how would i go about mounting a harris bipod on my m1a rifle?  any help is appreciated

You would need a sling stud.  This would have to be screwed into the stock.

For $100.00 you can get a USGI one that attaches to the gas tube.

If you go with the Harris be careful not to let the screw go into the gas tube or op-rod.

Versa Pod makes an adapter that fits the M1A in stock form. I think it uses the gas piston nut as a mount point.
Why do you want to make a heavy rifle, heavier?

Do not mount anything on the barrel or any part of the gas system.It will muck up accuracy
Mount a Harris or Versapod to the front drainhole on the stock in front of the swivel.
You can mount a stud or adapter there and it looks like a factory job.
