.

The last time I saw a pay phone was at Disney World.
The time before that was at the airport. Pay phones have become an endangered species since nearly everyone has a cell phone and most cell phones are unlimited usage. |

In the case of at least one, the second phone was replaced by an AED. Before that, a few months ago in Bisbee, AZ. |

Payphones cost money to keep working and repair.
If there isn't profit to be made....... |

There are a few places where landlines are the only lines.
I blew a tire near Hat Creek, CA 1-2 years ago and I had to use a payphone to call for help. Jordan Valley, OR has no cell service. No cell service for me in Benton, CA. These are a few places that I frequently pass through. |
|
There's one at the Marathon station in town so, once or twice a week. Haven't seen anyone use it.

July of last year.
In a little town in Washington that should have cell service because it sits in a giant valley, but doesn't. I had to use that pay phone, and figured out in about five seconds why cell phones were invented, because it was a huge pain in the ass |

A couple years back, I visited Kitt Peak Observatory, where cell phones are not allowed, and they had a pay phone.
Services There are no services found on Kitt Peak. The closest gas can be obtained at the Coyote Store 16 miles from the summit on state route 86. A pay phone, public restroom, and number of water fountains are located on the summit. Cell Phones The use of cell phones on the mountain top is prohibited. Cell phones interfere with the two radio telescopes found on Kitt Peak http://www.noao.edu/outreach/kpvc/plan_trip.html |

Saw several in S. Africa earlier this month. Saw a couple on Century Blvd. in Los Angeles July '13

Today. Didn't check to see if it was still operational, though. Many (but not all) of the existing payphones around here are out of service. It is unfortunate, because sometimes one does find themselves in a situation where they would be most helpful. I just experienced such a thing recently. I was very fortunate that I was able to find an alternative.

Lat year I saw one in the town of Peekskill in NY outside of a Market. Sad part was I really needed to use it as the cell was dead.
Of course it was broken |

I see one almost everyday. Stewarts shops, upstate NY thing.

Every morning at a local stop and rob when I stop to get my morning Dr. Pepper.

There is one at the local gas station, dont know if it works or not

While there was once great need ,There is little need for payphones in our society anymore. We live in salad days of communication.

There's one by the nearest Convenience Store.
You never know when your Smart Phone's battery will die on you. |
|
I was in Wisconsin Dells back in August and saw one. Everyone got excited lol.

I work the ghetto. There are still a few of them left around, usually in front of a convenience store. People like to call 911, and then leave them off of the hook. Obviously, they need more free stuff to occupy their time.

Every time I visit my eldest step son in jail.
When I married his mom, he was out of the picture and living on his own. Now he lives on the tax payer dime. At least for the next six months.

Quoted: There's several in the courthouse I work in. View Quote In the Federal Courthouse I go to cell phones are not allowed in the building (with exceptions for jurors and lawyers). While the pay phones are long gone, there is a free land line phone mounted on the wall near the bathrooms on each floor. |

I can't remember. Ok, just remembered. I saw a few at the airport last week.
|
|
I see them on TV all the time.
In real life, not so much. I think I did see some on an episode of COPS--so maybe there are some around in the hood. |

I voted once a month because that's about how often I'm in the NRQZ. I'm on the edge of cell phone service at my place. Head towards Green Bank and pay phones reappear at crossroads, gas stations, ect. |

At an airport.
Flight heavily delayed, cell died, made a call. |
