All the MILES gear mounts and units I have seen and used mount on the barrel.  The are activated with a blank and require the blast to set it off.  I have not seen one mounted on the HG...but who knows?

Ok, as per the ex-army guys here in my office, those are mounts for a small mirror system that allows the instructor to stand behind the soldier and see what sight picture they have.  This is used frequently on new shooters and in training.  I will see if I can get an official Mil-Spec part # and post info here.

The item in question is the mounting bracket for the AN/PAQ-4. It's a infrared laser for use with NVGs that allows for night time engagements. The laser sight is detachable when not in use. It's standard issue in all Marine Corps infantry units.

I would think they would want to mount any aiming device on the barrel since the handguards are loose. Is there more apparatus under the handguards?

The mount attaches to the handguard as well as the barrel underneath. It's a very secure mount.
