Policewoman Targeted For Car-Jacking Kills 1 Man, Wounds Another
by Bob Dunn, Feb 1, 10:48 am

In a split-second move that may have saved her life, off-duty Richmond Police Officer Holly Mong shot two armed men who muscled their way into her car, killing one and seriously wounding the other.

Mong left her Jersey Village apartment, in northwest Harris County, early Tuesday morning on her way to a training class at the Richmond Police Department, where she’d begun working just six months ago, Richmond Police Chief Bill Whitworth said.

According to a Jersey Village Police Department report, Whitworth was getting into her car in the apartment complex parking lot when an armed man appeared.

The man, who was wearing gloves and a mask, “told her to move over, while holding a gun to her head,” Whitworth said. She was ordered to unlock the car door, and a second man climbed into the back seat behind her.

“While they were settling in, she reached into her purse,” pulled out a pistol, “and shot both of them,” Whitworth said. The man in the back seat was killed, and the man behind the steering wheel was seriously injured with a head wound.

Whitworth called Mong’s actions “gutsy,” noting, “A lot of people would not have done that.”

Whitworth said the wounded suspect was sent by life-flight to a hospital, where doctors performed brain surgery. As of Wednesday morning, he still was alive.

Police discovered a third suspect in another vehicle, who apparently was prepared to follow the other suspects in Mong’s car, Whitworth said.

It’s unclear whether the men were attempting to steal Mong’s car or were attempting a kidnapping. Jersey Village Police would not comment on details of the case. Police did say that the Texas Rangers and Harris County District Attorney are helping with an investigation of the incident.

Police also have not released identities of the three suspects or provided information on charges pending against them. A spokesman said they were trying to identify the men via fingerprints.

It’s rare for a Richmond police officer to have to use deadly force. Whitworth said the last time it happened was six years ago.

Whitworth said his department has given Mong a few days off “to decompress.” He also said she would see a police psychologist to discuss the incident, which is routine procedure, to “help decide what’s the best way to proceed from here.”

Considering the circumstances, Mong is doing fine, Whitworth said, adding “We’re very proud of her.”

GG Holly...
I hope she doesn't lose one night of sleep over this piece of crap.
Unknown to her she saved some other women’s (or some guys) life by going out to her car when she did...
Chances are the other person would not have been able to do anything and would have ended up just another robbery/rape/theft/homicide victim.

Outstanding job Holly!

Doesn't matter LT, she's in Texas. You'd never have a chance.

Glad the officer was able to handle the situation.  Too bad the head shot was not fatal.

Hopefully her situation awareness is on red next time so it won't happen again.

Just what exactly does that mean?

It means that situation awareness (early AM, a walk to your car either at apartment complex or parking lot at the mall, etc....) is an important factor to avoid event like this.  You're a LEO, so I assume you know situation awareness factor.  Now she might or might not, I don't know.  My statement is definitely NOT to bash her because she did us all a favor to waste the bad guys and in turn prevent pontential innocent victims by these guys.

I think everyone here knows what situational awareness is.

Forgive me, if I'm mistaken, for taking it this way but I took your comment to mean that she for sure wasn't paying attention and that you would always have noticed the bad guys coming up yourself.

Realistically, there is know way we can 100% of the time notice everything.

P.S.  After today I'm no longer LEO for 6 months...I'm just a puke cadet!  The boots are going to get dusty for a while.

No harm done, jadams951.  And you're correct about not 100% situ. awareness....But when reading this article, I try imagine what can I do to prevent it from happening because it can happen to me.  She's obviously very gutsy and calm than me for sure--in the same situation.
Now explain why you're no longer LEO and just a 'puke cadet'?

Cause I'm leaving Harris County and going to work for another local agency where I can really do some violating and I have to go through their basic academy even though I've already been there and done that.

Is it a step up or down...?

What local agency?  Or is it a 'If I tell, I have to kill you.' stuff ?

It's a major step up and even though I'll lose some pay at first it won't be long and I'll be making more than if I stayed with the county.
