The employer parking lot bill (text here:
http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/82R/billtext/html/HB00681I.htm) needs your help to get out of committee.
This bill will ensure employers do not discriminate (or fire, or threaten to fire) an employee because of lawfully possessed firearms locked in personal vehicles. Note: You do not have to have a CHL, if you are legal to carry a firearm in your car (a la motorist protection act), you are protected. The TX Senate passed this bill in 2009, and just had the first hearing on the companion legislation (SB321) today.
We need to get this bill out of committee before the TX house starts working on redistricting and the heavy lifting on the budget. The bill has 86/150 members of the TX house in support of it, so if it can get to the house floor it should pass the house.
Please help call and fax the members of the Business and Industry committee tomorrow (Wed 3/2/11) or Thurs 3/3/11. The bill has already had testimony taken in a public hearing, and must be voted on in order to be sent to the Calendar's committee(which decides when bills are voted on by full house).
Please call and fax the Reps below. The conversation is very easy (example below). You should be able to call all 9 in under 15 minutes.
Hi, I'm calling in support of HB 681 which was heard in the Business and Industry committee on Monday February 28. Please vote out this bill favorably, as filed, with no amendments. <-this is very important, as amendments will gut the bill's effectiveness.
They may or may not even ask your name. Most staffers will say some version of "thank you", "I'll pass the message along" or tell you the Rep is in support of the bill and is working for the same goal. It should take less than 15 minutes.
House process:
introduced ->Committee -> Calendar's committee-> full house vote -> meet/reconcile with Senate version -> Gov signature (this is why we re-elected Perry!)
