Thanks for all the assistance everyone.  I've decided to look for cruisers (around 250cc) and scooters (secondary).  Price I'm looking for is still around $1500.  Thanks again for all the help thus far.

Hey all, I've been debating as to whether or not I should get another dual sport bike.  I've been telling myself for a while
that if gas gets to $5 a gallon I'd get another motorcycle.  Well, that looks like it's about to be a reality.  I've been
keeping an eye on craigslist for a used bike (really can't afford a new one unless I get a Chinese clone (don't wanna do
that because I'll probably need someone locally to work on it)).  So, since I found my first two bikes (years ago) by word
of mouth, I thought I'd put out the feelers.  So, if you're reading this and care to help, can you keep an eye out for used
dual sport bikes at a decent price?  I'd like to keep it around $1500 if possible.  If you have a buddy/family member/etc.
looking to get rid of one, let me know.  250-450cc would be optimal, but that's flexible if the price is right.  Also, if someone knows a place locally (I'm in Seattle) that deals in a lot of used bikes at fair prices, let me know.  Any information is greatly appreciated.  Thanks a bunch.

For $1500 I take it you are looking for something old school? Like this?:

Yeah, I'm not afraid of old school.   Late 80s early 90s would be better.  But, as long as it is mechanically sound, has a decent base of after market parts, and gets good mileage, I'm up for just about anything.  Thanks for the link.

@ $5 a gallon, riding (a motorcycle in traffic) will be much safer.

I'm not quite sure how to take that.  But if it's how I think you mean it, you're right.  I'm actually pretty scared of motorcycles.  I feel like it makes me safer.  My father spent 9 and a half months staring at the ceiling in a full body cast because of a motorcycle wreck.  But, I don't ever plan on taking it on the freeway, hell I don't plan on driving over 40 mph.  It would just be for putting around, to and from school, to the store, and around the neighborhood.

He probably meant there would be less folks on the road.

Here are some more Oregon links:

portland.craigslist.org/clc/mcy/697129842.html XR 600 R (says has plates but I'd make sure you could transfer the title to WA as street legal)

portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcy/695855901.html XT 225 (twice what you said you want to spend but that is damn low miles)

Yeah, that yamaha is what I'm looking for.  I don't know if I can bear 3k right now though.   I think I will continue looking for a 250cc.  That seems like me speed.  Thanks for the links.

Did you check the Seattle craigslist?

For putting around buy a scooter, Honda reflex etc. Friend of mine had one when he lived in Ballard and worked downtown. I stored it for a month or so and rode it around the neighborhood a couple times, wasn't too bad and I didn't turn metrosexual or anything

Yeah, I've been thinking about that too.  Problem is, I'm a pretty big guy: 6'4" 275lbs.  I'm not sure a basic scooter could hold up.  Besides that, I'd look like a gorilla fucking a peanut.  It is still an option though.

My buddy was shorter but about the same size Is fuel milage and ease of parking your concern or appearance?

I never should have got rid of my DR-350 but honestly it wasn't very comfortable to ride.

I do have a '73 CB-350.  While it isn't a dual sport, it'll go on any fireroads I need to go on.

Really I feel I'm in a better position for repairs and maintanence than a '90s bike.

But thats just me.

Sounds good to me.  It's been a while, but I wouldn't mind a trip around the block.

You might think about a small road bike.
This looks pretty good.

You might also look for a Honda Rebel.
It's not a dual sport, but it's a great beginner/commuter bike.

Prices have jumped big time on bikes in the last few weeks.

It's been years since I priced them.  They're definitely more than I remember. But then, what isn't.

If the wife say ok, you can ride the one with the pink furry thingy on it.

Then try mine with the BFL.  And the 45 rear end.

There's a DS650 on Seattle CL for $1200, helluva deal, great bike. Yup to what Mike said. Bikes are going way up. Scooters aren't as bad as ya think. I'm about 235 and I ran around the 'hood here on a Faggio for a couple summers. Probably looked like the Supreme Tard, but little kids didn't throw rocks at me or anything. 35mph was as good as it got, but, so's 90mpg!
