in reality, the V10s were the absolutely most remarkable engines built in F1. nearly 1000hp from an N/A 3.0L. simply amazing. that engine with todays aero would be insanity and far too dangerous. F1 is not an innovative series. it just isnt. innovation requires more than a regulating body saying "youre going to do this and like it." the biggest reason is simply that the rule book is a messy conglomeration of statutes over 50 years of political wrangling. it basically needs to be thrown out and a SIMPLE set of rules put in its place. 1) driver drives the car, not the computer. (things like semi-active suspension or 'computer controlled reactive suspension' would be allowed in my F1) 2) a fuel limit per race of 125 kg will be put into place. your team will be rewarded in some way not in points for each liter saved. or.. refueling returns with a mandated fuel tank size. the team with teh least amount of refueling stops will get 2 points towards the manufacturer's championship. if you go slower than the previous years race pace, no 2 points for you. no diesel, no ethanol. you get high octane 'pump' gas no more than 116 octane 3) heres a box that the car has to be with in and here are the safety rules. have fun. DRS will be staying. however.. it is up to you to figure out what works best for your car. semi-active aero is allowed as well. no steer by wire. 4) ERS will be full season dev as will the engines provided cylinder deactivation is included. and 5) you get a 33% spending cap per year. 33% refers to the amount of net revenue the F1 series makes the previous season. so make it exciting. I like some of your rule ideas, except DRS. I agree with Lauda, the FIA shouldn't decide when a driver makes a pass. Not really. Drivers shouldn't have an easy button to pass like they do now. Instead of trying to set up a pass they just wait for the DRS zone (hence the FIA deciding when they make a pass). A lot of people were complaining that there wasn't enough passing in F1, so the FIA starts this DRS bullshit. Now we have a lot of passing, but it's all bogus. You don't get to see those ballsy pass attempts like Hakkinen using Zonta to pass Schumacher at Spa. You still see some great passes, but most drivers just wait till the DRS zone to make it easy. With the new regulations the FIA has a great opportunity to give the drivers some of the tools for passing they had in the 80's. Namely turning up the fuel a bit to pass someone, but doing that too many times means they have to worry about running out of fuel. They drivers would be able to decide when to pass. I'd rather see even more reductions on aero than DRS. Giving the drivers an "easy button" to make a pass just cheapens everything about the race. The FIA has already reduced rear downforce to allow cars to follow much closer in the corners. |

Christian Horner reveals why Red Bull 'are extremely confident' of winning appealCase based on regulations not stating FIA sensor must be usedView Quote "We are appealing on the grounds that we do not believe, we are extremely confident, that we have not broken the rules, that we haven't exceeded the 100kg/h of fuel that is permitted to be utilised by the car and the engine," Horner told Sky Sports News' Rachel Brookes. "So that was the reason for our appeal, we feel we have a strong case and it will be down to the appeal court to ultimately decide." The World Champions argument centres on the wording of the FIA's Technical Regulations with Article 5.1.4 stating "Fuel mass flow must not exceed 100kg/h". However, as it does not say that this reading has to come from the FIA's sensor Red Bull feel they can use their own measurements to prove they did not breach the regulations. "Our whole case is on the fact of which reading is correct," the Team Principal added. http://www1.skysports.com/f1/news/24239/9231815/christian-horner-reveals-why-red-bull-are-extremely-confident-of-winning-appeal |

Sounds kinda like appealing your speeding ticket because the speedometer in your car only read 35.
The fuel flow rule is bullshit, but RB was warned several times about using the approved sensor, and ignored the warning (on Riccardo's car anyway). I got zero sympathy. And now they're to threatening to build their own engines... http://grandprix247.com/2014/03/26/mateschitz-the-alternative-to-renault-power-is-to-make-an-engine-ourselves/ |

View Quote I'm in that video... Left front as the car comes to a stop. I used to do the wheel gun on that side. I remember Boutsen hitting his crew member as they were next to us. The entry to pit lane is uphill and crests just before the pit boxes themselves. Thierry was carrying too much speed over the hump and couldn't turn in as his steering went light. The guy he hit was actually done in by the fact that he had seen him coming too fast and had moved further out into the blend lane to avoid getting hit... He was a Welsh rugby player so he just shook it off and kept going. |

The little turbo V6 is freakin' amazing. (Well, Merc's is anyway ) If they'd get rid of the stupid rev limit it would probably sound pretty decent and produce insane power.
The teams seem to be doing the same thing the passenger cars makers are doing: taking the ridiculous regulations and building incredible stuff in spite of them. It likens itself to one of my political theories. The kinds of people who make "things" for a living are always smarter than the people who make "rules" for a living. Heartwarming really. |

I certainly wouldn't be able to state that if I was trying to warm-up to the sport right now. scientifically speaking, the exhaust pulses come out of an engine and are manipulated to scavenge more exhaust and bring in more air/fuel. all of this creates a certain chorus that we all love. when you add a turbo or 2 turbos, you mix all those pulses together and end up with more of a whoosh. a quiet whoosh. turbos are also effective mufflers as you can tell. |

I have become desensitized by the things I have been around for the past decade or so, I personally didn't think it detracted from my enjoyment of the event. Having said that, I miss the screamers. My boat measured 115 dB at idle from the drivers seat but it is a 510 inch, TT, 1300HP, nitrous injected big block so I forgive the fact that it doesn't rev to 15k. Quoted:

Unfortunately, it isn't that simple, the whole engine is designed around the regulations that include a ceiling on RPM therefore the base architecture isn't capable of having the rev limit increased by any significant amount. Rev limits are ultimately determined by the valve train/geometry but the rest of the engine also has to support it. |

With the Toyota, Audi, and Porsche all released, do you have any opinion on the P1's for WEC/Le Mans for this year? Well, It's not a case of picking between the two as my primary focus is the sportscar side of our business. I have worked with open wheel cars for the vast majority of my career but I was brought in to provide support to the other side. Now that the Indycar season is upon us I have been asked to assist for the first six events on top of my prior commitments. Having competed in P1 at the "privateer" level relatively recently I know that the game has changed radically. Just a few years ago we were able to compete with the factory and factory supported teams one on one but no more. Honda have no interest in throwing boat loads of money to do what Audi/Porsche/Toyota do. We are more of a customer focused company, even in F1 we have come back as an engine supplier rather than a full manufacturer. I think that the technology in the current P1 cars is great, very, very interesting from an engineering perspective, just as it was when F1 allowed all kinds of innovative ideas. We did a design study on a customer P1 car and even that was prohibitively expensive and beyond the reach of even an exceptionally well funded privateer team. We were very well advanced with the engine side of things which incorporated multiple hybrid technologies and will continue to develop that as a potential asset to anything the future throws our way. Quoted:

For giggles, I created a spreadsheet to predict the top 10 finishing positions. I based the predictions on last year's team and driver Malaysia results and this year's Australia race results. I'm no statistician, so it's fairly simplistic and can be very easily skewed based on a DNF by a top team/driver. It should be more accurate as the season goes on and more results are added to the equation. I thought it would be kind of fun to try my hand at using stats to predict results. We'll see how it goes.
