We used Empire for our wood floors, and recarpeting 4 bedrooms and 1 walk in closet, as well as laying ceramic tile in our guest bathroom.  Total price I believe was just over $6000.  We have a huge living room/entry, and used most of their top line product, and it's held up amazingly.  The thing I liked, and that I find well worth the cost, was all of that work was done in about 14 hours, one work day.  A crew of about 10 guys showed up, started ripping linoleum up and carped up, moved all furniture, the works.  Everyone I've talked about said Empire did them right.  I know I could have saved money by doing it myself, but both my wife and I work about 60-70 hours a week, and have 3 boys, and 3 dogs in the house, and would take us much longer to do the job.  I think we paid out the ass to get it done in one day.

As for the product, both have extensive warranties, I know I've dropped several things on the floor, and no dents or scrapes.  The carpet was pretty cheap compared to other places we looked, the wood flooring and tile were quite a bit more.

I had great luck with Home Depot over the years.  The prices are very reasonable compared to a carpet store and they have whole house install specials for $29.  All good name brand carpets.  It does take a while as first you have an appt with a measurer, then they order, and your carpet can take a couple weeks to get in.

One of my coworkers had an issue with Empire as the carpet came off 2 different rolls so one side of their living room was a slightly different shade than the other.  It took over a month for Empire to finally replace.  Even though it was easily visible, they made my coworker wait until some sort of color specialist could come out and verify the difference.

empire is pretty pushy and hard sellers.
If you don't like what they brought with them as samples too bad.
If you don't buy today, you are wasting their time.

we checked them 2 times for 2 differnt jobs for carpet and both times when we asked to think about it they became rude. won't bother with them the next time.

But they place in about the middle of the pack price wise from what I could tell. maybe a little higher.

the issue with carpet is how to compare apples to apples. they make it hard on purpose.

we have used carpet one, which did a good job I think. We went with a very pricey carpet thinking we would never move.

this last time we use a local carpet place and probably would not use them again. although the price was fine, they were not very professional in my opinion. they even ran out of carpet at one point and had to come back.

a co worker found another carpet place we used. honestly don't know the name of the place. had them put in carpet we got from somewhere else.
they were very good and professional.
can pm you the phone number if you are interested. they appear to sell as well, but at the time we already had some carpet we needed put in. next time I will go with them from the get go. very inexpensive for the amount of work that was done.

I used to sell flooring for Lowe's and Empire was always the easiest to beat. They are extremely overpriced and their sales people are commission only, as are most sales people you will talk to in the independent flooring stores. Home Depot or Lowe's is going to be your best option typically because nobody else can match their price for the quality of product you get.

If you're looking at carpet, find a nylon with a high density/face weight, something in the 45oz/3000 range or greater. Stainmaster is a good product as well, we had that at Lowe's, I believe Home Depot has a comparable offering by a different name. The only drawback to Home Depot/Lowe's is the lead time if you choose a special order carpet. It will have to be shipped from the mill in Georgia and that typically takes 10-14 days, although there are exceptions. The other advantage of going through the bigger stores is that if there is a problem, there is a permanent store that is not going anywhere that you can go to and bitch if you have to in order to correct a problem. The independent stores have been known to not answer the phone or otherwise generally be unavailable if there is an issue with a seam or dye lot, etc.

That's my $.02 after almost a decade in the industry, hope it helps, if you have any further questions send me a PM and we can discuss the really interesting world of carpet

I just had wood floors done in Frisco by JH family floors and they did a great job and will be having them back later this year for carpet.  If you are N. Dallas area i would definitely give John a call.

I'll have to second Lowes. They carpeted a master closet for us and the price was very reasonable and the installation quick and professional.
