Anyone ever think you are a fellon for having a weapon with evil features?  I find it disconcerting that one of the range officers at the range I went to last weekend, which I have been going to for about five yers, don't understand the CT State AW Ban, and the Crime Bill.

During a cease fire one of the range officers was going down the line examining weapons to make sure they were unloaded with the actions opened.  The guy stops at my table, looks over my pre-ban Bushy M4gery and decides its an illegal post ban AW.  Mind you the jackass never looked at the left side of the receiver to see who made it (AR15's are illegal in CT), or what the serial number was.
No, instead he comes over to me and asks in an accusatory tone, "what state are you from?".  Immediately, I know what he is getting at since many people in CT think ALL prebans are illegal, not realizing that only the AR15 is on the state ban, and that the AR15 is only manufacture by Colt.  So, I explain that the gun is a Bushmaster, and not subject to the state ban.
Then he announces, like he's established some kind of incriminating point,  "Yeah well,  you've got a birdcage and a bayonet lug on that thing."  At that I told him simply "its a preban", in as much of a smart ass tone as I could.
What really gets me, besides the ignorance, is that fact that the state is trying to close the range, and here is this numbnuts employee wondering around acting like an asshole.  Yeah, there's a great way to muster support for keeping your range open. How did this guy fail to even think of giving me the benefit of the doubt?

Sad thing is that if it closes, you lose.  If it stays open with ROs like that, you lose.

That is the reason for the anti-gunners, environazis, safety nuts, and developers trying to shut down ranges.

There will not be a replacement if it closes.  Eventually, they will all be forced to close, and we will have nowhere to shoot.

Have you considered becoming a RO there?

I've had to deal with an asshole like that but in Texas. Most people at the range have worthless dear rifles. I got an attitude from them when I brought my AK 47 and AR 15 there.
So I came back there 3 weekends in a row to piss them off more. Then told them I would be back again with a Tec 9 to enjoy some rapid fire at the pistol range.

The range I go to in CA doesn't give two shits about your features. As long as it's not auto or short barreled.

I have seen several post bans with offending features, but have never metioned it to anyone, cus I don't care either.

I take a slightly different approach and Offer most anyone, specially the Ill informed an opportunity to fire my EVIL weapons. Makes it easyer to spread the addiction.

After all the Range Nazi's are gun owners too, and we don't need them opposing our ownership of sport utility weapons. We'd be better off converting them than pissing them off.  IMHO

Ha Ha!  I was at the range with my AR15.com LEGP rifle and some guy saw the 2001 date on the receiver, the fixed teloscopic stock, and the fake press-on flash supressor.  Mistaking the look-alike features for the real ones, he became very worried and informed me that my rifle was illegal.  I showed him they were fake features, but he still seemed worried that just the pre-ban look would be enough to get me into trouble.

At least he wasn't an ass hole. He was simply genuinely concered that I might get "caught".

Our General Assembly prides itself on using CA as a model for gun legislation.  In 1993, they passed a law to ban the transfer of a list of firearms.  The Colt AR-15 and Sporter were on this list, but not Bushmaster, Armalite, Oly, etc.  Anyone owning one of these had to register by a certain date or turn over to an FFL or out-of-state.  If moving into the state now, you must dispose or demil.
Last year they tried to update the law using the "evil feature" verbage, like the federal ban, except banning transfers after 10/1/01.  Thankfully the bill was compromised to death.  We only get hurt if the 1994 fed ban sunsets.
Here's our complete list:
Any select fire weapon (full auto only ok)

Come to the Land of the Great White Whale, otherwise known as the Commonwealth of Taxachusetts, home of the bibulous/obnoxious Teddy Kennedy (and his liver, too, I suppose... )- , where despite our insane numb-nutz gun laws, I have never had a problem with shooting ARs or any other kind of gun*, even when shooting it faster than the usual glacial pace of the other shooters, usually hunters "just adjustin' them sights" on their .30-30s and slug guns. Most of the time, I hear from other shooters at ranges I visit and am a member at, "oh, wow, cool, an AR- way to go!", or "can I try it?"

* the only firearm I have ever pissed people off with when firing it is a Brown Bess repro flintlock musket I fired in an enclosed shooting gallery at my local range (Targets are outside.) I asked if anybody would mind if I fired a flintlock. No prob, everybody said. Until... I fired it and, even though the muzzle was outside the building (42" barrel...), the smoke from the flashing pan filled up the gallery..."HEY! who put out the lights??"

I think it's ridiculas that anyone who enjoys the shooting sports would question someone about a violation of any weapons ban. The AW bans are assinine we all know it and I choose to ignore the features on other shooters weapons. I couldn't possibly care less if someone may be in violation. It's rude to even inquire about the status of a weapon at the range.

Yup, I plan on it this summer if it's still open.  It's the closest range to me and their only rules besides gun safety are no machineguns, and no firing of shot at target frames.

sgtar15 and I belong to the same range/club. The only problem the rangemaster has with AW owners is the jerks who go through 400-500 rounds and never police their brass even though there are cans on the firingline for spent brass. Other than that he thinks we are a cool group. Has even offered to let us (AR15.comers) use one of the LE ranges for a private shoot.

SGB is right. Stick a AR or a M16 in their hands and watch their eyes light up.
I live 15 min. away from the shooten hole (range) and when the local deer hunters shows up we let them try ours.
Works every time.
p.s. if that doesn't work we crack out the 320 lb. beer can cannon.

The law in CT is pretty freekin' confusing.

Could I still buy a preban in CT?

If you read the list of forbidden weapons it would seem all AK clones are banned but I have seen SAR-1 rifles for sale.

Has anyone ever seen a Bushmaster Auto Rifle?

Anybody who's not into sport utility rifles just isn't likely be well informed on this crap.

BTW What range are you talking about?

Rangie, ALL prebans EXCEPT preban Colt's (ie. any gun with "AR15" stamped in the receiver) are legal in CT.  Any AK is legal in CT EXCEPT any AK marked "AK47".

I am happy to answer your questions the best I can, but it would also be a good idea to call Detective Joe Kubish at the CT State Police Firearms Unit located in Middletown.  I don't have the number, but you can 411 it.

The range I was talking about was Wooster Mountain in Danbury.  It's usually a fun place to shoot with a lot of friendly people.

There is open pistol & rifle shooting this Sunday from 12:00PM-3:00PM.  You can give them a call Sunday at 203 794 9821.  They are located on Route 7 a couple miles before Danbury airport if you are going North from the Stamford area.

Edited to mention the best part; it only cost $10 to shoot for the whole day.

fellers I had no idea how fortunate I am.   Best friend owns a range about 4 miles from my house or I can go just about anywhere in the county and shoot.   Rural Ga. has it's setbacks, but this is not one of them.

I imagine the people that wrote this law in Ct. thought they were gun smart when they typed "Colt AR15" and didn't even take the time to check if someone else made and ar15.  Again their bad made your good because they were obviously trying to target SPECIFIC guns and were so tuned in to the forrest they missed the trees.

When will they understand that people go crazy not guns.    Brother-in-law went to one of the most awful murder scenes where a person was repeatedly stabbed (crime of terrible rage) with a ...............................

I notice that CT banned the Mini14 with folding stock.  If someone accidently snapped the stock and reattached it with duct tape, would that make the gun illegal?

Millions of gun owners don't understand their rights is being taken away, becasue they don't shhot the same type of weapons most of us do on this site.  Since it dose not effect them, they usually don't care. Unless we ban together to fight off the tide, we are will be the last generation in America to own guns legally.

I realize the Sporter and Sproter II are banned as well.  It was my understanding that they also have "AR15" stamped on them, but having lived in CT I haven't seen too many of them.  As far as being grandfathered goes, you don't simply get to keep and shoot your pre ban Colt's.  Like you said they had to be registered during an amnesty period back in 1993 following the ban.  Those are pretty crappy conditions if you ask me.

Does anyone ever ask to see your registration card (or what ever they gave you when they violated your right to privacy)when you go shooting?

Also, where do you usually shoot?

I had a range owner scream at me for bringing in a pistol once, of a type that he himself had an accident with not long before. Showed me his colostomy bag at the front counter and everything.

My sin apparently was bringing the gun in the plastic box I bought it in, instead of a lead-lined, locked and sealed iron box, with mystic sigils and wards to keep the evil from getting out.

I had gone to one of our local outdoor ranges in Tampa with my Marlin 60 .22LR.  I loaded the tube with 18 rounds and started shooting at the target.  The RO gets on the loudspeaker and tells me that I have to count to 2 between each shot, as rapid-fire was not allowed.  Yet on the pistol side, you can hear those with semi-autos just emptying their clips as fast as they can.

OT... the range, which had been there for many years, had to close because developers put up houses in front of the range (dumb-asses!).  Homeowners were complaining about bullets breaking windows or hitting the house and blaming the range.  After the range was closed, it turned out that the bullets were coming from people just shooting in the woods between the range and the homes.  But now that the range is closed,a new one has NOT been built.

The Tampa Police Range?

You gotta love developers.  They will show houses and property when the range is closed, and never mention it. Then, when the homeowners complain, they encourage them to sue for closure.  When the range closes, they can buy the downrange property in the old safety fan cheap, and build more houses to sell.

What a scam!

Sad to say, but I don't even bother with the silly ranges anymore.  Their rules are too strict and it is hard to have any real fun.  If I want to shoot, I have several of friends with land close by, or I can drive 45minutes to my 105 acres...  I can set up cans, little green Army men, targets, whatever and just blast away.  If I want to do rapid fire, fine.  If I want to practice "the bump", so be it.

I think that safety is great at a range because you never know who is shooting beside you, but as far as to accuse you of being illeal -- ____ him!

I cant stand Range Natzi's !!! There's a state range near my home that we're only allowed to load 3rounds in our mags. But I have about 25 mags for my ar15, so I load each one with 3 rounds an fire away. With the quick mag changes in my ar, it sounds to range officers like I'm shooting off 30 round mags. This one time one guy comes over and taps me on the shoulder and yells that I cant do that. I replied "give me a ticket and we'll decide this in court". I also noticed he had removed his earplugs. My 14" barrel is very load. So I simply resumed what I was doing before he came & turned around and shot a really quick 3 round burst. He was PISSED, but walked away like the idiot bully he is.
