The company I work for is having a recently aquired 30 story building imploded in downtown FTW this Saturday, March 18th.  It supposed to go off around 0700-0800.  From what I've heard, it will be the record for the tallest structure imploded in such a confined area (by 5 feet).  Should be interesting.  How often to you get to see something like that?  Bring the kids!

Which building is being razed?

I think it was called The Texas Building.  Actually, they filmed a bank robbery scene for Walker, Texas Ranger there.  So maybe it's just actually an after effect of one of Chuck's round houses!

It faces Houston St, between 6th and 7th Streets.

ETA
The fake bank sign they put up for filming, along with lettering on the windows, was still there until they busted it out in preparation a month or so ago.

That be it.

ETA
I'll be in the building in the bottom right corner.  The command post, the next closest occupied area, will be off the screen in the same direction at the Fed building.

That's post-tornado looks like.   Broken windows on the tower, but not yet boarded up.  Also, the old bus terminal attached to our main building has been gone for a year or two now.  Cool to see all the changes.

A little more info, the parking lot that the arrow runs across has been dug out to about a depth or 30-40 feet, with the extracted material creating a berm surrounding the pit.

The explosives will begin towards the top, beginning the collapse.  Explosives will then go off at the base on one side, then immediately afterwards on the the other, causing the building to collapse first in the opposite direction that the arrow is pointing, and then down upon itself into the pit.

After collapse, the rubble is expected to be 6 stories tall and take 3 months to clear out.  The man in charge of this whole operation in a meeting last week told us that he doesn't expect anything to even hit the street, outside of dust.  They have wrapped the building in chicken wire from the top down to about the 6th floor, and chain link fence from about 4 down.  the last 4 floors or so are completely gutted.

It has been quite interesting to watch the progression.

Hmmm, I just might have to drag the kid to go see this!  Any suggestions for a good view?

They probably keep the airspace cleared, but it would be beyond cool to see a video made from the air, preferably looking straight down. That darn dust cloud!

I have heard they are suppose to close a 9 block area around the building.

I work near the convention center on Houston St.  How are folks suppose to get to work on Saturday?  I am off...just have some around here asking.

Thx

Is there any official word on what will be off-limits and best places to view this?

I'm hoping to get the kids over there to see this.

Someone needs to get video of this event!

I plan on taking my vid and digital camera.  Not sure where the best place to view would be.  I'm sure there will be multiple places at different angles, just not sure exactly where they might be.  I'm sure the earlier you can get out there the better.
Here's a kinda cheesy animation the Star Telegram made.

Too bad you couldn't squeeze in a little CQB fun with the building prior to demolition.  At least paintball or something

I'm sure there will be lots of video available.  It'll probably be on the national news and all.

Anyone get video of this? I wanted to get up there but I had to work this weekend and couldn't make the drive from Austin.

The sound and concussion of the explosions was pretty cool.  Lots of busted out windows in the surrounding buildings.  Lots of debris, but not too much considering what they did.  I just left about 45 mins ago and they were starting to make a dent on getting the streets and our parking lot cleared.  I'll post pics once I get them downloaded from my camera.

NICE... That would have been something to see.  Wish I could have gone up there to check it out.  Not many people get to say they saw a building imploded in person!
