Appleseed in Middlebury, VT September 26-27 2009:

This is another FULL-DISTANCE SHOOT !!!
(25 meter on Saturday, out to 400 yards on Sunday)
We recommend you bring a Rimfire rifle for Saturday with 500 rounds of ammo.
You’ll probably go through 200 rounds of Centerfire ammo on Sunday.
There will be time allotted for sighter groups at each distance.
You will record your drop/windage settings for your rifle/ammo combination. (Valuable info!)
If you’re not a previous Appleseeder, you must come for both days to shoot on Sunday.

Sight in for deer season.
The host range is a farm and the whole family hunts.
They’ll be confirming their zeros for some long shots they may take this Fall.
Join us and do the same.
Learn the heritage of the Rifleman.
Gain some confidence in your shooting.

Event is FREE* for:
- Women
- 20 years old and younger
- Military (Bring your ID)
- Elected Officials
(* = There is a $10 range fee for the weekend)

Please register early at http://www.appleseedinfo.org
This shoot may not even be posted yet on the parent site, but will be in the next 24 hours.
Hope to see you there.

Anyone else?
Seriously, how often do you get to shoot out to 400 yards?
Take a crack at it.
Maybe you are already a good shooter.
Confirm it.
Maybe you need a wake up call like most of us.
I thought I was a decent shot before I got involved in Appleseed.
Boy, was I wrong.
Instructors will be shooting at this event.
You can't keep us away from FULL-DISTANCE events !!!
Anyone else coming?

wesmerc,

Full Distance events are rare.
Hence, the push for increased turnout.
Saturday will likely be a line full of .22s at 25 meters.
That's where we pour the basics into the students.  (From a Fire Hose !!!)
And .22 makes the shooting almost free.
Sunday will be some valuable full distance data collection.  (And REALLY FUN SHOOTING)
Appleseeds are fun, Full Distance events are FUN SQUARED.

If you have not taken your Black Rifle, M1 Garand, M1A, FAL, G3, Hunting rifle, etc... out that far, please check us out.
We put the "Rifling" back in your rifle.
If pie plate at 100 yards is all you want, use a slug gun.
If you want man hits out to 500 yards, (WITH REGULARITY) we'll give you the tools.
Full Distance is an eye opener for students.

You will be trained to ignore that uncle who held 6 inches over that buck at 400 yards and dropped it.
You will know better, or that your uncle is a lousy/lucky shot.
Try to make this one.
The Instructor pool alone is worth the trip.
Our Regional Appleseed Master Instructor lives only minutes from the shoot.
He taught me A LOT.
Hope you can make it.

you talked me into it and i just registered.  One problem though...  should I bring my AR or AK?  my AR is 1/9 and I have alot of 45 gr on hand for plinking but I would have to buy 55 gr for the event because i dont want to waste a good data collection opportunity on shit ammo.  With the AK on the otherhand my plinking ammo is the same as my SHTF ammo and its almost half as expensive.  I have a sar-1 and a converted saiga.

wesmerc,

In the Grand Tradition of AR15.com, BRING BOTH !!!
Have you been to Welch's gun shop in Lebanon, NH?
They should have some affordable XM193.
Don't clean 'em out though.
I need to replenish some of mine.

Also, we will shoot sighter groups before each stage.
During that phase, you could fire a .22 cal and .30 cal group on the same target.
Whether you choose to shoot for score with both rifles or not doesn't really matter.
Characterizing your gear is the critical task and you wouldn't burn through too much ammo doing it.
That is EXACTLY what I did at our Jericho Full Distance event this summer.
I shot sighters with 2 rifles, shot for score with just one.
80 rounds sent downrange total.  (40 rounds for an AQT and no more than 40 rounds of sighters)
200 rounds of Centerfire is the conservative number we tell shooters to bring.
Unless you blow through a lot sighting them in, you'd really only need 40 rounds per rifle to know your zero is golden..  (and that's generous)
Glad you can come.

I'm gonna cross post this over in the New York section if it hasn't yet been, but I will reiterate what others have said:

YOU NEED TO COME TO THIS.

I was at the Jericho shoot a little while back (also FULL DISTANCE) and learned a shit-ton.  The instructors are awesome, and you WILL shoot better when you leave.  The fact that it's going to be another full distance is making me reconsider some important and long standing plans that I already have for that weekend.

By the end of the weekend, if you didn't already you will realize that it is your RESPONSIBILITY to come to an Appleseed, do yourselves a favor and make it this one.

Riper, you guys do a great job....and we appreciate it.

-Marty

(consistent 200pt shooter....not a rifleman yet)

Marty,

Thanks for the plug.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Consistent 200s?
We'll push you over the edge.
(IF you've been doing your homework!)
Nah, you should have little trouble getting a few more hits in the black.
Hope you can make it.

what is the camping like at this event?  do people ever camp or do most people just "hotel" it

I'm doing the one in Calverton, NY in October but I would really like to do another one at full distance..

hah.. thats my deal..

how many people are they expecting? I don't see anything posted on the appleseed preregistration board.

WM & Pete,

You will have some company camping with you.
There are at least a dozen folks showing up at the gate.
Most of those are family members of the host range, females, kids, or military.
That's why they may not be bothering to pre-register.
On events that are likely to fill up quickly, that would not be wise.
Expecting around 2 dozen shooters.
See you there.

I'm 6 hours away... I'd have to be on the road by 3am to make it by 9..  I might leave at 4:30 and be an hour and a half late but that kinda takes some of the fun out of it..

BL,

Come and join us!
25 Meters (82 feet) is the initial sight-in distance.
Useful for your .22 and your centerfire's Battle Zero.
The goal is to generate a Drop/Wind chart for your gear.
25 Meters will usually get your centerfire on paper, but I prefer zeroing at actual distance on a Known Distance range.
You'll do both before the weekend is over.
A 25M zero for your .22 is a great idea.  (The only distance we usually shoot .22s at)
A 100 yard zero for your centerfire is too.  (First stage of the AQT is shot at 100)
See you there.

Remember: 500 rounds for Saturday (rimfire okay) & 200 rounds of centerfire for Sunday.

How far away exactly is Middlebury from say, White River Junction??  I'd love to make this but on such short notice my planning skills suck.. How early does it start and end each day?  I get home from work friday night at 3am so if it's too early I don't think I'll learn anything being exhausted.. Cant take the day off either unfortunately..

I've really wanted to attend a couple of these Appleseed events... I have a Ruger 10/22 with peep sights already zero'd for 25 yards and a Rock River NM A4 that is basically new in the box and I want to learn real world techiques and such.. All I know now is self taught from my 10yrs of experience with firearms and i know I have A LOT to learn.

JUS228,

I'm 45 minutes from WRJ and 50 minutes from the range.
If you go over Bethel Mountain, you can make it in 1:35.
We're trying to start at 8AM, but can you make it by 10AM?
We'll be flexible with you since you asked about it BEFORE the shoot started.
Leave your rifle in your rig until AFTER you've received the "Safety Briefing" if you come a little late.
I know we have room for you.
Join us!

WM,

It is not toooo hard to find.
Go over Bethel Mountain.
(Might be called Rochester Mountain)
Find a VT road map and try to follow what is listed below.
This should get you there.

From Rt 12 between Bethel and Randolph, VT:

- Take Camp Brook Road over to Rochester (15-20 minutes)
- Head North on Route 100 to Hancock and take Route 125 West toward Ripton (5-10 minutes)
- Drive through one of Middlebury University's campuses and Ripton
until you reach the 4-Way Stop at Route 116 (25-30 minutes)
This is up and over another mountain.
SOME PARTS ARE VERY TWISTY!
- Take a Right and head North on Route 116 (5-10 minutes)
- Look for an Olive Drab House on your Left and start slowing down
- Take the next Left.  ("Quarry Road")
The turn is across from a white church/community-type building.
- After maybe half a mile, take a Right.
It's a little bit of a jack-knife onto a dirt road.
- Stay on this.  ("Munger Street")
You'll come to a 3-Way Stop.
Go Straight Through for ~1 Mile.
You'll see the "Windy Knolls Farm" on your Left.
(The drive from the Olive Drab House to the Farm takes less than 5 minutes)

See you there.

Okay Already TimJ !!!

AAR Middlebury, VT September 26-27 2009

Full distance event.
8 Shooters both days.
4 No-Shows.
No new Riflemen.
SEVERAL Dangerous Cooks!
2 shooters drove 6 hours from Long Island to make this event.
Another shooter drove 4 hours from Maine.
Props to them.
Nice to finally meet some online personalities.

Saturday:  25M standard fare

Redcoat background history, 1st Strike…
4 QDAQTs
Mostly .22s on the line, 1 Boomer.
The Boomer helped other shooters find their Bubble.
Noticeable improvement on the final Redcoat.

Sunday:  25M / Full Distance

25M Redcoat, Sighters on 1” Squares, B&D w/ Centerfires, 2 QDAQTs
3-4 shooters shot tighter groups with their Battle Rifles than with their .22s!
Managed (2) Full-Distance AQTs on Sunday.  (Even with the rain)
No target pits, plenty of fresh cow pies.
Used a 2-man team on a 4-Wheeler to record/verify the FD hit locations on a clipboard for each shooter after each stage.
Had to use a laptop case to keep the clipboards dry when not in use.
They pasted the holes afterward.
This worked out well.
Gave us plenty of time for History on Sunday.
2nd / 3rd Strike, DOM…
Each shooter went home with their hit record and come-ups for their rifle/ammo combination.
I was very pleased with the shooters’ attitudes, receptiveness, and abilities.
Definitely a GREAT site for 4/19.
A BIG Thank You to our host range.
Another Thank You to Nickle, Blueskys, NattyBumpo, Rifleman_NH, and D.
