Policewoman Targeted For Car-Jacking Kills 1 Man, Wounds Another
by Bob Dunn, Feb 1, 10:48 am
In a split-second move that may have saved her life, off-duty Richmond Police Officer Holly Mong shot two armed men who muscled their way into her car, killing one and seriously wounding the other.
Mong left her Jersey Village apartment, in northwest Harris County, early Tuesday morning on her way to a training class at the Richmond Police Department, where she’d begun working just six months ago, Richmond Police Chief Bill Whitworth said.
According to a Jersey Village Police Department report, Whitworth was getting into her car in the apartment complex parking lot when an armed man appeared.
The man, who was wearing gloves and a mask, “told her to move over, while holding a gun to her head,” Whitworth said. She was ordered to unlock the car door, and a second man climbed into the back seat behind her.
“While they were settling in, she reached into her purse,” pulled out a pistol, “and shot both of them,” Whitworth said. The man in the back seat was killed, and the man behind the steering wheel was seriously injured with a head wound.
Whitworth called Mong’s actions “gutsy,” noting, “A lot of people would not have done that.”
Whitworth said the wounded suspect was sent by life-flight to a hospital, where doctors performed brain surgery. As of Wednesday morning, he still was alive.
Police discovered a third suspect in another vehicle, who apparently was prepared to follow the other suspects in Mong’s car, Whitworth said.
It’s unclear whether the men were attempting to steal Mong’s car or were attempting a kidnapping. Jersey Village Police would not comment on details of the case. Police did say that the Texas Rangers and Harris County District Attorney are helping with an investigation of the incident.
Police also have not released identities of the three suspects or provided information on charges pending against them. A spokesman said they were trying to identify the men via fingerprints.
It’s rare for a Richmond police officer to have to use deadly force. Whitworth said the last time it happened was six years ago.
Whitworth said his department has given Mong a few days off “to decompress.” He also said she would see a police psychologist to discuss the incident, which is routine procedure, to “help decide what’s the best way to proceed from here.”
Considering the circumstances, Mong is doing fine, Whitworth said, adding “We’re very proud of her.”
