Sorry to perpetuate the hijack, but is that true? I've long wondered and generally spell them out just because I think it looks wrong. Didn't know what the standard was/is, however

I hope I don't get in trouble for this one

I've actually heard some use one hundred as the marker for spelling out numbers.  Essentially, it falls to literary license.  Spelling them out tends to be more "professional", but even that isn't true at times.

as explained to me by several professors who are very active in the literature, if a number can be related in one word (seven), a hyphenate (twenty-seven), or two words (one hundred), then it should be spelled out.  otherwise it should be rendered in numerals.

however, if numbers are being used in such a way as to invoke a mathematical point, they should be consistently rendered in numerals.

thus...

"I was one of the seven researchers invited to examine the collection of 235 manuscripts."

or

"In 6 out of the 26 events, the subject exhibited such-and-so."

basically, the point is to make it easier for the reader if math is involved.  if you don't have to worry about style-guide accuracy, this policy will serve you well.
