Seen this? Wondering what all cartridges are on the "approved list" or if it has any chance of passing

Per the story and the DNR website, .357 and larger, straight wall with expanding type bullet, ammo. I would guess that it would include everything that fits the above description.

Gives me a reason to get a lever gun in 45-70 maybe.

ETA: I searched for a comprehensive list of each round included but failed.

Would be great to see this one go through. Then would come the decision on which caliber to choose.

Might be time for a custom "Go screw yourself DNR 357 Super Ultra Mag" How about one that has enough case capacity to drive a 140gr Hornady FTX bullet 2500-2700fps? Some wildcatter should be able to do that...

I've been wanting to shoot deer with a scoped 44 mag lever gun for a long time as I hate slug hunting and the muzzy season is just too early and then too late for me. I would like to see this go through.

Nice cloudy language about "no long barrel conversions". Min is 4", why can't they arbitrarily set a stupid max length rather than leaving it murky?

Heres how its worded
Link Posted: 3/23/2017 1:37:06 PM EDT
[#13]

"In addition, the commission shall provide, by rule, for the
use of straight wall ammunition under this subsection that
meets  ballistics specifications similar to the requirements
for straight wall ammunition allowed for use in a pistol or
revolver for hunting deer as provided in subsection 5."

By the way I read this it seems that the list should be expanded to include more cartridges.

And, what constitutes a long barrel modification? .45-70 barrels for my Contender are available in lengths over 20" from the factory. If I don't have a stock is that a mod?

ETA-my $250 Marlin 1895 might get to put a hole in something other than paper this year!

How fast is a 140 from a .357 Maximum at safe pressure levels? Deer would be a great use for the round.

Maybe Leverevolution bullets? The pointed bullet might squeeze a touch more fps out of it too. Might not reach 2500, but Max would be a great deer round.

10MM in an AR pistol would already be good to go.  This would allow the same in a rifle. 16", stock, then if we get SBRs allowed get a tax stamp for next year!

For a short time last year(or maybe 2 years ago) Bud's LE trade in had AR carbines in .40 for something like $479. I almost bought one to ream the chamber to 10MM. Now I really wish I had. 10MM out of a rifle would be great.

To get it as a different season we'd probably have to deal with them replacing one of the existing seasons with a rifle season. I highly doubt they'd give a whole new season. Each season has enough of a following that a proposal to replace one would likely be met with such a fight they'd scrap the idea altogether.

Now, after a few seasons of straight wall rifles and no higher accident rate maybe they'll see the light and give us a full rifle hunt, one way or the other.

Can't speak to whether or not it has the votes to pass, but it did clear the second funnel (today). So it's eligible for a vote in the full Senate. It passed the House 96-0 and no one is registered against it, so I wouldn't bet against it.

You can get 2600+fps with the 140gr Hornady tipped bullets in a 20" barrel. After I wrote the original post this I did some research and found that the 357 Maximum is just about perfect in a 20" barrel and 2550-2700fps is routine at safe pressures.

It passed today: http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2017/04/03/straight-wall-cartridge-rifle-deer-hunting-iowa/99989680/

Even better!

ETA-in any case, looks like my .45-70 will get some exercise in December. And I had all but made up my mind to not bother with firearm deer hunting this year!-

Further ETA-just told my dad this passed, explained if allowed for handgun allowed for rifle. His response-"What about my Hornet?"

When he was a kid in Montana he shot a deer in the neck with a .22 hornet, dropped it where it stood, and to this day nothing will convince him that it's not a good deer gun. I told him buy a Rossi .357 for $200 or so.

New Rossi will run at least $450.  The only used one I've ever seen was an older LSI import that I snagged for $400 a couple of years ago.

A new Rossi lever, yes. But the single shots can be had for the $200 range, usually with a shotgun barrel as well.

I just realized that I already have a rifle that is compliant with this, but I don't really feel/know if it is powerful enough for a quick humane kill -- any opinion from more avid hunters?
It's a Beretta CX4, 16 inch barreled 40S&W.   I'd presumably be using highend COTS loads (like buffalo bore 155 gr. 1,300 fps)

I watched my wife's cousin shoot a deer with a .45 auto at about 20 yards. It died, fairly quickly. .40 has higher velocity, especially out of a rifle vs .45 out of a handgun. I wouldn't have a problem doing it. Just keep your shots reasonable and it'll die.

I was thinking .30 carbine was on the list for some reason, and I got all excited thinking I wouldn't need to buy a rifle.  Nope, no such luck.
