I have 100 linked rounds of .50AP loaded by Maine Cartridge Co. in c.2003. I am aware there are issues with this ammo so I will not fire it at all in my gun. However, I have met another shooter who is also fully aware of the MCC issues but is interested in my ammo for the pull down/relaoding value.

I am interested in opinions on a fair price for for what I got considering the current market and the known issues with MMC.

Frankly, I would be glad to have a safe way of disposing of this ammo and not lose any $$$ in the process.

Primed, once fired machinegun brass, figure $1.00 each (based upon $0.70 brass, $0.30 primer).
M2AP bullets, figure $0.30 each.
Links, figure a $0.08 each.

I discounted the bullets about a dime each to cover the pulldown process. And i'd give the powder NO value as you don't know what it is, how old, etc, especially given the Maine Cartridge Co's reputation.

So I'd say $138 for the whole lot would be about right.

What are these "MCC issues" you speak of? I just picked up some linked 50 that was regular rounds with black tip every few rounds.

MCC = Maine Cartridge Company. Some of their ammo has been loaded really hot. That's all I've heard, although 50_Shooter or 50_Cal may know a little more.

I had a round blow out through the primer. It melted the firing pin. The force mangled the extractor spring...which caused the bolt to jam. It took some pounding to get it loose. I believe I remember destroying the ejector in the process.

That was the first round out of a can of AP. I sent the rest back. I can't remember who I purchased it from...but I DO remember they paid for my gun to get repaired! I wish I could remember. Dammit. I thought that was pretty damn cool of em.

I tried their ammo once about 10 years ago. I got 100 rounds of Amax loaded that was nice stuff. I also got 100 rounds of Ball ammo that was DANGEROUS stuff. I was shooting it through a chrony and in a 5 shot string I had a deviation of 643 fps. The stuff ranged from just over 2600 fps up to over 3200 fps. The last shot locked up my bolt and could not even beat it open with a rubber mallet, had to send it back to Klause to fix it. I tore down the rest of it and the powder charges were any where from about 3/4 of the case full, and some were filled up to the projectile, I don't think you could get any more powder in them with out compressing it.

Just curious on this if it ever comes up in the future, would there be any problems with this ammo in an M2?

It seems like a heavy duty machine gun action would take the beating from hot loads a lot better than a regular .50

That's true if the government furnished your gun. I'm sure the guys out there with registered M2HBs are pretty careful on what they feed them. Same with the semi-auto M2 shooters. Lots of money in those guns...too much to risk on known crappy ammo.

But your point is correct...an M2 is generally beefier and made for more variations in ammo than a shoulder fired rifle.

Can't add much more then the others have already, the stuff is junk.

If both of you are happy with the deal then do it but please don't shoot it. Break it down and reload it and be sure to check all of the components before reloading the stuff.
