Almost finished the charging handle so here's a few pics. I've yet to mount it and try it but the prototype worked fine so i see no problems.

Is it an Aluminium Alloy?  Are you gonna get it powdercoated black?  Mines off to get powdered next week!

Edit:  Anyone know if these type of charging handles are available commercially?

Your gonna have to forgive my ignorance, but isnt it a bit to short ? doesnt it have to be the same length as the original ?

I'm probably talkin shite but i'm interested ( looks very cool ) and you dont need to grind the side off to have it.

Good job Taffy

It is aluminium and solid compared to the original.
Length wise it is shorter but it will be bolted to the top of the bolt carrier. So it does not need to be as long as the original.
Once i've drilled and counterbored it, I will post some pics of it mounted.
Cheers

You seem to have things in order Taff, look forward to seeing it mounted on the bolt carrier......... picture of that would be useful!

Are you going to powdercoat or finish it in any way?

Nice idea, the only problem with that (for me) is you still have to move your head every time you cock it.
It also looks like the case deflector and forward assist are still in the way
Apart from that, get it anodised.

Well  It's gotta be black.
I was considering black anodising as a paint or powder finish would create flakes as the surface wears. (which it will) I've used powdered Rilsan in the past (for work)and that's a very hard plastic coat but too glossy.
If I sand blast it to give it a coarser surface finish it may make the anodising look better.
I just don't know yet how I'll do it...but It will be black.

Whadda you know about Parkerising Mark ?

i think parkerising is just for steels,

Anodising comes up quite dull if the article is bead blasted first,

or stripped and then re-aondised,

As James says, parkerising, or phosphating is just for ferrous metals.
Anodising is the way to go, you can do it at home with a car battery but I've never tried it.

Hiya Taffy,

It look's great, and I hope that you can decide between parkerising etc.

Hospital, hope that its nothing serious, watch out for that super bug sh!t. One of my mate's in the UK had an accident at work, he was in a right state, and then he caught the super bug just to complicate matter's, I hope that he, and yourself will be okay.

NB. I went to my gunsmith's on Saturday to buy some .222Rem ammo for my BRNO Fox, he asked me if I shoot 9mm para, so as I do, said 'Ja',. He then put a box with 621 ex German army surplus ammo on the table and asked me if I was intrested. Me being me, sure depending on the price. When he said €25:00,  I nearly fainted. But I didn't I paid the man, and thanked him for his kindness, now there's a gunsmith who know's how to keep his customers happy

I've had some of the charge handles I've had made powder coated black, as well as a Medesha free float tube that was a shocking red colour (Mark knows the one). The handles  look the dogs bollox and work very well, I will try and post some pictures later this week,  but if I dont manage, then  you will have to wait and see the review on them as well as the  6.5 Grendel when the gun mags print them. he

I get the feeling I might have to make a small batch of these. No idea as for cost but I could supply finished handle with new screws and have it anodised...

Maybe a batch of 20 and see how we go. I'll work out a cost once I've made a final few adjustments.

Here's a few more better pics

On this next one you can see where I have added a shim to get the height right. This will be integral on the final finished item.

Sliding the bolt assembly into the upper.

Here you can see how far the handle protrudes giving plenty to get a hold of.

Nice taffy!!
Well done,

How many are you going to make??

If its over 20 id suggest getting the profile waterjetted or lasercut, for ease,
Anodising, the ppl we use has a minimum charge of £50,

James,

When you say ease....how cheap is easy ?
I'm going to visit a few local engineering firms this week to see how they fare on prices. There's also a platers nearby I'll pop into too. We had some fancy CNC machines where I used to work but not seen the water jet / laser do it's thing.

I'd thought about 20 first off but it depends on cost and interest. Do you think many would want this alternative here in the UK or even in Europe (dunno about their AR configarations)

ermm it depends on how many you want,

I work in an engineering company;......

We get a lot of stuff Water jetted or lasercut, because its cheaper and faster than CNC,
then we finish it off with the cnc,

Let's say 25/50, what cost are we looking at for a batch of either. Do you want the drawings to get a quote?
