My dad is going from Texas to Indiana for a trip. We know there is reciprocity, but I am not finding a single useful scrap of info anywhere about what the actual regulations for carry are. The stickied link at the top gave me good info about how to get a license in Indiana, but I didn't see anything about actual rules for carry.

Can someone give a basic run down on where you can and can't carry, whether you must identify as a CHL to an officer in a traffic stop, etc?

Thanks!

As far as I know you don't have to notify LEO during traffic stops. I'm sure they'd appreciate it though. You can basically carry anywhere here except .gov buildings and schools. The law is silent on open carry but you might get a few funny looks if you open carry. Overall Indiana is very gun friendly. Hope your father enjoys his trip to the Hoosier state.

ETA: Check out the Indiana State Police Firearm FAQs for more info.

You can't carry at any of the following: school property or any property being used for a school function (including buses),  planes, "controlled" areas of the airport (though I don't really know what that means), riverboat casinos.  I imagine you can't carry in a government building either, but I'm not sure on that.

You do not have to tell an LEO that you have a license before they ask.

You can carry openly with an out of state license, but only if your license doesn't specifically say it is for "concealed carry."

The NRA website has a nice summary of some other details, like: it's illegal to shoot across a road.  I didn't know that until just now.

I think the controlled areas of the airport are the areas past security.  So, if you are going to pick someone up, you can carry, but not if you are actually getting on the plane.

So no prohibitions on carry where alcohol is served or sold, etc? Carry in a bar?

(Thanks for the info so far, btw!)

No issues with places that serve alcohol.  Restaurants, bars, etc, you are ok.

ETA  I don't think anyone mentioned the state fair.  You can't carry there for some reason.

I think you can carry on the fairgrounds, just not when the actual fair is going on.

Whats up with this anyway? State Law is silent on this ,but yet I see places that No CCW signs in Indiana and most times it seems it's public property IE-- Lake Salinda, Lake John Hay, and Washington Co. Hospital, all in Washington Co. You are GTG in all of the Co. offices except the Court Rooms and their office areas. The City of Salem owns the Lakes I mentioned

You can carry onto casino property but not onto the gaming floor.  Casino security provides a complimentary weapon lock-up service at the security office.  No hassles, no questions.

That's the way I understand it.  If you have to go through a security checkpoint, you can't carry.  Until then, it's fair game.  (Though wouldn't want to try and convince TSA of that rule.)

Believe me the Washington Co. Hospital thing is not enforced.  I was a supervisor there for a few years.  It must be for insurance purposes.  Any wasy the pic on the sign is of a 92f so just do not carry a Beretta

I bet at any time in that small hospital there is 5 guns and 20 in the parking lot
