I grew up in Friday Harbor during the time you are referring to, it died in the early 80's. My first introduction to J shaped curve populations.
All the rabbits bred, well like bunnies, and over populated themselves into oblivion. The rabbit population is growing again, but nothing like it was in the 70's.
There used to be "rabbit cars." A local would take a beater car, take the doors off, weld a seat to the front bumper, everybody would liquor up, then somebody would strap themselves into the seat, the driver would chase a bunny, the guy in the seat would try to use a net and scoop the bunny up. If the guy in the seat could grab them by the ears the local honeys would fuck them stupid because they were a real stud. This was before VHS porn and the Internet.
EMTs and the fire department routinely pulled and patched up locals who had driven into blackberry bushes. Rabbits were killed at will. Last time I saw someone shoot a rabbit was 1986 and Jason Black shot one during lunch out near Bailer Hill road. This was back when guns on school property (in this case, the school parking lot) was nothing to call 911 about.
Now let us talk about real estate. The most expensive real estate is in the San Juan Islands and has been for the last ten years. You can thank the cocksuckers from down south, and I'm not talking Tijuana.
Currently if you shoot a rifle, there is a good chance you will blow out somebodies $4,000 picture window in their 2.5 million dollar house. They probably won't care since they only spend a weekend there ever two years. Fucking douche-bag nozzle's. So the chance at getting permission to kill something is slim to none unless you know someone or like poaching. That is why the deer population is out of control. Once again thank the cocksuckers from down south. And I'm not talking about Olympia.
In all truthfulness I never knew there was a "deer season" until I was 11. We used to shoot the deer in the garden when they started becoming a pain. To this day I still remember the incredulous feeling I had when I found out that you "had" to "pay" for a "license" to "shoot" deer and you were "limited" to how many you could shoot in a "season."
As for farmers, there are no longer the farmers we are used to contacting for hunting deer, ducks, rabbits, and cows (only when no-one is looking) on the island. The farmers were bought out by people who like to grow things. The things they like to grow is grapes for wine, lavender, and echinachia. Wine is something liberals drink, lavender is something used to make you smell funny after or during bathing, and echinacia is something you take when you don't feel well.
People who drink wine, smell good, and worry about their health are liberals, and you ain't hunting on their land any time soon.
Dope is no longer the side cash crop there, lavender and other garden herbs are. It is still easier to bring dope in from BC then grow it. Also "organic" lavender costs more per once then dope. Even hippies like money. Which means they are capitalists, which means they are conservative, which means they are Republicans and hypocrites. And that is why I hate hippies. Everyone I grew up with who wore a tie-dyed Grateful Dead T-shirt and went to Woodstock was a money grubbing capitalist whore.
