You don't seriously think I'd be doing anything daft, do you.
Actually, if you wanted to, you could build one yourself without being a RFD,LEGALLY, but I won't go into that here. I do work with a RFD, you know him..............he sold you your rifle, and I 'smith in my spare time. So, easy peasy and nice and kosher. But this 9 milly has been heartache. It's not for me, but another member on this board |
Yep, he is, or at least a servant of. |
But we have one more 9mm insert kit! |
Nooooooooooooooooooooo.............. Ah go on then, just one more. Who'll start the bidding? |
i'll give you my first born son, followed by his first born son etc etc etc,
Would still be cheaper and less of a wait than fat bob, How much would it cost to put somethin like that together? James, |
A semi auto would be a heavenly 'gallery rifle'....
...I can dream can't I? ANdy |
Actually a semi would be much easier to make because it's a totally different system, but because you have to work with std AR parts there's a lot of fitting required |
Look's very sexy
I somehow think that this is the first of many order's to be filled in the future. Tony |
Mark,
No problem with the plods over it being 9mm what with all the BS some keep spouting about 'leakage' of 9mm into the 'underworld'? ANdy |
Apparently not as there's already a few 9's out there. Mark |
And a couple of .45's! |
That looks real nice.
And I think the MP5 looks reals nice. As a gallery rifle why not the MP5? I love the look of the AR but I also like the lines of the MP5. MP5 in straight pull....I'd buy one....even without the wifes permission (brave taffy but please dont tell her) To me some rifles look better than others. I like the look of some but not others....does that make me wierd?.....Naaaa! I do prefer to shoot them though. Nice project though . Well done it looks Taffy |
many, many, moons ago I got to shoot a straight pull MP5 - and it wasn't that good the cocking lever of an MP5 is on the left and quite forward, meaning that you have to balance the gun by the pistol grip whilst 'straight pulling'. Life would be a different matter if some sort of handle was fitted to the right side of the bolt head carrier, but this would distract from the MP5 'look'. All this has already been experienced/sorted on the AR15 platform. Now a Rhineland R22 with iron sights - rimfire nirvana! |
No way in hell the HO will tolerate a 'straight pull' conversion on the MP5.... it's very easy to reconvert back to a full auto. ANdy |
The straightpull MP5's that were destined to be released to the UK market apparently caused quite a legal kafuffle between HK and the Swiss firm who were intending to manufacture them. (Not sure if HO got involved)
I know the guy who owns the only straightpull MP5 that was released and its just gorgeous.....I've only held it, not fired it, but its quite a conversation piece... |
You can't 'convert' one anyway. Once Section 5 , always section 5, no matter what.
You could make a copy from scratch though..... |
Mark
How much cash would I need to persuade you to build another? I have some straight people to offend Richard |
More than you can afford |
Hmmmmm, that would probably be fairly easy................ |
well if you can do a .45 fal... how about a 7.62 para fal??
Preferably at better value than the sabre jobbies... James |
He's still stuck with them, he tried to sell me a .22 para FAL for £750 last time I spoke with him. ANdy |
looked at the website.. looks like all you would have to do is not mess around with the bolt locking parts... and youd be laughing,
Hmmmm .45acp enfield... Delisle |
The guy I know with the sttaightpull MP5 also has an original slienced .45acp delisle carbine too...hmmmm Who was it on here who was asking HK for a UK legal civvie straightpull G36 (i think it was ) ? |
Suley? ANdy |
Cheers Andy. Did he make any progress ? ? ?
Suley - Got an update ? |
He got a reply from the Germans saying they were looking at it IIRC... Rifles called the R8, a proper manual converion of the SL8, aka the G36, aka the AR18, which was buggered up to produce the SA80. ANdy |
I have seen the beasty and touched the beasty, it looks rather gucchi... ...of course it would be FAR gucchier if it was a bang!bang!bang!bang!bang!bang! version... |
Not too bad at all. We managed to keep it on the target at 200yds most of the time without even sighting it in properly (it was just a function test after all) It's a shame it's such a bugger to make. |
Inbound on thread.....
Yup our teutonic cousins did indeed state that they liked the idea and were reevaluating the project. BUT ( there is always one isnt therehey BTW are any of you going to IWA this year |
It went better than expected. The main problem has been the cartridge length, or rather lack of it, but with some juicy bolt mods it feeds 100% but you do have to be as positive as Southern Gun's LA to get reliable ejection. But with that said it appears to be easier to use than the LA's swivelling pistol grip. Now..............the super secret gallery rifle project is nearing completion All the parts have been acquired and as soon as we get a bit of free time, will turn the assorted pile of parts and reamers into another thing of beauty and perfection. Stay tooned Mark |
So what changes did you have to make to the bolt? Any chance of seeing a picture of the bolt?
As I understand it, the SGC LA 9mms suffered a lot with extraction issues with the short cartridge jumping off the bolt face. The switch to .30 carbine resolved these problems, and mine runs really well. Any clues on the new gallery rifle project......go on spill the beans ! |

Golovko,
Yes, that's what we're all dying to see. It is using the standard .223 locking lugs? In the States I'm building a straight-pull pistol, and why not in 9mm? I can imagine feeding was a real pain, & I'd really rather not think about such things :) "Is that a 40 round magazine?" "Ummm, yeah - but it's really a single-shot..." :( Gig 'em, backbencher |
You're almost correct. SGC's LA9 did in fact suffer from feed and ejection (not extraction) problems. But the cartridges didn't "jump off the bolt-face". The problem lies with the ejector pin and it's habit of trapping the short 9mm round as it's fed from the right hand side of the magazine. To alleviate this, you have to get rid of the ejector pin and rely on the ejector that comes as part of the 9mm mag well insert. And for that you have to cut the bolt and carrier length ways along the line where the ejector would've been. SGC used an ingenious spring loaded ejector. I didn't find that necessary. The bot will also lose locking lugs, but as it's fairly low powered, that's not too important. The bolt face has to be opened up too, as 9mm is slightly larger in diameter than .223. I don't have the parts to hand so can't take pics. Will try another time. As for the Super Secret Gallery rifle project.........it's coming along nicely and the first one should debut in the next few days. Don't go far..................................... Mark |

Mark, et al:
Did y'all happen to try your lovely pet w/ a single-shot adapter in the magazine well before y'all sorted out feeding properly? I've a .223" bbl on the way, so a 9 is not in my immediate future, but still trying to figure out what it would take to make a single-shot straight pull 9mm. In addition to standard AR-15 bits, it seems one would need @ a minimum: 9mm bbl (duh!) standard .223 bbl extension w/ locking lugs (& maybe M4 cuts as well?) open up the bolt face a little, or are tolerances good enough for a single shot? wooden/plastic single shot magazine/mag well insert What else am I missing? (Besides the Lancaster University Engineering Department) Gig 'em, backbencher PS - hmmm, this would work w/ a .38" Super, wouldn't it :) |
Looks fab..... if the spacer was removed from the front of the insert kit...would it feed better ?
