I am probably going to get flamed for this, but my Hi-Point 9mm carbine is one fine piece for $160. The HGs are pretty decent too for the price of around $100. They all have lifetime warranties from the mfg. which is located right here in Ohio (Mansfield).

Mosin Nagants. Run of the mill copies are as low as $40, all matching uncommon models (like the 38 Carbine) are $125, sniper rifles are around $600. Antiques (pre-1899) are easy to find and only $200-250. You can get synthetic sporter stocks and scope mounts for $40 each.

You can find a "Sterling" made AR-180, about 90%, for $800 - $850.00 Most evil features per dollar : Flash-suppressor, bayonet lug, pistol grip, high cap mags and that great side-folding stock. The AR-180 has a 1:12 twist barrel and will properly stabalize a 52 grn - 55 grn bullet. Definitely not a 62 grn. With the correct ammo this mostly un-noticed little puppy will shoot lights-out. (Just ask the IRA !) |

I got the Type 1 receiver, as it had more meat to it. Under the theory that more is ALWAYS better.  Other than the lightening cuts, what's the difference in the Type 1 and Type 2 receiver???? |

I may have this bassackwards - but I was told years ago the Type 2 was the machine gun receiver. I probably need to re-check my facts. |

According to the Fnfal board there is no difference between type 1,2, or 3. It's all in the look.

I'd vote for the ASA AR-15 with the new side chargehandle. I just built one up on a postban Colt flatop reciever in M4 configuration. Total cost of weapon with a Trijicon II tri-angle rectile amber dot sight was right at $1300.00.
This was the cost breakdown before sales tax: $745.00 for the complete upper (which included a modified bolt carrier) $310.00 for the reciever (gunshow purchace)$115.00 for the parts kit, and $95.00 for the complete buttstock assy. and handguards, and $30.00 for the sight mount and sling. Alot of dough for an AR...but this is now an everyday weapon! Shot 5 MOA at 100yds. without even adjusting the Trijicon II! |

How about AK's? Romaninan AK's(7.62 and 5.45) rifles go for $300-$350 at gun shows in Portland, OR. The ammo is cheap, $75-100 for 7.62x39 or $110 for 5.45x39. The magazines are cheap and readily avaiable. Since AK's have so few parts, they last forever.

How bout the AR-15 LEGP series of firearms??!!
I love my 2001 LEGP M4gery by RRA. Value already went up. The 1911s weren't bad as well as the Mossberg Shotgun. I bet the 2002 LEGP will also be a winner. Let's also not forget the CETME for 395.00 shipped. |

garandman, why are you doing mentioning an $800 rifle as "budget conscious?" ;)
Turk Mausers. I paid less than $40 for mine. In my opinion, it's a nicer rifle than the Mosin Nagants. The last ammo I bought was $4 per 70 rounds. That's less than 6 cents per round. Single-stack AK's. I've seen both a WASR and a MISR (Egyptian made) for less than $175. A friend bought the MISR, and it is 100% reliable. When you save-up enough money, you can always convert them to a double-stack with a file and a few US parts. SKS. I'm still seeing SKS's around for $150 or less. While I think the AK mentioned above for $175 is a better deal, an SKS is still a good choise for something cheap to buy and cheap to feed. Also, stripper clips are much cheaper and lighter than magazines.z |

I concur with the CMP Mossberg M44. Those things are tack drivers. Be advised that the trigger guards may need to be replaced but a buddy of mine who posts on Jouster.com makes them and sells them for a reasonable price. You'll need a front sight but they are readily available. It comes with a rear sight, either a Mossberg or a Palma.
I'm sitting on my paperwork and I'll probably mail it in after the end of the month. Once you go on CMP's list you can buy other stuff too, like M1 Garands and bulk ammo. It's the best deal going IMHO. |

I am glad you have something to remember your father by. When I was 12 my father first taught me how to shoot with a Swiss Shmidt Rubin rifle in .308 caliber. After all the training I still held the damn thing about 1/2" from my shoulder and it knocked me on my ass!! About a month ago I aquired that rifle from my father and it will always be my favorite and in my family. That is what memories are made of. Sgtar15 |

My take on it is gun prices have been about as reasonable as I ever seen them in the last twenty years. Made several of what I consider good buys at shows and from friends.
Examples Oly AR assembled from kit, $600. Shoots better than I do. Century M-1 Garand. Yeah its a Century, but mine works just as well as the CMP guns and I only have $300 in it. Mint Inland M-1 Carbine, no import stamps, Korean War rebuild via Mount Rainer Ordnance Depot, $400. Auto Ordnance 1911, parkerized, $310 Ruger P 90 with adjustable sights $300. There's buys out there. Just got to fish around a bit. |

In my opinion;
Makarov pistol-109.00 right now for NIB. Ruger 10/22-out shoots almost everthing out there right out of the box. Enfield #1MkIII 2A in .308-one heck of a bargain, and surprisingly accurate. CZ-52 in 7.62X25-for only 125.00, you get a big bang for your buck! |

G. Man, finally reached the guy about Type 1 and Type 2 receivers. The Type 2 receivers are the newer and may be used with a squad-automatic-weapon (SAW) and a heavy barrel. As a practical matter he says Type 1 or Type 2 -does not matter. Then he says they're out of Type 2's for two months ! Go figure. |

Build your own FAL Imbel or G1 for under $400 Great reliable gun and acurate or just buy a Savage 10 fp for $400 You cant go wrong with either one, both will reach out further than an AR or AK and more acurate

Lee Enfield Rifle. They are very cheap and very good.
Ruger Revolvers: These Revolvers will out last you and your grand kids. M1 Garand and FAL: Both are very good deals. Especially the CMP Garand. For Lever Action Rifles: Marlin. |
