We are going to have a day of long range fun on the KD range at Tiger Valley!  This will be an excellent opportunity for novice and expert alike.

Everyone is welcome to join us.  Just IM/email me if you want more details!

Date:  SUNDAY, April 23rd is the date.

I know we had several people pick Saturday, but I was contacted by more people who could *only* make a Sunday shoot.  If the shoot on Sunday only cuts you out... I do sincerely apologize.  It is hard to include everyone.

Price:  It is going to be $25 a person.  This will cover use of the 1000 yd range, and T.V. supplied targets and target supplies for the day.  I have already paid the $300 range rental reservation fee.  The first 12 shooters have now fully prepaid and we are covered.  All remaining shooters who would like to join, just show up and pay Tiger Valley on the morning of the shoot.  We don't really have a limit set on number of shooters, but will probably cap it around 20-25.  Post in this thread if you plan on showing up so we will know how many to expect.

If you prepaid me, and for some reason need to back out - you can get a full refund as long as we have 12 shooters to cover the cost of the range rental.

Details:

Tiger Valley details are at www.tigervalley.com/  Tiger Valley is about 15 miles northeast of Waco, TX.  This is an excellent 1000yd KD range with manicured berms, and targets behind a wall/berm.

This will be a full day, of shooting from a possible 200, 300, 500, 600, 800, 900, and 1000 yds.  We might have to cut out some of those distance due to time constraints... we can discuss up to and on the day of the shoot.

Tenative schedule:

7:45am - check-in/sign-in/briefing  DONT BE LATE
08:30-09:00 - Team 1 - 300yds
pit swap
09:15-09:45 - Team 2 - 300yds
10:00-10:30 - Team 2 - 600yds
pit swap
10:45-11:15 - Team 1 - 600yds
11:30-12:00 - Team 1 - 800yds
Lunch - pit swap
1:00-1:30 - Team 2 - 800yds
1:45-2:15 - Team 2 - 1000yds
pit swap
2:30-3:00 - Team 1 - 1000yds
3:15-3:45 - Team 1 - 900yds
pit swap
4:00-4:30 - Team 2 - 900yds
4:45-5:15 - Team 2 (time permitting) 500yds (steel?)
pit swap?
5:30-6:00 - Team 1 (time permitting) 500yds (steel?)

This will be paper targets ONLY, into large circular black targets on stands.  These targets are fun, because someone pulls your target down, marks it with a visible marker, scores the hit, and puts it back up between each shot.  You get instant feedback on how you are doing.  No steel.  We will be shooting on the KD rifle range only, no pistol.  Now... some shooters have mentioned they would like to shoot some steel... so we will really just have to see how many.  We cant have people behind the berm pulling targets at the same time steel is up and being hit, because of ricochet and fast moving splatter.  If we have time, or if you guys want to cut out some of the distances, we might could save a bit of time to knock steel plates around.... possibly during a lunchbreak for those who want to do that?

Half of us will be pulling/marking targets, and half will be shooting.  If we have 12 shooters, this would mean 6 shooters on the 300yd line, with 6 people pulling and marking their targets.  Then switch off for each distance, then move back.  We will each spend HALF of the day behind the berm, pulling targets.  Keep that in mind.

If we did 30 minutes per shooting session, plus 15 minutes for team changes/moves, that would be 1:30 per distance, or about a 10.5 hour shooting day.  If we got there at 8am SHARP, shooting started at 8:30am, we would not finish the course until 7pm ... which will be a bit dark for 1000yds I think.  So we will either have to cut out some distances, or make the shooting time shorter.  30 minutes of shooting on the line is not as much time as you might think....  I'd like to shoot multiple weapons, so I'd like more time on the line and cut out some of the distances but I will see what you guys think.  If anyone arrives late, they will either miss out on the first stage, and have to start at the next one... which should be kicking off around 9:30.

Speaking of weapons, for you to shoot on this range you must have a weapon capable of doing this.  Everyone has something that will do 200 and 300.  But beyond that, you need adjustable elevation.  This means a service rifle with adjustable iron sights (out to 600yds) or a scoped rifle with 30-40 minutes of elevation adjustment (to 1000yds).  You should come knowing your estimated ballistics for your ammo, muzzle velocity, and elevation adjustments.  Your caliber/bullet should remain supersonic if you want to shoot at 800, 900, or 1000.... not everyone will likely be able to shoot at those ranges, unless you know your equipment is capable.  We dont want anyone shooting over, or skipping rounds off of, the berm.  If you arent sure about your equipment, lets talk!

Ammo - well, depends on how much shooting you plan to do, but in my bolt gun alone, I can easily see going through 150-200 rounds.  Not to mention any other rifles you plan on shooting.  Come prepared.  Running out sucks.

So..... who is in?  Who is interested?..... and let me know to confirm!

Might be interested...just don't know my schedule that far out.

I will be at the Fort Wolters match Sunday.

Edited  to add:

Wouldn't it be better to pick only 2 distances?  The only reason I ask is it eats a lot of time to swap the line/pit, move shooters/gear etc...

No, I can't.  Just zero the rifle at 100 yds last Sunday.  Didn't have a chance to dope other distances up to 1K.  Besides, I'm not good enough to shoot against you guys....yet.

If it's zeroed and mounted well, you can get close to the dope...It's informal anyway.  You should come.

Hey I know that ugly guy in the watch cap!  Come hell or highwater I am going to be at the Badlands Tactical sniper school in Oklahoma April 19-23.  If anything other than hell or highwater show up, I will join you guys again in Waco.  If any of you guys want to get together to rent that 1K range on any given day before then keep me in mind.  It would be nice to set something up once a month or so.

As long as you have adjustable elevation (A2/A3, Acog) you should easily be able to do 600.

If your AR has a 20" barrel and either A1 or A2 sights and a military style web sling, I can show you how to keep your rounds in the black out to 600 yards.

Tell us about your rifle's specs, and several of us here can give you some help.  Don't be afraid.  All of us had someone else teach us how to do it.

I should have my 6.8spc SPR  built up by then. Sounds like a fun day.

Lets see how that thing does at 1000.

Vel about 2500+

BC of .395 for the 115 grn Hornady

and no specs for a few of the others. Better hope for no wind.

From what I hear .308 is only good to about 800, with no wind.....

To my limited understanding, wind can be compensated for with any bullet.  Lighter, it pushes more, heavier, less.

.308 can easily stay supersonic to 1000 using 175gr SMK's (or higher) and a good muzzle velocity.  168SMK's can even do it, as long as the muzzle velocity is high enough.

I can confirm that .308 will stay supersonic at 1K. I was shooting 175SMK @ 1K last December, and they were still supersonic. Mind you, I had a bullet drop of almost 39MOA from 200yd zero.

For 168's you'll need velocity north of 2650fps...

The rule of thumb is as fast and heavy as you can to minimize wind effect.

With practice, 1K is no problem at all with .308 as long as you have good glass with enough elevation. Wind can always be compensated for.
My eyes are not what they used to be, but you can get there with a good set of irons as well.

J. is good about making the ranges open after class for additional shooting to work your dope.  I'll be at PR1, not sure if I can make this, I gotta check my vacation time but i'll try and let you know.  Bryan

PR1 info is also posted in the training forum for those who are interested.
